The Last Week in Lent.
The solemn Lenten season is drawing to
a close. To-morrow is the last Snnday
in Lent .and is known in the Calendar as
l'alm Sunday, representative of. the day
on which the Saviour entered Jerusalem,
seated on an ass, 'while the multitude cut
oft' branches of the palm tree and scat
tered them in His way, cryjng "Hosanna:
Blessed is the Iviug ofIsrael that cometh
in the name of ; the Lord." It ; was on
that day that Christ wept over Jerusalem
and prophesied its destruction, and on
which he went iuto the Temple and cast
out all that bought and sold there and
overthrew the tables of the money changers.
The week which succeeds Palm Sun
day, or rather that with which it begins,
iis invariably entitled Passion Week, Great
'Week and Holy Week. It is the saddest
and most solemu pcijiod of the entire year
in the Churchandi is devoted to fasting
and prayer I aud religious meditation.
Good Friday, now but five days distant, is
typical of the Crucifixion of Christ ; the
next 'day, Saturday, is Easter Eye, and
this day is held in commemoration of
the state in which our Saviour was be
tween the day of his death and that on
which he rose from the dead. Easter Day is
that on which his resurrection vifas ac
complish a! Then it is that-the Church
lays aside the habilaments of Woe and
mourning, and comes forth clothed in gar
ments of joy, with the glad halleluias
and the happy rejoicings on the risscn
Christ.

The Kaleigh Observer says;. The Knights
jofHonor is a new order recently intro
duced in this State. It is of English
originand has existed for a large number
of years in the Mother country. The
American Knights of Houor is an im
provement on the English order, as many
of the original defects .were cured upon 'its
organization in this country .1 It is a
charitable, benevolent-institution, and em
bodies with it a plan of insurance that is
said to be highly satisfactory. There are
now eleven Lodges' in the State, and a
Grand Lodge of the order will be organ
ized in Wilmington on the 17th of April.
How to Explode a Lamp. ,
The Scientific American gives some of
the circumstances which lead to .the ex-'
plosion of kerosene lamps, the philosophy
of all of tbem being that the flame may
pass down the wick and ignite the vapor
which, accumulates in the .upper portion
of the lamp. This vapor is not an explo
sive as the term is ordinarily .understood,
but when it is confined so that the gasscs
resulting from its combustion cannot escape
freely into the open air tbe vessel confin
ing it will be shattered. This ignition of
the vapor may be brought about as fol
lows ; 1
1. A lamp may be standing on a tableor
mantle, and a slight putf of air from the
open window or door may cause an ex
plosion. 2 A lamp be taken up quickly from a
tabh or mantel and instautiy exploded
3. A lamp is taken out into the entry
where there is a draft, or out of doors, and
an explosion ensues.
4. A lighted lamp is taken . up a llight
of stairs, or is raised quickly to place it
on the mantel, resulting iri an explosion..
In these cases the mischief is done by the
air movement either b3T suddenly check-
mg tne aratt, or lorcing air ctown tne
chimney against the flame.
5. Blowing d)wn the chimney to extin
guish the light is a frequent cause .f ex
plosion. ;
C. Lamp explosions have . Uvn caused
by using a chimney broken oil" at the top,
or one that has a piece broken' out, where
by the. draft ...is variable, and the IJamc
unsteady.
7; Sometimes a thoughtless person puts
a small wick in a large burner, thus leav
ing considerable space along the edges of
the wick. An old burner, with its air-
draft clogged up, which rightfully should i
be thrown away, is sometimes continued
in use, ane the final result is an explosion.

A Story and a Moral. -
An esteemed politician of the old school,
whose ardor for the Ameiican or Know
Nothing party was worthy of all praise, as
a mere matter of ardor, once illustrated
tne dangers then besetting their newly
fledged party by the couditiou of the in
habitants of Jerusalem during the siege
under Titus. It will be remembered in
that case the division1 of the inhabitants
,was under two leaders, and that instead
of fighting the legions of Kome on the out
side of the walls, they found time to fight
among j themselves until gaunt famiue
stalkedabroad in the city of David.
At this juncture Joscphus oft'ered his
mediatorial services for the sake of peace,
but was rudely repulsed by the two fac
tions'which were striving for the mastery
of the'eity; while on the other hand a
large number of the inhabitants even
risked all by . trying their fortunes w ith
the enemy rather than'dic by starvation.
Instead of being saved from their
misery, however, they were only chang
ing a situation .made desperate and nn-.
bearable by their own cowardice, for one
horrid in the extreme. For preparatory
to their desertion these wretches swal
lowed as much gold coin as they could,
and the enemy -discovering this valuablo
secret, instead of welcoming their late foes
as a brave enemy should, straightway
sought for the hidden treasures in the
famine-cursed bodies of the Jews.
