We Rejoice in It.
A very large meeting was held in the
vestry room of the Temple of Israel on
Sunday last, which resulted in the selec
tion for the third term of the Rev. S.
Mendelsohn. We congratulate our Jewish
friends upon their determination of doing
justice tc-oue who is eminently fitted for
the position of minister and teacher. Dr.
Mendelsohn is a gentleman of culture,
and sheds a lustre upon the work and call
ing of his life. He is not alone popular
among his own flock, but has won for
himself a warm place in the hearts of the j
Christians of this CDmmunlty. Some
time ago we were creditably informed that j
Dr. Mendelsohn would not be a candidate
for re-election, but as his heart isith his
people, it is to be hoped he will accept the
place so unanimously tendered .him.

The South-Atlantic. r
The February number of this excellent
'Southern monthly has been laid on our
table. , T he table of contents is very at
tractive. Judge Cantwell opens the num
ber with an article on "Early Times in ILe
Carolinas," in the course of which he
proves very conclusively that Charleston
was first sett led by colonists from the an
cient colony of Old Town, iu Brunswick
county. Mrs. Jarvis gives U3 the third,
fourth and fifth chapters of "A Baptism of
Fire." A very hue poem contributed by
John'H. Boner, our' home poet, is entitled
'Where are the Pla:es that we. see in
Dreams?" Frof. B. F. Meek contributes
an entertaining aitlcle on "Poet's Lau
reate." Hampton's Campaign in South
Carolina" is handled by Mr. Edward J.
Maxwell.- Chapters 3 and 4, part 2, of
John Esteh Cooke's "Evelyn's Choice"
aro published. A. C. Gordon has a little
poem entitled "Ashes for Beauty," and
the editorial articles close' the number.
Published by Mrs. Cicero W. Harris, at
Wilmington, at $2 a year.
