A large numuer oi -citizens asscmu led around the stage last evening to listen, to the music, but owing to the severe illness of a lady in the neighborhood, the asscm blage was asked to adjourn to the ' Opera House uark. i Some Tew retired to their homes but the number who followed the band was sufficient to tickle the pride o the vainest of the members of the C. C Clwb. We have never heard the band ac quit itself, more handsomely than it did last night, though we were not altogether eatisficd because of the fact that there was not enough of the music. Two old offenders were brought up be fore His Honor, the Mayor pro tern, thi morning, who after a patient hearing of the evidence were summarni diaca of as follows : , Dick Boston, for disorderly conduct on the streets, SS--or five days in the cell an bread and water. George Washington, ah! how have the mighty fallen! who was found sleeping on the piazza of a private residence, cor- nnr of Second and Dock street?, was fined 3-or five days in the solitude pf a cell, there perhaps to meditate upon the chances and changes of this uncertain life. P.of h of the offenders failing to furnish the amount of their fines were accordingly locked up. The court then adjourned. Special Term. A special term of the City Court was held this morning at 10 o'clock after tho Tcnilar term of the morning, to try the case ofGcrrit Walker, for refusing to pay the cart tax of ten cents, imposed by the city on all carts coming to this market. . I It is proposed, or was proposed, to make this a test case to decide the constitutioii tdity of the City' Ordinaucc, and to that end we understand a number of our farm ers in tho' neighborhood of Wilmington have joined hands with Mr. Walker upon his refusal to pay tho tax. Mr. Walker was yesterday arrested by a warrant from Mayor Planner and the trial fixed for to-, day at 10 o'clock. At the request of the counsel for the defendant, tho case was continued by HLs Honor, the Mayor, un til Tuesday next at 10 o'clock. Contin gent, however, upon Walker and others rnntinuinfr to av the tax in the meAn time. This arrangement concurred in all sides the court adjourned. on Maj. Jno. W. Dunham. The Wilson Advance is publishing some reminiscences of its town, and we clip the following from an article in its this week's issue : i Maj. Dunham comenced the practice of law about this time and was afterwards associated with Col. Kenan. In 1870 ha was elected to the House and in 1872 represented this District with W. K. Davis Esq., of Franklin, in the Senate. Maj. D. is a fluent writer and able debater, and oc cupied a prominent position in the Leg islature. He 1 was one of the first volun teers from the county, and proved a brave and gallant soldier. He was severely wounded in the leg which has caused him great suffering and pain. , Maj. Dunham removed to, Wilmington in 1873 were he at present resides. He was elected by the Legislature last winter Clerk of the Criminal Court of that city withcut solicitation cn Lu part, which was evidence of his great personal popnarity and a small tribute to his patriotic serf ices in behalf of his native State. . , Freak of Nature. We saw this morning twin cantaloupes which were large and perfectly developed. They joined together on the side; the con necting ligaments being very nearly in the middle. This is a freak of nature we have never seen or heard of before,. He have seen twin apples, .peaches, etc., and generally one of ; them would be an abortion, but such was not tho case vith the cantaloupes. '--- - "... .. , flhc Church Services.
