WILMINGTON, N. C, MONDAY, OCTOBER Finding the Body. The report ot the suicide of Xed Collins, the colored fireman on beard the steam tug AlpJta, an account of which was pub lished by us on Friday last, proves true. The body was iound yesterday in the water near Smithvillo by a boat of the revenue cutter Colfax, which towed it ashore. Considerable Coal. Those passing up Front street arc nat urally attracted by the enormous piles of coal and all kinds of coal at that- banked up in Mr. Springer's yard, corner Front and Mulbery streets. Large as it is, how ever, all of it will bo sold this winter as well as the huge piles of wood which are gathered there ready for the cold season to open. One More this Season. Capt. Lippitt proposes to give one more excursion this season. It is to take place on Wednesday next, the I7th inst., on the steamer Vn derhill, and if this bright and beautiful weather holds until then he will doubtless have a large crowd on board. There will be a band for dancing on board and Capt. Lippitt promises to spare no exertion which will conduce to the comfort. and pleasure of his guests. New Tobacco Store. We invite attention to the advertise ment of Mr. Wallace H. Styron, as it ap pears in this issue. He has opened a very attractive display in the storo on Market street, recently occupied by Col. Hedrick. He has in stock numerous choice brands of tobaccos and cigars which will be sold at the lowest living prices. Mr. Styron has had seven years' experi ence with Mr. D. Pigot-., th. veteran to bacconist, and he therefore knows just what goods to oiler. .We bespeak for him a fair share of patronage. A Silver Wedding. A gentleman in this city, one of the leading citizens of the place, celebrated his silver wedding last Saturday night, f r it was just a quarter of a century to a day, that this gentleman and his fair lady took upon themselves the sacred r vows of matrimony. The occasion was one of ex ceeding interest ; the attendance was large, the presents numerous and the good wishes of those assembled without meas ure. A very interesting feature of the occasion, however, was the baptism of this couple's first grandchild, threo gen erations of the family having therefore been present. Deficient. If there is a place in the country which needs a .systematized for alarm, it is Wil mington. Thomarkct house bell upon tho alarm of fire to-day sounded the 1st, 3d and 4th fire districts and as a conse quence the fire department did not know in what district to go. Tlie Lilllc Giant went down Princess street, the Adrian up Fourth. It is no fault of the -department that they do not on some occasions reach tha scene of conflagration sooner, but the entire blame belongs to and should be changed to a deficient fire alarm system. Would it not be money well expended of our city authorities would cause to be erected in different.portions of the city, fire alarm boxes communicating by wire with the Police Headquarters and engine houses ? - The Blondes. Mile. Duclo's troupe of blonde beau ties are to appear here on the Thursday and Friday evening of this week, the 18th and 10th instants, and the posters are up. around the city, attracting the at tentionof all. They are "sensational stars? of several magnitudes, each of them an individual Venus, to judge by 'the anatom cal display in the posters, and they will not play here to empty benches. The Richmond Dispatch says of them : Mile. Duclo's blondes played to another large audience last night at the Theatre, and their performances were received with hearty applause. Tha statuary embraced the Three Graces, Classic Groupings, Love Seducing Innocence, Innocence Prefers Love to Riches, Dalphine and, Cbloe, Queen of the Ballet, Simply to Thy Cross 1 Cling, Toilet of Venus, Power of Love, Statues of La Pantheon, and was similar to that part of the programme of the night before. The boxing exercise of Miss Rose Harland and Mr. Harry Franklin was in teresting to many present, and both par ties were at once recognized as adept3 with the gloves. The Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company. From a statement recently made by one of our most influential daily papers, ve find that the Liverpool; and London and Globe Insurance Company receives the largest premium income of any fire com pany doing business in this city. This is as it should be. We know of none more deserving of public confidence . than it, and its past record is thebest proof of its title to this, and is also one which may be summed up in , very few words. It has been in existence about forty-two y eats. In that time it has paid out to policy-hold-era very nearly seventy millions of dol lars. This is a showing which cannot be surpassed by any company in existence. The history of the Liverpool and Lon don and Globe is without a blot. It in variably pays its losses, it never makes bad investments, and it never fails to make money for its stockholders. It is jacile princess amongst the insurance instituions of Great Britain, and in this, its adopted country, it stands a splendid instance of what fire insurance compauies may be when rightly admin istered. The above is clipped from a recnt copy of the New York Trade Reporter. By reference to the reports made to the Sec retary of State for the twelve months ending the 30th of June 1877, we j find that tho Liverpool & London & Globe received the largest premium income of any fire insurance company doing busi ness in this State. This shows that! the popularity of this great company is ' not confined to New York, but, like its agen cies, extends over tho whole civilized world. The energetic firm of Jno.1 W. Gordon & Bro. represent this company here, and in their hands it is not likely to lose the high position it has taken in North Carolina. ' Appletons' Journal For November presents a striking series of contrasts in the subjects of some of its papers. There is an illustrated article on tho scenery, the towns, and the people, of Fuget Sound and Washington Territory, and an eminently picturesque description of the curious places and odd people on the Volga, in far-off Eastern Russia ; then anew contributor describes in a fresh and dramatic manner life in the art-studios of Paris: while Mr. Julian Hawthorne depicts the great English volunteer gath ering at Wimbledon. In,additioD, there are-two short stories of New England life, and one of New York society ; while a second paper on phases of far-Western life describes the attempt to civilize a youthful Blackfoot Indian making altof gether a very kaleidoscope in variety and contrast. The article, however, that will be likely to attract most attention is Mr. Burliogame's account of 'Dead Magaeines,' an the American mnrrazines and reviews that at one time flourished, but which time has lefi wrecks on its shores. This hitherto written chapter of American literary tory is exceedingly entertaining. as nn- bis- Talk about Thiers" is full of excellent gossip pertaining to this famous French man; and Mr. De Costa has a pleasing and valuable paper "Concerning Autumn,'! The authors of the short stories which are well contrasted in incidents, and good in quality, are jEdgar Fawcctt, Edward Bellamy, Lizzie W. Champney, and Rudolph Lindau. Mr. Rsinhart gives us illustrations to one of the poems, a wdl cxecuted frontispiece, tho subject - being antique and . tho treatment eminently artistic. The serial storiesy By Celia's Arbor" and "Cherry Ripe," are con tinued, and the editorial departments as readable as usual. - arc 15, 1877. NO. 227 The Thermometer.
