Chat About. Trees No. 4. " llcsidents of Wilmington !oi)' nse-1 to its peculiar climate, arc ;u -t"1 .'aware' how favorably it compares wif'n i-wn'i north and south and- west of us, . as.: having so many elements necessary to the rapid growth and development, cf.shad'j trees not common elsewhere. The magnolia grandiflora flourishes as well ;as iii its na tive element, its noit hern limit as noticed by Dartram a century ag'., being about Dr. Bellamy's plantation. in Brunswick county. It was a f ivorito tifc with the settlers, and all along up the river some of the fine old trees are 'still landing. The magnolia, at the limestone quarry, up the river, was one of tlej largest on the river, but Avas, killed by the raftsmen building their fiijcs too near its routs and trunks. Very many of these trees'. in our town arc symmetrical and healthy, flnd are.cntircly free from the depredations of insects; they will stand the autumnal storms very well, suffering mast in-those winters when there is much ..sleet. It would be well to extend their cultivation further. The threat obstacle bein" in the rearing of seedlings, and the slow" growth of the trees is perhaps the chief cause of their slow extension. In the last year many beautiful young trees were planted and- the coming year there will be a;; many, more perhaps. ' It is not so-difficult to raise plants from the seed if they arc Kowed in a bo, as this secures against the depredations ofground moles; We were sorry to i-'cc at least one fine magnolia, of at least ten years'growth, in a private lot not very favorably sit- uateel for its best development, however, almost ruined by the long" Continued drought. Magnolias are cultivated au far 1 . r- west as Salisbury and Salem, but their development is not vigorous there. In our climate there U no need for an annual festival of tree-planting, a custom which is slowly gaining ground in the Western States, and something' similar is encouraged by Prof. Sargent in Massa chusetts, but it might with propriety be adopted here to encourage the rearing of ; tue .more ueautiiui oi our finauc trcco m the streets.. It was a mistaken- policy Which led to the destruction of .the trees n our business streets. It would be well at this late day to dace-: fine. 1 ices at proper intervals 'where others have been lestroyed, but it should nut he . aieh a luerile attempt as that oi; Market street, between-' Fourth- and Fourteenth streets. By singular good luck the great majority of these trees lived, but -they might as well have been ten vears older as the lit tle saplings they arc And another thing, it is utterly useless to plant trees in any street in which flic grade has n -A been pcrmancntljcstablishcd. It is tobeh -ped that when the row of trees on . -Third street, between. Dock and Nun,- is again taken in hand, that the old and unsightly ones will be replaced by others more valuable; Let. it be remembered that every tree planted increases the amount of health-giving oxygen, besides' being a great protection against the spread ol flame's in time of great (i res. bippincott's Magazine.-- There are several very attractive articles in -LippincoU a Majazinc for July, the opening number of the twentieth volume. If this report be correct :t docs not savor of Reform as our city is too heavily burden ed, with debt to allow pay to two sets of officers (the old and weir) for the same time although it be for only a few days, and it will not meet with the approval of tax-payers who think their tax levies are entirely too high and who look forward to reform - and retrenchment from the present Board.
