Rose and Harry Watkins and troupe are expected to arrive to-morrow on the noon train. He who would acquire fame must not show himself afraid of censure. The dread of censure is the death of genius. .The poot who wrote that his lovo re sided in a bower of roses has decided after a1! lo 20 it alone. No cards. Bureau trunks are the latest, and the ba'ggagc smasher sighs as he reflects that they have no mirror attachment. The box sheet for the sale of scats to the performance of the Watkins troupe at the Opera House to-morrow evening will be open to-morrow morning. Another of the very interesting series of letters written by Rev Dr. Bernheirn, from abroad, will be found on the third page of this issue. Ons day is a feast and another a amine. Yesterday we had five interesting cases to report for His Honor, Mayor Dawson's Court; to-day nary-a-one. So be it ever thus. Amen ! ' , It is said that not one American in a hundred has a handsomo Cjhin. This is due to the fact that so many pf our fellow citizens give nearly all their timo to the cultivation of cheek. t - ' The steamship Ashland, Capt. Dough erty, of the Clyde Line from New York, put in an appearance at this port to-day for the first time this season. The ..4s7i land has a large carrying capacity and will probably make cotton scarce around here in a day or two. By notice published elsewhere it will be seen that a special meeting, of the stockholders of tLc Wilmington Compress and Warehouse Company will be. held at the Bank of New Hanover on Thursday morning for the purpose of taking steps to procure an additional press. The Convention will adjourn to-morrow. The Purcell in Norfolk. Col. J. R. Davis, formerly of the Purcell House in this city, was here yesterday. His new hotel in Norfolk, formerly known as the National 'Hotel ,1will be ready for the reception of visitors in a short time. Col. Davis informs us that the name will be changed and that his hotel in Norfolk will be known as the Purcell House. Lost Money. According to the Charlotte Observer Cole's Circus 1 did a losing business in Western North Carolina. Mr. CjIo 1 said it would have paid him to have remained in Salisbury the five days which he spent on that , road, paid all the salaies and oth er expenses and 200 per day extra, and done nothing. At all points on the Western road where the canvas was put up immense crowds were on hand, but few attended the circii3. At one place $11 was taken in at the night perfor mance. .The money was refunded and no exhibition given. At Marion, Mor ganton, Hickory and Statesvillc the circus lost heavily. These losses were partially retrieved at Charlotte. If the Circus had come to Wilmington, instead of going South it would probably have retrieved all of its losses here. Scribners for November. The November number of Scribner is the first of its fifteenth volume. Edward Eggleston's new novel, "Boxy is begun, with an illustration by Walter Snirlaw. The scene is laid in Indiana, where lived "The Hoosier Schoolmaster", and other interesting characters with whom Dr. Eggleston has made the world familiar. Henry James, Jr., has a short story in this number,4 Bret Harte a poem, John Burroughs a tramping paper entitled "A Bed of Boughs," and Gaorge M. Towe a sketch of the career of Thiers. The open ing illustrated article Is one of Scribner's sporting series, entitled "Canvas back and Terrapin," by W. McKay Laffan, of Balti more, illustrated by the author himself. This paper tells about methods of hunting Which will be new to most readers. Mr. Frank R. Stockton comes back from the island of Nassau with glowing accounts of its winter climate, and a number of pictures of curious and interesting pcrajns and things there Col. Wiring's usefully and amusingly illustrated papers on the saddle-horse are begun, the first paper being devoted to thoroughbreds and Ara bians. An article on "The Countess Potocka" gives the romantic life of a lady, with whose portrait (here reproduced) every one is familiar, but of whose history nearly every one is ignorant. Mrs. Hcr rick's article on "Bee" is accompanied by thirteen illustrations drawn on the block by the author. Miss Trafton's story "His Inheritance" is continued, and tells Shout "The Coustn on the Jersey Shore," and "A Game of Cards." An article by John G. Stevens on "The Eric Canal" in which he predicts its' abandonment is likely to be as much talked about as any thing in the present number. Dr. Holland writes about "Women's Winter Amusements," "The Bondage of the Pulpit," and "Indications of Progress." The Old Cabinet contains, among other things, a letter from L. Clarke Davis on "Joe Jefferson in Lcradon," ana n Bric-a-Brae, Frank R. Stockton has a contribu tion which shows how every man Can be come his own letter-writer. ' The Thermometer.
