Johnson 'sj cooper works on Eagle Island, called on us yesterday and exhibited to us a specimen of his work. It was in the snap of a water bucket, made from juniper and red cedar and bound with brass hoops, that was so closely put together that it was difficult to find the various jointures. It w-aaavery pretty specimen of work and does much credit to Mr. Skipper's tastej aud ikill. Philip Phillips. I f i i As has been announced, Mrj Philip Phillips, the singing pilgrim, will give an Evening of Sacred S!ong at Front Street M. E. Church on Thursdiy evening, com mencing at S o'clock. Mr. Phillips is no stranger to the music lovers hi Wilming ton many'of whom have beiir heard I his exquisite notes. Hi charms all who! hear him and his ability to-furnish an evening of what may be cecded .religious enjoy ment is perhaps second t( that of no man living. Tickets may be I had at the book stores and we advise ail to. go and ijear him . i t j The Freedinan's Bank. , The commissioners of tha Fecdmau's Saving and Trust Company have given notice that they have declared a! diridend Of tea per cent, in deferoace to tlu desire expressed by many of thd depositors, the payments to commence March 20. The divided would have been larger but for the difficulty of selling real estate belong ing to the company. Of J3i pieces of p'roperty offered , at foreclosure sale the cbitfmissionera have been compelled to bay in for the benefit of depositors 1 17" pieces, scarcely any other bids than their own having been made at these sales. I Last Riut' Performance. ; Shakes nea re's comsdy "As You Like It", was prc.euted last night by the Fifth Avenue Combination Company of New York, under the management of Mr. Au- gustin Daly. MHfis Davenport as Rosa lind" was cbaruung,v- fam;matitig and in- terestincr. The nlay itselL. thouuh it shows much wholesome thought, aud con tains many wise sayings, which tender it so fascinating to the: reader, UtHt otiti'tu win admitibn when iWsr toil n : tin boards. This we think; a great disad vantage to one of Mits D.ivenportV fine qualities as an actress, and is also a great mistake, if we may m permitted to ven ture an opiniou per contra to this Queen o;f the Stage, in making such a selection. Miss Davenport is certainly. cutiUed to tho irreat renutatiou which .fhe his achieved and enjoys and iu our humble judgment she has not yet been surpassed, if equaled, by any appearance " on .this stage since the charming and accomplished Mrs. Glad stane . delighted a AVilmington auillence in ante-bellum days, j r Like all travelling stock companies the support to the principal characters was poor. Mr. Darryraore a Orlando conceived and acted his part well. Mr. Bainrridge as Adam was a success. Mr. Fisher as Jaqucs, wa so rapid in his ar ticulation that he could not be understood "half tho time. Mr. Bennett as Vr. Beau, in reciting the seven ages of man was not equal to Fleming, whom our citizens will recollect as one of Marcbant's troupe before the war. Upon tho whole we think if a better selected piece had been given, the audience would have been more delighted. ' Rather Uncouth. If the Fifth Avenue Combination Com pany ever visit Wilmiogton sgain under its present management, it would bo well for some, one interested in the matter to advise the manager', Mr. Daly, to leave his New York manners at home before he starts South, and substitute instead some thing more refined, especially when ho visits this locality. We are led to Take these remarks from having observed a little piece of rudeness, which was exhibi ted by this New Yorker last night, when he accosted a gentleman, who had a ! lady on each arm, as. he entered the theatre. The gentleman passed in aud seated his ladies but returned immediately, to dc mahd an explanation of the rude door keeper, when the man. ..with tho New York manners disclaimed any intention of offering ah insult. He was given to under stand, however, in plain, unvarnished English, that such conduct would not suit this climate; . - ! Report of Superintendent of Health From Dr. A. E. A new system of washing has lately been introduced in some French towns which is worthy of special I mention. Its economy is so great as to reduce the cost to the following figures: Five centimes (d.) for a pair of drawers: two and a half centimes i(d ) for each shirt, and so on. This is ; the . process : One kilo (two pounds) of soap is reduced-with little water to a sort of pap, which, having- been slightly warmed, is cooled in forty-five liters (ten gallons) of water, to which is added one spoonful of turpentine oil and twp spoonfuls of ammonia ; j then the mixture is agitated. The water is kept at a temperature which may be borne by the hand. In this solution the white clothes are put, and left there for two hours before washing them with soap taking care in the meantime to cover the tub. The solution may be warmed again and used once more, but it will be neces sary to add half a spoonful of turpen tine and another spoonful of ammonia Once washed with soap, ; the colors are put in warm water, and the blue is ap plied. This process, it is obvious, spares much time, much labor, and fuel, while it gives to the clothes a whiteness much superior to that obtained by any other method, and the destructive use of the wash-board or of pounding is not neces sary to clean tho clothes from the impur ities which they contain, i List of Letters.
