The Board of Aldermen were again in session yesterday afternoon. Five hundred copies were ordered printed. Alex. Oldham received tho contract for keeping the city horses, mules and carls. The barbers petition fur thc re-enactment of the Sunday law, whieh was laid on the table at the last 'meeting, was re considered aud the ordinance ije-euaeicd. We have been informed by ore of our North Water street friends who is gen erally up to the times upoa all commercial matters, that it has been reported to tho injury of this port ; at Charleston and at New York also, that vessels drawing only 12 feet of water can load at dir wharves, and that our port charges ares excessive. ' Now, the facts arc these : A'esscls draw ing 13 to 11 feet of water can load with case at our wharves at any time, and by having tjheir cargoes lightered to them bclwecn'thc rip and the bar can load to a depth of l6 feet of water. While tbe stevedores charges arc four cents less on the barrel in Wilmington than in our sister city of Charleston. Our charges are only 2 cents per barrel wMle the Charles ton rates are Or cents per barrel. ..In the matter of lightering We believe the WilmiDgton rates are as cheap if not chea'per in proportion to the distaucc that the articles are transported than' in. any other city on the Atlantic coast. The Chamber of Commerce, wc under stand, has taken or is about to take some action in the matter' and will en deavor to have this false report corrected, '.:t.wu.,.t .ii. 7w3utiie navy for. his cipcditiun to the North role.' y rj' frcra z0 July 7" for ras0, u erkrned to the Clyde r.withl Yixc cl The policemen were paid off to-day, : No interments in BcllcTue Cemetery for the week just ended. We are kindly permitted to publish the following letter from Admiral i Scmmcs; the gallant Confederate privateorsinan and Commander during ; the war of thc dreaded Alabama, written- Ir. JCugene S. Maffit, of this city, acknowledging the reception of the numbers of the Daily Review containing Capt. Maflitt's ad dress"upon the life and services of the late Capt." Jamcrs W. W'o knoAV that anything from the- pen cf the brave Admiral Sqmmcs, the Ne-soii of tho Southern Navy, will.be readwVJi. in terest by all who once sympathized with him in his wild career upon the deep blue sea. '. ..' But here is the letter : Mobile, July 9tu, 1S . My Deab Sir : Your letter of the 5th inst., containing a copy vi our father's memorial address .upoui the life and services of Captain James W . Cooke, of your State, reached me in due course oi mail, for which I thank you. I have read tho addrows with great j.lcaauie, both because of its excellence as a literary pro- duction and because it memory of a worthy Confederate naval officerwhose well-earned lame was m danger of sinking into oblivion. A fine specimen of a young boa constric tor brought here by Capt. George, of the British brig Alfred; from South America, was confined in his cage on board, and was there when last examined, at night. This morning though when the owner 'went to look for his pet to sec if he need ed more food (he having eaten nothing for about thirty days,) to his astonishment he was gone. Considerable consternation ensued among the crew and laborers about the vessel ; but after searching some time he was discovered by the action ofa little dog, who had apparently cither a rafc or something at bay, it proved to be the snake. How to secure him Was now thc puzzle. A pair of blaciismith's tongs, with long handles lashed to make them the required length were rigged up, and the snake perilled at his neck, and by the force of two strong men he was disengaged from his .new lodging place, and secured again in l::s old cage. It transpires now that he had been, loose all night, aud the sailors entirely ignorant of the fact were sleeping as sweetly and innocently as a new born babe, totally unconscious of how near they were to being folded in the embrace of a boa constrictor and quietly hucrzed lo death.
