A heart-rending occurrence on Saturday last Has shrouded the community of Lil lington, in Pender county, in the dusky drapery of gloom and mourning. One of the best families in that couuty has been suddenly stricken with deep anguish and unutterable ericf. Ode of the noblest young men of Tender has fallen a vitim to a sudden and accidental death from the explosion of a -loaded gun in his own hands. It was that cenial and whole- 'souletl young gentleman, Mr. John Mon tague, son of that noble old Roman, Mr P. Montague, of the township of Lincoln in that county. As the distressing news comes to us, the son was hunting in the woods near his father's residence, accom panied by a younger brother. As a deer came running by, Mr. Montague, with his gun cocked, made some attempt to shoot the deer, but failing to fire the gun, as it seem?, he recovered it from a shooting po sition and placed it suddenly upon the ground, the muzzle pointing to a position between his chin and throat. , The shock of putting the breech upon the I ground caused an explosion, the entire load pass ing entirely through the skull and brains. As the younger brother approached, the agonies of death were upon Mr. Montague. Death closed the sorrowful scene before the neighbors and afflicted family could be summoned to the spot. Mr. Montague was one of the most popular and promis ing young men in Pender, and was the pride and hope and staff of his aged and now prostrate and heart-broken father. There exists a profpund and wide-spread sympathy for the father and mourning sisters and relatives of the deceased. Years ago a similar calamity happened i to the same family. 1 Another son was killed in the late war.
