Horrible Accident.
From a gentleman who left Fayetteville
yosterdav morning we learn of a horrible
accident which occurred, in that city ; the
day previous, 'resulting In the death of ari
old white man by the name of, Merrttt.
The accident' occurred within the town
imits and on the track of the Western
N. O.R. R- A timber trainv was being
backed down to the river and Mr. MerriU.
who was very deaf, was walking on the
traek at tbe time. ; The engineer saw him
but was unable to check the train in time.
The whistle was blown rapidTy and re-

was all in vain; he heard nothing and was
unconscious of the fate about to overtake
him. He was struck by the train and
crashed ; and mangled horribly, almost

by the name of Samuel Hays, a colored
man, who was tried before Justice James
