Cuey. I Alderman Bowden requests us to say that he is incorrectly reported in yester day issue of tha llEViEw, as having voted for Mr. W. l Oldham on the second ballot for Alderman from the Fourth Ward. Mr, Bowden states that he cast but one vote for Mr. Oldham, and that was on the first ballot, and that at each Bub:quentH ballot, he voted for Mr. C. II. U bin on. We make the correction with pleasure. It seems that we placed Alderman Myers where we should have put Alderman Bowden and vice versa. ( ir In publishing the votes polled by the Board of Aldermen at their meeting on Tuesday evening, the 12th inst., we unio tentionally omitted to record- Alderman Foster in the second ballot for Alderman from the Fourth Ward as voting for Mr. Ividder, and likewise. Aldermau King on the first ballot for Mayor as voting for Alderman Foster. These errors were .t entirely unintentional, and accidential, for we beg to assure the Aldermen from the First and Fifth Wards, that we had them recorded as above in our original man us cript, and the mistake lies between our self and the priuter, and no where else We beg to assure the Aldermen, also that there was no slight intended and we promise most faithfully, that such a mis take shall not occur again. Swear not Falsely. 1 The conviction of Ben Brown, for perjury, in the Criminal Court now in session, should be a warning to those o our colored population who place so little value upon their oaths. It is, we fear too true that a great number of the colored population of this city have no more resrard for their oath than a Chinaman, and of late the charge of per jury has been brought against many o our colored citizens, vyitnsucn promis cuous swearing as has been indulged in by some of the colored population, the ife.or liberty of a respectable man is hardly worth the toss qa peonyj There was another "flash in the pan 'or Coroner Hewlett yesterday afternooc As April is over one and a half months off yet we think it is rather early to inau gurate such jokes.. , T . C.4I The Great Comedian. Sotbern the comedian of natural re putation, and who is noted for getting off a sell on his audience, will show here in his great characters of the "Crushed Tragedian" and "Lord Dundreary" on the 19th and 20th instl Mr. Sotbern is a comediari of well earned reputation and should draw good houses, though we think he has made a great mistake in placing his price of admission above the reach of "common people." The. New York Telyraph, in speaking of Mr. Soth- ern's performance of the Crushed Trage dian in that city recently, says: Nothing wittier than the words of Mr. Byron's play has Been heard for a very long time, andnoth ing funnier than Mr. Sothern's burlesque of a broken-down actor has ever been seen. In answer to many inquires , we v 1 J1 : ll 1 ar r-v.i V uuiu ray mat mr. oomcrn aoes not, in the slightest manner, follow either the conception, manner or business of Mr. Byron, the actor, author and original of the character. He plays it from an en tirely different standpoint. His Fitzilt- mont is by no means so reconcilable to nature as Uyron's but it is much funnier. Byron does not picture Fitzallmont ,as a seedy middle-aged man, who has been a long time on the stage. He makes him a comparatively young man with ridiculously, ambitious, aspirations, long ing for the chance of a brilliant opening, and believing the' whole world to be in a conspiracy to crush him.- The fact that he afterward makes him a comic singer and a successful one at that, a callinsr which demands liveliness instead of lugu b.riousness, shows how much more right he is in his conception than is Mr. Soth- ern. But the latter gentleman fairly dis- arms criticism by the originality and comicality of bis creation, and all the spectator can do is to lay back and laugh. Every sentence in the piece contains a tmism nnA a wirf.,VJm the actor excites the risibilities, and the iun is of so genuine and irresistible a na ture that even the redundancy of its con tinuance through four acts dees not pall on the teste, but leaves tb hearer more inclined to laugh' than ever. Mr. Geo Holland, who is a new comer here, dis tinguishes himself by a remarkably neat, original and clever creation of an eccentric character part, that of Capt. Backett, an ancient, amorous and deaf roue, who en J J W W 4 joys the hospitalities of Miss McunicashH, and lends himself to her schemes. For the Review. Burgaw, N. C, 13th Feb. 1878. Mr. Editor : With each day comes stronger evidences and brighter prospects for Burgaw. The citizens of the county have determined to erect here an acadt- myof learning. A meeting in the inter- est of education was held here os the first Monday inl this month, and a committee appointed to ascertain, as far as possible, the views of the people touching the mat ter of building an Academy, and to solicit subscriptions for the same. This com mittee will meet hero on the first Monday in March to elect trustees for, the school.. The place is growing in wealth and popu lation.' Ssveral new! buildings have re cently gone . up and others are in course of erection. Here we have several stores, all of which seem to be doing good business. This speaks much for the place as a business point. Here, too, we have a hotel under the management pf that noble hearted, enter prising and Christian gentleman, A. H. Williams, Esq., who knows exactly how to take care of his guest, and knowing, does not fail to do so. i YVejalso have a bunday bchool, which, though in its infancy,- is in a prosperous 3 a " 1 1 : : a l I auu uuunsuiug couuiuon. ; jxi, do very distant dav we hone to have hero a Sun- day School second to none in the county. On last Sunday night we had the pleasure of listening to the Rev. W. M. Kennedy who, in his usual powerful, im pressive and oratorical manner! addressed the Sunday School here. .His argument was masterly, showing the thought and wisdom of the speaker.' On the following day and to a large and attentive audience he preached tho funeral ot the late Samuel Highsmith of this place. The sermon was powerful and impressive, and we have reason to hope that great good was done. We are glad to know that this man of God has consented to preach to us again on the night of the second Sunday in March next. , C. Oak woodwas teJing from flats yeser- day at 00c per load.
