In the Church calendar yesterday was the Feast of the Annunciation as well as Palm Sunday, and Sunday bcTore Easter. Cardinal noses and navy bluo handker chiefs arc not uncommon, owiug to the severe colds that arc getting too common now. 1 Heavy casterl winds prevailed 3-ester-day and last nightand it is not unlikely that we may hear of some disasters on the coast. , - " This morning .'opened beautifully enough but beforo noon the sky . was overs.ist and. there was a sensible decrease in temperature. Saloon keepers have been seized with the ''blue-glass' mania. They arc adopting blue-glass tumblers as a ?2ecific against any ailment containing a touch of monkev. In some mauncr, 'hard to explain, an error crept into our Market reprots on Saturday, in giving a sale of N rosin as good strained. Accidents will happen sour: times. Very; elegant silk hosiery for ladies have rai'Jb'aek lace mcdalions inserted at the instep, and around . the medalion a wreath of raised embroidery. Others arc made with alternate stripes of lace and silk. - New Dental Firm. WeTdircct attcuLon to the advertise ment of Dr. 'Ihos. B. C, MONDAY, MARCH Easter Services, Ah Easter Festival of the Sunday School children of St. John's. Parish is to take place in the Church next Sunday afternoon. This Festival Is to consist of a musical, celebration in the shape of choral services by the children. A vcry interesting programme has been prepared and the celebration will be in every way propriate to the day. . Robbery of Plants, " Some rascal robbed thy plant pit in the garden of a lady residing en Chestnut street' between Second and Third, on last S:ifnrdiiv ninht " The l)it was full (. f ..v.. C i plants and tlie rascal was evidently posted as he took only the choicest of the plants, some of which had been put there only the day before. Those who leave theii rdants exnosed to the' depredation, of thieves should have a Herce dog on the premises. Shifted Her Ground. . Schr Etta May, from Philadelphia for this port, with coal for Mr. J. A . Springer, which! went ashore on the 21st of last month at New Inlet; having proved a to tal loss, floated a day or two since and now lies stranded at a point about half a mile westward of the point' where she was lost. The theory is that the coal must have gone through the bottom ami that the frame of the vessel, thus lightened, has floated off. There is nothing about the hull worth wrecking save the iron that is in it. ' ' The Thermometer. From the United States Signal Oflice at this .place we obtain (ho following report of the thermometer, as taken this- morn ing ai 7:31 o'clock : Augusta, 43 ; Charleston, -19 ; Cincin nati, j 34; Jacksonville, 40, y Knox ville, 38; Lynchburg, 50 ; Memphis, 3G; Mobile, 42; Montgomery, 42; Xash ville, 34; New Orleans, 53; New York 39; Norfolk, 61; Pittsburg, 46V JSa van nab, 48 ; St. Louis, 28 ; Washington, 45 ; Wilmington, 55 . The Alarm of Fire. The fire bells. were rung last night about 7 o;c!6ck and every body turnedout to at tend it, but a strict search failed to find any thing of the kind any where in the city lirqets. The red glow of fire was seen far to the South of tlie cjfv and evidently some distance below the city limits, and that was all that could be discovered. It is reported to day that an old barn about a mile below the citv limits was burned. It was fortunate that the tire was not in the city as a perfect gale of wind was blowing at the time from .the East. Wilmington Municipal Election. We; learn by special telegram from; Wil mington .that at the municipal election in that place on Thursday, that of the Alder men elected four were Democrats, four Radicals and two independent Demo crats. ! The Democratic party in Wilmington must have improved very much recently in strength if it can afford , the luxury of electing independent candidates. It speaks very badly for the discipline and organiza tion of the party, knowing as well as we do the high charctcr and eminent qualifi cations of the rcgu'ar candidates who were defeated, that independents should have been elected. If this be a sample of the Democracy of AVilmington the outlook for it is bad, very izA:Raleiyh Obserccr. Ladies' Spring Styles, The spring openings of ladies' dress goods and novelties in the Northern cities, indicate that the prevailing trim ming is French galloon, a new article of embroidery in all colors, aud used in pro fusion. Dress skirt are, narrow, and lit close to the figure, with pull-backs. Bustles' have been abandoned and loop ing dispensed with. Street dresses sti'l arc worn with considerable trains. Buntings of liucu fabric are fashionable for costumes, trimmed iu galloon and tish scalc buttous. Novelties ;ire shown in -jackets trimmed in galloon with a triple vest and doliinans iu silk au I Sicilian, trimmed with lace aud crochet ornaments. Jackets and dolmans will be much worn. Dress goods have a- tendency to India tashmerc colors, which they imitate as nearly as practicable. Iaccs, silks, hosiery and the numerous lines of goods suitable for the ladies are iu varied designs, and colors. In this age of educatiou and general in telligence, the household is hardly complet, without a Cornish & Co. Piano or Organ. Mr. West, who lives at Sans Sou ci, had the misfortune of losing all of Ins chick ens on Saturday last. We understand that the Wadesboro Herald will be issued daily during - the approaching session of Mecklenburg Presbytery The entire series will he furnished to subscribers at 25 cents. This will be an excellent opportunity for those who do not attend the meeting to keep fully informed, day. by day, of its pro ceedings. How to Sleep. A German physiologist states that the heating of the earth by the sun causes magnetic currents, from the equator to each pole. Such being the case, persons suffering from sleeplessness! should pay Lattention to their position at night, and lie iu the direct ton of these currents. Rest-hssness-and want of sleep result from lying across them. The head to the North is the best position to tne West is the worst. Physicians iu charge of hospitals attend to the dictions in which the beds arc placed, and with the best results. The Naval Cadetshlp. WTe understand that our voting friend, Eddie Anderson , has received the appoint ment to Annapolis which was awarded last Summer to Master Borden in a com petitive examination. The latter; having failed to pass the physical examination required has relinquished the appointment, which has been proffered to Eddie Ander- son, who. was; next on the list, v ile has accepted it and will at once prepare to fill the appointment. One More Unfortunate. Maria Hodges, a colored woman who has been laboring under mental aberra tion for some time past was sent to this city on Saturday morning by the commis sioners of Brunswick county to be ex amined by physiciaus, with a view of as certaining her, true condition. Drs. W. J. H. Bellamy and T. F. Wood examined the unfortunate woman and pronounced her iusane and stated that she was unable to take care of hersell and should be pro vided for by the county. Another evi dence of the need of an ins nc asylum fori the Colored people in this section of the State. ..!' PUCk. The publication of this humorous aud satirical weekly, so long known as a lead ing political punster in Germany, has been begun in this country and in the English language. One ot the March numbers is now before us. It is profusely illustrated by the celebrated Keppler and its political hits are excellent. Simon Cameron figur ing on the first page as he leaves the Senatorial Chamber for the good of that Chamber. It abounds in fun and humor ous applications' and contains enough good broad laughs to chase away from anybody the most despqudent fit of blue?.. It is a sovereign remedy for hard tinis and will so be fotind by all who may read it. It is issued weekly by the Puck Publishing Company, 13 North William street, New York, at $5 a year. The Beard of Audit . The act authorizing the organization of 'a Board of Audit for this city, passed by the Legislature at its recent session, will be of no value to us unless the Governor acts upon it soon. By t)c provisions of the act the Governor has the appointment of the members of the Board of Audit and it requires of him to appoint these mem bers this month.
