' ) 1st of February, 1878. ; A. II. VanBokkelen, Esq, Prenident of the Chamber of Commerce; Sib On Tuesday last, the 29tb tilt.. we made a visit to tbe public , works at, and near New Inlet, and now ask to re port, that since our report of the 20th of October i last (published 23d), 11,129 cu bic yards of stone have been placed in positioft by Messrs. BaDgs ' & Dolby, lag gregating 49,139 yards put in by theni up to the 1st of January, fully completing their contract. . . I During the fall bids for the delivery of $20,000 worth of i stone were advertised L&racd a contract for the same awarded Mr. W. U. French, ! ot Rocky Point, be being the lowest bidder, at a price below that being .paid Bangs & Dolby. Mr. French made his first delivery on the 11th of January, and up to this time has de livered 2,500 yards, which does not yet bring the breakwater to a standstill fully up to low water lines. There seems to be a constant shrinkage going on, owing, as you may; readily suppose, to a concentra tion of the currents of water upon it over one-half a mile wide and four to eight feet deen. in their efforts to get out of the inletj where this terrible pressure is intensified by the suspension of all dred ging operations for the. past eighteen months, thiis failing to enlarge the main outlet in the ratio or closing New Inlet, at which point and in the bay the water is ponded two or morel feet on the ebb tide. This state ot affairs, as a matter of course, must exercise a most damaging in fluence upon the work in hand, as also upon the old breakwater abd the line of beach connecting it with bmith s lsiana. The beach, stated in our last report as making up so handsomely in front of the ofd breakwater, has nearly all been washed away, exposing a large portion of, it, there being, free ingress and egress of water across it at half tide, through the break in it made by the April storm alluded to in a former report. The point ot beach I be yond has also been very much abraided, and presents a dangerous appearance. , The two slues, alluded to in former re- nnro oVwrtf hnlF a miln anart. anirl ahont. three mil2s from New Inlet, h ivc enlarge! ticcs our last report, and joined at high tide, covering entirely the middle- ground between, exposing and opening over half a mile in width, and presenting a very for midable appearance. i The Assistant Engineer (Mr. Bacon) seems to regard this oponing as not j of a dangerous character.
