MEETING OF THE SSTOCKIIQLDEUS OF THE Ay. & W'. 11A1LEOA1). The stockholders of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad met at 9J o'clock this morning in the President's office. On motion of Hon. R. R. Thanksgiving day falls on Thursday , and Christmas on Tuesday. R The New Coast Enterprise. Dr. Tbos. B. Carr, who went out from this city last week to look over a route for the proposed water way which is to connect this city first with the Sounds and then with New River, returned here last evening, well pleased with his experiences and with the prospects ahead for his company, the Wilmington and New River Steam Navigation Company. Dr. Can left Masonboro last Thursday afternoon and arrived at New River on Saturday af ternoon at 5 o'clock. He stopped with Capt, John Hill, formerly a pilot on this coast and engaged in running the block ade during the war, where he remaiued on Sunday. On his return from New River to Sloop Point, mid-way between New River and Masonboro, the distance was accomplished in six hours and from New River to Ma sonboro iu 19 hours. The entire trip was made in a small canoe with two colored hands, both of them perfectly ignorant of the route North of Wrightsvillc. It was all made in the Sounds. From Topsail to Masonboro Dr. Carr kept the land channel straight through and made the distance in three hours. The balance of the way the boat kept the channel next to the mainland. Thef. banks from the Topsail Inlet to New River are high and heavily timbered except in places where fine farms are in cultivation. Dr. Carr does not think that there is any danger of stormsj'intcrfering with navigation at New Inlets One fact in connection with this trip may prove of interest. In the report of a survey of the inland Atlantic waters, made in 1875, this passage occurs in that part relative to. tho' Cape Fear Coast: "These Sounds are called Stump, Middle, Topsail, Masonboro and Myrtle, and are for the most part occupied by an intricate net-work of channels through which a canoe cannot poss." To show that this survey was not quite so accurate as it may have been, Dr. Carr passed through the entire distance from Masonboro to New Inlet in a canoe. The incorporators of the Wilmington and Row River Steam Navigation Com pany are Geo. llarriss, Esq, Dr. Thos. B. Carr and Col. B. R. Moore, and they will meet this afternoon to decide in regard to pecuniary matters and when to commence work. They propose to open a canal, with a tide-lock, from the Capo Fear to the Sound, about six miles below the city, and thence to open up the Sound to New River. We can already seo (in prospec tive, of course,) a steamer discharging her cargo on the wharf at the Banks where some good Samaritan will have opened a house of accommodation and where fami lies can live iu cottages during the Sum mer, while daily and rapid communica tion will bo held by steam power with the city. Pender County Board of Health. We are indebted to a friend at Burgaw, for the following: A Board of Health for Pender county has been duly organized. The following physicians of Pender are members. Dr. W. F. Ennett, President; Dr. George F Lucas, Vice-President; Dr. It. F. Sanders5 Secretary; Dr. James II. Powers, Treasur er. Besides these officers; the following members are appointed upon the fol lowing sections, and are expected to make written reports embracing the subjects to which they have been csspecially assign ed. A Constitution and By-Laws, in accor dance with tho law establishing a Stata Board of Health, have been adopted. The meetings will be held quarterly at the time and place designated by the Presi dent. The proposed North Carolina Me dical Journal, has been cordially endorsed and rccommimded by the Board. Returned. Deputy Marshal J. N. -VanSoclct, who left here several days ago for Albany, N. Y., having in charge Chas. -W. Lawton and Conrad Houseman, convicted at the last term of U. S. Court, for robbing the mail, returned last evening haviDU made the trip in four days.' He .reports the weathr in Albany to bo as fair and balmy as it is here. 20, 1877. J NO. 258 The New Silver Dollar How it is to he Made. We gather the following description ( f the die for moulding the new silver dol lar, from an exchange: In anticipation of the passage of some silver liil a die has leen prepared for the new silver dollar. It is a great improve ment over the old. i )n the obverse side is a medallion head of liberty, with sprigs of cotton and corn in place of the traditional fillet. The execution of the head is very - ... nne, and the arrangement ot the hair on the forehead and the disposition of the lines around the cliiu and neck arc treated with remarkable grace and freedom. The reverse has an eagle displayed, and the motto, "United States of America." and "E riuribus I'mwi" with the date where the secondary motto, "In God We Trust' is to go, is not yet determined, but it will not be left off. A study was made of an eagle from life for the coin, but it did not prove satisfactory, and tho antique' tyre- was followed. The design meets the diffi culty of suggesting relief without making tho engraving of the die unreasonably hicrh. -1 'The Galaxy. It is safe to sa' that The. dtilaxij has during the year just closed, contributed its full share to give interest and value to our current literature, and this fact is the best guarantee tiiat it .will u.-. fail Sp readers in the year to come.
