The Grand Central Ildtel, New . York, has long been a favorite with Southern people. Now that the St.j Nicholas is soon to close, it is presumed that the urana uentrai win ausoro m siui larger .proportion of the Southern trade. Incendiarism and Robbery. We learn from a gentleman just from Raleigh that a conflagration (an account of which is elsewhere published in the Review,) took place in that city it half past two o'clock this morning, and a little colored child about five years old is sup posed to have perished in the flames. At the same time thaf everybody's attention was directed to the burning building, a bold robbery was committed in another part of the city. The store of Messrs, W. C. & A. B. Strpnach was broken open and several hundred dollars worth of goods stolen therefrom. The natural inference is that the inceudiaries and robbers be long to the same gang. I City Court His Honor Mayor Fishblate disposed of five cases this morning. The first case called was that of Fred Dunn charged witli disorderly conduct, His Honor- said $10 or 10 days in the city prison. Sam Kornegay for trying to rescue a prisoner from the hands of a policemaij was fined $10 or 10 days imprisonment. Angle Faushchrrged with being drunk aid disorderly had a similar sentence. James Edward Walker, (col.,) for dis orderly conduct was fined $5 or 4 days in prison. ! ' William Myers (col.,) for disorderly Conduct and resisting a police officer re ceived a similar sentence. Dead Infant. Coroner Hewlett impanneled a jury yes- tefday to hold an inquest over the body cf a colored - infant that was picked up on Saturday night between 9 and 10 o'clock, near the eastern end of Princess street. The child was alive when first discovered, but lived only a few hours after" it was taken up and cared fbr, and dh?d on Sun- day morning before daylight. The Coroner was notified early yesterday morning. The vei diet of the jury was that the deceased came j o its death from the inhuman treatment of its mother. Owing to the fact that to all j appearances the child was but a few1 houis old, the'sup twsition is that it was cast aside to shield a child sHion i its mother from exposure to the world. Coroner Hewlett has detectives on the lookout for the unnatural mother and it is to be hoped that she may be found, 'ex posed and punished to the extent of the law. . Death of Captain Woodson. It is with sincere regret and profound sorrow that we learn from the Raleigh Observer of Sunday 's issue of the death of its City Editor Captain E. C. Woodson. A more genial, whole-souled, kind-hearted fellow, does not belong to the fraternity. May his rest be peace. I The following extract we clip from the editorat colums of the Observer: I. In 1868, he became Editor of the War rentonN. C. Gazette; in 1869, he came Raleigh with Capt. Samuel T. Wil liams and Messrs. Stone & Uzzell and es ,tabliphed the Raleigh News, of which he was City Editor ; in 1874 he was Editor of the Wilson Advance; ini 1876, he es tablished the Wilson Evpress; and in March, 1877, he became City Editor of the Observer. When the forms ot the Observer went to press on last Sunday j morning he went to his bed. The Observer of to-morrow (Sunday) morning will contain his funeral notice. i ' He was a man known to everybody and knowing everybody. He had ill-will to nonfe. It is probable that , in all the world there is no man, woman, or child who I had other than kindly fee ings for him. He was .brave,1 loyal, gentle and affectionate. Ho had faults, but they were faults incidental to such a nature. Men pardoned them, and if so we can hope that they will hnd p.ardon ot his Mauer. Homeward Bound. ' Yesterday morning the Walker Guards of Richmond, passed through this city, from Charleston, S. C, en route for home, Of the gentlemen who accompanied the Guards to Charleston, Gen's. , W. U. F Lee and II. H. Heth were the I chly ones who returned witb; them ; the remainder of the gentlemen and the ladies stayed in Cearleston until last evening. Some major" ity of the officers of the Wilmington Compa nies, together with Gen- Tayior's and Maj. Flanners staff, I met the Guards t the depot, when Gen. Taylor, on behalf of the Wilmington citizen soldiery, extended them a welcome iu a neat little speech. Capt Binford replied in behalf of the Guards. and proposed three cheers, for the soldiery of Wilmington and ther Old North Stale, whih were given, in a style we imagine, peculiar to the Guards. The ranks were then broken, and "cockiiils" were indulg ed in for about half an hour, after which the train moved off, amid three cheers for the homeward bound military. j , There will be a grand Cantata and Tab. leaux given at the City Hall on to-morrow (Tuesday) evening, the 26th instn lor the benefit of -St. Stephen's A. Mf E. Church. C, MONDAY, FEBRUARY j For the Review Yabbobo House, Raleigh, N. C. 1 . Februtry 22nd, 1878. Deab Review: There is much at our Capitol to afford the visitor entertain ment during his moments of leisure. The Asylums, with their unfortunate inmates, are pleasant to visit from the many carious sight and scenes that meet the eye. These institutions ap pear to be conducted in a becoming way, affording as much : comfort as pos sible to the unfortunate inmates. The Insane is now crowded, and Xjfear trill remain so? as only ! about oiie fourth of the patients sent there on an average aro cured. There are about one hun dred and twenty pupils at (the asylum for the deaf, dumb and the blind, and its agreeable principal informs us that he can take many more.! Indeed, he thinks cf recommending to the Legis lature the propriety of compelling pa rents to send their unfortunate chiK dren to the Asylum. Here they are individually cared for, taught to read write and learn some useful employ ment. The State pays all expenses of the pupils in this Asylum except cloth ing, which must bo paid for by the county. Both Asylums are elegant buildings, and are ornaments to Ral eigh and the pride of our State, j The walls and buildings of the Peni tentiary are being rapidly constructed. They are of, granite, taken from the quarry within the penitentiary; The whole structure is expensive, magnificent and grand in its proportions' About three hundred convicts are within, the walls, including ten women, the remainder are on the Western railroads. Our State Officials, all of them, are ex ceedingly clever gentlemen, as a visit to their respective offices will show. They are agreeable, patient and try to please and entertain their visitors, i And by the way, our friends in Pender and Duplin may certainly expect the canal through Angola bay to be commenced very soon. True, the bill authorizing its construction is awfully deficient and utterly j fails to meet the occasion making no provisions for the purchase of tools, carts, &c, yet Gov. Vance says he is going to send the convicts to Croom's bridge certain, "if they do nothing but kill suakes and throw mud at each other." ! The Supreme Court is y et ' in session, and disposing of the cases as rapidly as the contentious tendencies of the lawyers will admiC T notice in attendance from your section Hons. E. Captwell, D. L. Russell and A. T. London, Esq., from Wilmington, Messrs. Allen, Stallings and Kornegay, from Duplin, Mr. Bruce Wil liams, from Pender, and John D. Kerr, Esq., from Goldsboro. Our new Chief Justice gives universal satisfaction. He is a high-toned gentleman, and an able lawyer. The other members of tho Su preme Bench are; too, men of ability, and we think North Carolina can boast of as able a Supreme Court as perhaps any State m the Union. ; -W. Struck, by Lightning. From Mr. J. B. Warnet, who lives a few miles from North West we learn that a house situated two miles from North West depot on the C. C. Railway, and occupied by Noah Walker, colored, wa9 struck by lightening Thursday evening. The chimney was slightly . damaged but beyond this there was nothing injured. It will be remembered that on Thursday night a slight thunder storm accompanied by lightning passed over this city, but we did not expect to learn of any damages from it I Hotel Arrivals.
