It is not thought that amputation will ba necessary. The Pee Dee Herald. The Wadcsboro Pee Dee Herald comes to us this week greatly enlarged and vastly improved. It is now published as an eight-page paper and wc hope that Col. Ed. Liles is happy at last in having a little more elbow room in which to give expressions to his "obnoxious" Bourbonis tic sentiments. Right cordially do we congratulate the publisher, Mr. Patrick, on this indication of prosperity. Ho is entitled to lit , as he is hard. working and energetic, in every sense of the words. Good Enough. Col. Liles, of the Wadesboro Herald, met Gen. Matt Taylor lak week for the first time, and it was a case of love at first sight. Hear what hesays of our ac complished Brigadier: ' . ' ' Wc had the pleasure of forming the ac quaintance of Gen. Matthew P. Taylor, of Wilmington. He was here attending the election of Field Officers for the Second Regiment NJ C. State Guards. The General is a gentleman of prepossessing appearance, and looks to be about forty five or fifty years old; has a fine, manly form and if we had had the "picking" of a person to fill the position he holds, we would certainly have "picked" him, and have thought that we had found the handsomest lotfdng military man in the State. . North Carolina Medical Journal. The first number of this new monthly is before us, and right glad are we to welcome it. It is a very handsome pub lication, creditable in every respect, and we should judge- opens under very favora ble auspices. Its contents are divided into various heads, such as Original Com munications (and iu this department we notice an article entitled "Resection of tha Femur," by Dr. W. W. Lane, of this city). Selected Papers, Correspondence, Editorial, Reviews, Medical Annotations, Collectanea and Answers to Correspond ents, Biographical Notices, Obituary, Books and Periodicals Received. It is published here monthly by Drs. M. J. Dc Rossct and Thos. F. Wood, at $3 a year, and is printed by Messrs. Jackson & Bell. The enterprise has our most cordial wishes for its sucecss. Tor the Ladies. A pietty model of a capote bonntt is quite seasonable in appearance; it is of bronze felt, trimmed with a wreath of this tles and diminutive fir cones, grasses and moss of every conceivable shades of green, a few loops of sal in ribbon at the back, and a double -niche t tilleul silk under the border. Lace will, if possible, be used even more than ever. While it 1s always tiesirable to Lave it real there is not an absolute neces sity for it. ILose who can afford them s'.ill clim; to real thread and guipure, but for those to whom the real is unattainable the Fiench is pretty and within reach, and allowable by fashion. The lace used for undergarments is all of one kind, although it is distinguished with a number of names a tew cf which are Clovis, Mireconit and Torchon. j For evening dresses a galloon called the "Rose" is much in favor ; it represents a garland of bright-hued roses, with the edges cut cut, so as to define the shape of the dowers. On silk of a very dark shade this rose galloon" is most effective, while at the same time it trims very pale evening shades beautifully. Another exquisite garniture for evening toilettes is bands of gauze or India muslin, embroidered in lovely designs, with silk floss. Flowers in natural colors and shaded foliage are the usual patterns. . Woolen stockings come in' the long English shape, to drab colors, and are far handsomer in finish this winter than ever before. Superior j Court. The day has been consumed in arranging the Calendar for the next three wr eks. Yo cases have been, brought forward for trial, and there will be none tried until -Monday of j next week, at which time the Jury has bean summoned to appear. Sudden Death. j A gentleman by the nane;'oComstock', from Essex, Ct., died very sudden)' this morning at the Purccll House. :IIe was a consumptive and had ;. been spending several months at Aiken, S. C, in the hope of finding relief but of late had be come so much worse that he determined to return, home to die. He arrived here this morniug from the South in company with his daughter and son-in-law, and. was in such a critical condition that, he could go no further. He was taken froni the train to the Purcell House in a dying- condition and breathed "his last, about twenty minutes after reaching the hotel. He was about 57 years of -age. His remains will be taken to Connecticut for inter ment and will leave here on the train this! evening. - f Wadesboro Herald. Tlie late Chief Justice. There is one fact connected with the brilliant legal career ot Judge Pearson to which no reference has. been made, .so far as we have sf en, in the several obituary notices published of him. JLIe was the Jirst American Jurist who ever received the distinction ot having his opinions and rulings quoted by the Court of the Queen's Bench the highest, tribunal in England. This took place soon after! his elevation to our Supreme Court bench, and ever since, he has been looked upon -there, as well as here and elsewhere, as one of the very brightest judicialjights of tho age. All efforts to establish a graded school having failed, the community have deter mined to open the Golds boro Fri School on Monday, the 28th of January. . Wadesboro Herald : We have in. j our possession a chicken with : two sets of wings one set is in the ' usual place; and the other set come oift at its knee joints and drag on the ground. It is a healthy looking chicken and is now about half grown. Murfrecsboro Enquirer: On Tuesday night a handsome serenade was tendered Mrs, W. N. II. Smith, who is visiting friends in our town, by our young men, complimentary to her husband, a former citizen, having been .appointed Chief Justice of North Carolina. Tarboro Southerner: Cul. Mahson of the colored militia, says the New York Times reporter from Raleigh, lied. And now the question is agitating the masses: Whether the average Northern radical would not rather tell a lie on sixty days time, than tell the truth for cash. Durham Plant: On the 3rd of January Judge Laws sold a number of lots in the town of Durham. The lots arc located on Main street, in the extreme western part of town, and some of them sold at the rates of $900 per acre. From the enormous price these lots sold at there is no indication of hard times. .The same land fifteen years ago was slow sale on the market at 5 an acre. Greensboro Patriot : The time for filing claims against the stock-holders of the Bank ot Cape Fear, in the suit of Ter ry tt al vs Wilson, assisnee et al, expired by limitation on Saturday last. We are informed by Commissioner Staples that the claims, filed, including demanded in terest, will approximate three hundred thousand dollars. The report of the Com missioner will probably be filed at the April Term of the Circuit Court at this place. . ! . Charlotte Obsertcr: The Commissioner of Patents in Washington has declined the application of W. T. Black well & Co., of Purham, for a reopening of the case of McElwee vs. Blackwell, which case in volves the title to the brand of the Dur ham bull. The case had been previously made up and sent to Washington and then upon application reopened for the bearing of further testimony, and the commissioner now declines a second re opening for this purpose.
