C , THURSDAY, FEBRUARY The Richmond Military En Route for Charleston, 8. C- j Between 9 and 10 o'clock this morning it became generally known that a Rich mond (Va.) company of citizen soldiery would pass through this city en route for Charleston, S." C, where they go, in re sponse to an: invitation, to participate in the grand demonstrations to be held to morrow in honor of the birthday of him who was "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen. Upon the arrival of the train a company of as fine looking men as it has been our pleasure to st'e in shj&v! time nast, filed out of the car and marched across the platform to the car which will convey them to Charleston. The company proved to be the Walker Light Guard, Company B, of the First Virginia Regiment, com manded by Capt. Chas. T. Binford. j The company numbers 45 men, rank and file, and were well equipped. Their arms are the same as those used by our volunteer companies and their knapsacks are the reg ular United States regulation. The Guards are accompanied by Voelker's brass band and the following members of the regi mental acaff: polonel Bradley T. Johnson, Major Charles J. Anderson, Adjutant Jo. Jane Stern , Captain Cyrus Bossiex, and Dr Judsou B. Wood, and by the following gentlemen and ladies; General William H. F. Lee, General fl. U. Heth, Rev. H. Melville- Jackson, General T. M. Logan James Patton, JohnT. Stovall, Mrs Brad ley T Johson, Mrs. P. H. Aylett, Mr. John Enders, Jr., Mrs. Blunt Mason, and Misses Nannie Leary, Lafor.d Palmer,Lou Barksdale, and Page Aylett. Mr. Jno. Werner, formerly of Rich mond, but latterly of Wilmington, who has many acquaintances among the trav eling 'military and the musicians accom panying them, conceived a happy idea yesterday which he carried into execu tion this morning, to witi he greeted his old acquaintances at the depot this morn ing with two kegs of good lager beer and they all did drink to the good old days of "Auld Lang Syne. Voelker's band played a couple ot lively airs and tho boys rallied around the beer. , Yesterday Gen. B. T. Johnsou received the following dispatch from Gov. Vance: I 'fYou have my permission to pass through the State. Be virtuous and you will be happy, but will not have sc much fun." ; To which Gen. Johnson replied from this city this morning: ' j"Have taken youfadvice and been de corous, but dull, virtuous and happy. What message shall I take from the Governor of North Carolina to the Gover nor of South Carolina ? It is a long time between, &c. j Bradley 1. Johnson, Col. First Virginia Regiment. The train rolled out of the depot on schedule time, all hands seeming to, have enjoyed their stay of twenty minutes on the cliff above the river. The Robesonlan and the Daily Papers Brother McDiarmid of the Robesonian, insumming up the list of dailies throughout the State, the has following kind words to say for all. The people of North Caroliba are justly proud of their daily papers; and wo sup pose that no cities of the same size any where in the South can boast of their equal. In Wilmington we have the Star one of the most enterprisiing and best newspapers that comes to our office. It is admirablo edited, well printed, and has every appearance of thrift and vigor. The Kkview, tne only evening paper in we State, is owned and edited by one of the most enterprising and clevermen in North Carolina, and is 1 able, sprightly, and as sound as the silver dollar, for which there is, just now, such a clamor. TheChaTlotte Observer is also an excel lent' paper; it is ably edited and has one of the best local editors in the State. The Raleigh Observer is very ably edited, superbly printed and has an excellent local editor, but its corps of regular con tributors is so large that the quantity of local and State news is necessarily smaller than it would otherwise be. It furnishes, perhaps, more . reading matter than the others and has some excellent correspon dents, especially its N. Y. correspondent, "H.' But the Observer it a power in the political arena, and is generally so re garded. The Raleigh News is able, enter priging and newsy and is the largest and cheapest daidy in the State. The News has a splendid record. We make our bow to the editor of the Robesonian for his kindly mention of . the Review and its Editor. We. trust that the Robesonian m yet live to become a daily, i. e. if the present Editor and Pro prietor so desires it, and that brother Mac may survive to see it and reap the bene fit if there is any. Captain Tiltoa, of theschr. B. M. Til ten, reports seven feet of water on the ob structions at New Inlet yesterday. OPERA HOUSE. Sothern in hiiJCharacter of The Cruihed Tragedian. Quite an appreciative audience sssem bled last night at the Opera Housd to wit ness Mr. Sothern's "performance of h:'i really great character of the Crashed Tra gedian. We say great character, because this talented Comedian has made the char acter of De Lacy Fitzaltauiont one worth seeing and hearing, has thrown life into it, and made byis'impersonation of the part, an odd and uninteresting character, one full of ipterest and .humor o his audience' vbkb excites t$iUudits of all dramatic critics. One objection to the play may be found in the fact that there is not enough of Fitzaltamont, Tragedian of the Snaggelton Circuit. j Mr. George Hollaad as Captoin Rack ett ef the "Rhinoceros Irregulars'' we thought particularly happy in his part and afforded almost as much amusement as the irrepressible Fitzaltamont. Miss Agnes Proctor as Florence Bristowe we think deserves especial mention for her admirable performance of the char acter she assumed. Mr. Lacy as Ernest Glendenning was'. passable. Mrs. Geo. F. DeVere as Miss Mountcashel sustained her part well. Taken as a whole, we think the Company the best we have seen this season. ! Mr. Sothern was repeatedly called out during the evening between the acts. The Troupe left this morning on the Southern bound train for Charleston, where they are expected to open an en gagement to-night. Stockholders Meeting. The annual meeting of the Stockholders of the Bank of New Hanover was held at their Banking House in this city to-day at 11 o'clock a. m. Mr. William Calder was called to the chair and Mr. W. II. Green was made Secretary. Six thou sand three hundred and seven shares of stock were represented, being a majority of the capital stock. After the report of the President and Director's was made, an election was bad for Director's for the ;en suing year which resulted in the' election of the old Board as follows : John Dawson, D. R.
