It was a.pleaaj ant little party and we doubt not that there wai a good time all round, especially as the dram has to be passed both going and -re turning. Services at the First Presbyterian Church. '" The Rev. Dr.1 Wilson. Pastor- of the First Presbyterian Church in this city, preached last night to a large congrega tion upon the existence of a future punish ment. To any one who glanced in upon this large assembly last night it must have been evideut that the topic chosen for the evening's diocourso was oos of deep interest to people of all classes and creeds in this comtnuuity. Presbyterians were there and Baptists were there, Meth odists were there and Episcopalians were there, and UtAnan Catholics and Israelites; the regular devout church-gceT and the semi-occasionals, now and then attendant were there also. There were there those who feign to believe there is nohell, no future punishmeut, and some were there also of whomi it is said that they doubt the very existence of a Deity, and others who disbelieve in the Trinity; rich and poor, high and low, the Jew and the Gentile wero all assembled together as they will be ou the last great dayi The reverend gentleman took his text from i the 46th verse of the 25th chapter of St. Matthew: ! "And these shall go away iuto ever lasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal," 1 We would like "very much for the benefit of our readers who were not present to furnish a synopsis of the sermon, but without notes we shall not attempt it for fear of doing this learned divine injustice. Suffice it I to - say, that those who I were of the opinion that there is ( no future state of punishment- and went to listen to this profound and scholarly ireacher open to conviction if they were not con vinced before leaving the church that there is a place of punishment hereafter, then we undertake to say that their feelings must at least have been decidedly un comfortable.! ' Criminal Court. The Criminal Cour; of 'New Hanover county, His Honor, Judge Meares, pre siding, convened this, morning at 10 o'clock. I The following named persons were j drawn to bbrve upon the iGran'd Jury foj this term of the Court, : viz Jno. H. Allen, Foreman, G. J. Boney, Nathan Noyes, II. B. Freeman, Henry Lemmermanj John Moseley, Primus Aycock, II. A. Burr, Chas. II. Robinson, Thomas Moore, William Moseley, Wra. M. Collins, Henry Nutt, G. M. Altaffer, Edward S. Ennett, Wra. Marsteller, JasJ B. Huggins, Chas. Tietgen. y The Judce then delivered bis chargejto the Grand Jury, after which several un important cases were disposed of, among them one or two' cases for assault and battery, which ; were submitted. ; A ci fa against the Sheriff of Brunswick county was dismissed at defendant's cost. This constitutes the proceedings for the day up to the time of our going to press. A Good Idea. 'I We learn that Messrs. Gregory & Free man, proprietors of the Humphrey House, in Goldsboro, have decided upon changing the name of that hotel' which will here after be known as the Gregory House, in compliment to the venerable Richard J. Gregory, the senior of the firm ; and the oldest hotelist iu the State. We think the change a good one as much because of the popularity of Mr. Gregory with travelers as of the unpopularity of Col. Humphrey with the politicians. The house is an excellent one and as long as Mr. Freeman, the junior partner, is at the wheel, it will remain second to none in the State. A New chapel. Christian. Chapel, the coldred M. E. Church on the conor 1 of Church and Seventh street wkh was destroyed by fire a few weeksjigps; is being rapidly re built. The old church was of wood, but the new structure is to be of brick. The walls are already about eleven feet above the ground and are rapidly getting higher. It promises to bo a very hand some little edifice when completed and an ornament to that section of the city. The building committee have thus far shown a very commendable energy and persever ancc. . ' Red Ants. Wet a sponge with water in which sorre sugar has been dissolved.; squeeze the sponge as dry as possible, saving the tngar water,- and set the sponge where the ants infest. It will soon ba full, of them. Dip it in scalding Water, which will kill the ants. Dip it again in the sugar and water and set it. You will soon catch all the ants and destroy them. Review. i , The Up-Country. MoobESViLE, Iredell County, N. C, February 7th, 1S7S. Mb. Editob : . 1 As some of, the readers of your sprightly Review, who know nothing of this secy uon, migni wisn to hear irom our miiy country, I wil attempt to give them an laeaor Mooresville, though I feel my in ability to do so in a comprehensive man ner. -1. i It is a pleasant little village, or I might say cityi as it has a Mavor and a "Board of Uouucil, situated in Iredell county, on the A., T. & O. K. K., about31 nrles from Charlotte) and 17 from Statesville. Lying (Meetly oh the healthy ridge I of North Carolina, surrotinded on all sides by beu- Tul h;rs, rendering it a most picturesque spot, and though it numbers now about seven or eight hundred inhabitants, it is but hve years old, there having been iu ltsU nut one cab n here besides the K. K warehouses. Eba founder, Mr. J. F. Moore, who lived a mile or two West of here, moved here about Jannary, 1873, and was soon followed by others, s ce which time it has constantly grown, r id even now sev eral houses are in course of erection. Near here is a solitary grave, which exhibits the mortuary statistics of ths place durinc its existence, and beneath that mound rest the remains of Mr. Mcore. the first settler here, who died not. irom local disease, as his size will prove, he having died lasjt July, in his 53rd year, and weighing just prior to his death 320 ponnds. i3raiu dis ease did its Work, and th' noble specimen vi uiauuuuu wri lam low in ueaui. xvery aay I see and converse with men in ap pearance 40 or 50 years old, yet who have uvea in this belt of country 60 or 70years, ana wno to-day can do as good a day's work as any ordinary man of 25 years, i ine ra"road in through the centre ot the place, and the train passes twice a dav. breaking the monotonv of villas life. Wp. have alfine academy where a thorough course of English snd the classics are taught and one primary school, in which the young are prepared for entrance into the academy. i . .Near the centre of the place stands the Presbyterian church, which, by the way, is a nandsome building, capable oi seating about five hundred persons,! which is pre- siaea over by Kev. Mr. rernck, an aflable, fluent and able Divine. , A Methodist church is in course of erection and will be completed by June or July next, and of sufficient dimensions tq con veniently accommodate three hundred per sons, f Rev. T. L. Triplett is the Methodist shepherd at Moo esville, and is very popu lar with the pet pie .collectively for his ability is only .exceeded bv, Lis christian humility. " ' ' h Both congregations now worship m the Presbyterian churc'i, exhibiting a true christen spirit. . I he atmosphere hi re is not humid as in Wilmington, but pure, light and volatile, buoyant and strengthening to the lungs, hence is an excellent resort for consump tives. We have a fine hotel aud several stores, and ah branches of business wdl represented, except liquor business, to which exception no doubt mnch of the morality of the place depends. By an act of the Legislature, the sale of spiritu ous liquois within two miles of here is prohibited. There is also quite a cotton market, there having been upwaidsof 2,- 000 bales of cotton sold here during the past year. The people, as a whole, are refined, pious, intelligent and hospitable to a fault. None of the selfishness usually ascribed to Western North Carolina is perceptible here. ( If a man so far forgets himself as to be boisterous in profanity oriobeenity, he is immediately arrested and jugged for 24 hours in the calaboose, so you see the ne cessity of holding one's temper and keep ing sober. , Just two miles from here is located the justly celebrated Creswell Chalybeate Springs, to which many invalids resort during the summer months. As I hear the whistle of the coming rain, I hurriedly close for t4? present. 1 ':'-.. F. The Thermometer.
