The new bridge at that point, the tempo rary structure, erected by the S. & R. It. R., has been seriously threatened, but it is thought that it will hold together. A raft I of drift-wood has lodged against it and at 11 o'clock this forenoon the bridge was out of lino eighteen inches. ' This however, ' according to the peculiar con struction of the bridge, does not necessa rily insure, the destruction of the bridge, although it will prevent the crossing ol rains for a day or two, compelling the authorities to transfer maijs and passen gers at that point. When thG waters have subsided and the raft is removed, it will be a comparatively easy matter to put the bridge in good order again. The authori- tioshere do not seem alarmed and it is generally belieyed that trains will be cress g I the Roanoke aga'n in two or three days. Ball at Smithvilie. Quite a large and well-attended ball given under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, took place at the Academy in Smithvilie, on last Friday evening. The music for the dancers struck its first note about 8 o'clock, when the gentlemen led their fair partners to places on the lloor, and the cotillion, interspersed with round dances, occupied the time of the merry couples until 10 o'clock, when the party all repaired to the supper room, where a sumptuous repast awaited them. Alter supper, an adjournment to the ball room was in order, when young muiiifad maid ens, old menaud matrons, indulged in the giddy mazes of the dance uutil the wee sma' hours of the -morning All went merry as a marriage bell and everybody. and his neighbor weut home highly da- lighted with the evening's entertainment A burglar who wts stopped by a chai: a5d ho wns trvin" to tm;l a nusUM' link. . i The old year goes out riht pleasantly. notwithstanding the fact .that yesterday and last night were cold and disagreeable m STOVES pUDDING MOULDS, Batter Kettk?, ) Syllabub Churns, Egg Poacher.", .
