V Some one says that a- cauliflower 18 an educated cabbage. Wells, some men know are cauliflowers. we A man can sleep in church now with out the everlasting fly disarranging his Sunday frame of mind. Cicero wrote. "Nothing maintains its bloom forever,'" but he never studied a modern actress' complexion. It is better that a woman should keep her stockings in repair than that she should know the origin of the rainbow. A Goldsboro girl, who is no chicken, has got a young man whom she calls Hennery and she "sets" on his knee. Nobody can tell how many disputes for the front of the bed have been settled by moving the bedstead into the centre of the room. Chief Joseph declined surrenedring his gun to Oh I Obi Howard. Cunning old Indian; he knew that he would never see it asain. . It turns out that Gen. Howard is a member of the peace society. So much have been inferred from his recent cam yaign against-Jose ph. - Plenty and indigence depend upon the opinion every one has of them: and riches, no more than glory or health, have on more beauty or pleasure than theirjpossessor is pleasod to lend them. Take care of the cents, and the dollars will take care of themselves, provided you, can get them. Never neglect to pick up a dollar in preference to a cent. Don't pick up cither if your can 't find them. A Tender county man insists that he saw a red and black snake forty feet long, and as big as a barrel of whisk'ey. We have iio doubt that he did, but ho un questionably saw the barrel of whiskey before he saw the snake. Compliments to our Representatives. Hon. A. M. Waddeli has been appoint ed by Speaker Randall Chairman of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads which is the third Committeo ia impor tance in the House. Hon. W? M. Robbins, of Salisbury, has been placed on the Ways and Means Commmittee. ' ! Uy the way we learn that Col. Wad- dell was uot among tbe members who went to Ba races. t i more to attend the Pimlfco Mitt: Festival or the Reformation. Yesterday being the Sunday nearest Reformation Day, the day was appro priately observed by the Evangelical Lutheran congregation in this city. In the morning Rev. Dr. Bernheiro, pastor of St. Paul's Churcb, preached in German to his congregation, and in the evening his discourse was in the English lan guage. His lecture1 was repeated with historical allusions to Martin Luther, and was both full of interest and instruction. The music, both vocal and instrumental, was' very fine, and added greatly to the impressiveness of the occasion. ' Lcctnreby a Colored Divine.' The Rev. W. G. McKinney, colored, who it is stated is lecturing for the pur pose of raising funds tolaid in the erec tion of a chapel for the benefit of th colored Episcopalians of Charlotte, will deliver a lecture this evening at Iippitt' Hall on Front, between Dock n Orange streets, on the subject oP'Natnnl Talent The lecture ben vrader the auspices of the Church will of course be freefrom any political references whateTer. - ! i There is no charge fcr adalssion, the lecturer depending entirely BPa. h mnornitv rf Lis audience, to asasl fcisa in his nndsrtakfcg. 1 ".- --: f: Daily . Superior Court. His Honor Judge 'Moore appeared ia Court this morning looking a little worsted from his encounter with the chills and fevers that attacked him last week. The case of the Bank of New Hanover vs Williams, Black & Co., which was in progress or trial wnen liis ttonor was taken sick, was again taken up and the counsel for the defence the, Hon. George Davis, continued his argument. The case will probably be given to the jury this afternoon. United States Courts The U. S. District Court convened in the TJ. S. At an adjourned meeting of tbe mera- hera of the BarjJield in the Court House this morning, Hon: Geo Davis presiding, it was decided to adjourn again until to morrow morning at 10 o'clock. The ob ject of the adjournod meeting held to-day was for the purpose of receiving the re port of the committee appointed last Monday to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the loss the profession has sus tairfedin the death of the late Adam Empie, Esq Maj. F. I). Poisson, one of the members of the committee, made tbe motion to ad- journ until to-morrow, which was carried ..Military Redivivus. The Martial spirit of the Old North State is being rapidly revived, already there are nearly enough companies in the State sufficient to organize two regiments, and the organization of new companies is still going on. The students at Davidson College have sixty members enrolled for a company, and have made application to the Adjutant-General for accoutrements. The Albemarle Times published, in Edenton says "we have determined to have a mili tary company in Edenton. Already there are rery neat enough names to organize.'' Speaking of military movements reminds us that the Adjutant-General of the State has issued by command of the Governor a congratulatory orderwhich 'we publish elsewhere in this issue, to all of the mem bers of the North Carolina State Guard, who responded to his call, by appearing in review during the recent State Fair.
