Why, having made up his mind to tackle on some of Henry Y's harness at the Op:ra House to-night, he just gritted his "teeth and turned his face to the wind with the revers ed umbrella before him and stood there uutil the same wind which had turned it nnn wav. turned it back nsatn. He was w , a Returning Boiird iti himself and was determined to get the old thing straight or die in his harness. ! - . : Howes' Great Ciicns. f - We feel perfectly afo in assuring our people that Howes' Grcus aud Sanger a Menagerie, which, are to exhibit here on Monday, will prove a really first-class exhibition. They have performed during the past week in Augusta, Charleston and Columbia and wo have the assurauco of our neighbors of the press in those titles that it is an excellent -show. The riding, they tell us, is very five indeed, and the AugUbUiC!Aro!ticfc d- ComliiutionalUt tells us that it is the best ever seen iu that city ; Madame Dock rill iu her feats of bare-back cquestrauism is truly, won derful, the vaulting and gymnastic ex ercises are of a high order and the papers of Augusta Columbia and Charlotte agree iu vTronouncing it a rare combination for entertainment. I This circus will perform here on Mon day afternoon and night at Camp Lamb and in thc forenoon there will be a grand street pageant, when some idea of the strength and resources of the Troupe may be obtained by all Tvho s?e it. The Storm at Smlthvtlle Supposed Law of two PUot Boats with all on Board. The storm at Smithrille was very se vere and considerable damage was done to the shipping. Schr. Charles, of Beaufort, a ''corn-cracker," which was anchored at Deep Water Point, parted her chains and was driven ashore wnere she now lies stranded. She is uninjured and if the weather moderates will bo .floated again. The pilot boat fitoi? dragged ah'rc on' the oyster rocks below the town and i tjow full of water bat will probally ,1kj saved, and the rudder he I of thiKteani-jr UmUr- AtiY, 'which was lying at the wharf at Smithvilic, was & b;vlly injured that it was found necessary to tow her here to-day where the necessary repairs will be made at once. There was n j damage done to the houses in Stnithville. But the saddest part of thc wliole tale is Jthat which relates to the loss of two pilot boats with their crews. On Wednes day afternoon, the'-day' proceeding the beginning of the storm, the pilot boats Uriah Timmons and Mary K. Sprunt w ere off tho bar on a cruise on thc lookout for vessels. The Timmons was command ed by her owner Capt. C. C. Morse, and the Sprunt by Mr. Robert Walker, Each had a orew of pilots aboard but as yet we have not been able to learn their names or number. Nothing has been seen or heard of them since and there are fears for them,, amounting tobut little less j then a certainty. The wind was duo East at the time, and if thc storm struck them when they were North or East of Frying Pan Shoa's there can be no hope ; if they were South of Frying Pan Shwls they would then Lave been almpst due East of Charleston and would have been driven on to the South Carolina coast where it is possible that they have found a refuge, which is only a possibillity, however, as but few entertain hopes of ever seeing any of them again. i i iiiiii 1 ii X. Supposed Attempt to Break Jail Jailor Howard, uho seems to be a very virilant official, has made some discover ies which seem to indicate auntlr at tempt at jail breaking. The lock of the cell in which Charles Southerland, the colored forger, is confined, has been tam pered with, firstly, it seems, with ah en deavor to pick the lock and then an at tempt to spring the iron bars of the door so that the doer could be forced open. It was evidently done by some one if the prisoners yesterday in thc corridor and is supposed to indicate1 an attempt at a general jail delivery, the object lent to get Southerland out into tho passage way and then under his leadership to make a "rush and overpower the jailor when he next eutcred. Happily, the at tempt was unsuccessful and its timoly discovery has led, to additional precautions of safety. George Riffnold.
