" lj - 1 I WILMINGTON, N. C When a wife remonstrated with her b!usband for staying out late at night, he retorted: You got me in the way of it. Before we were married you used to i throw your arms j round my neck at three o'clock, and say, "Don't' go, dar ling; it is early yet;" but now if I hap- hpn Ktav mit till two it is a terribl affair. We understand that the Committee on 'olice, with the approval of the Board of Aldermen and of Audit and Finance, have anrn-rAaA i.a nntrnpf fnr rv-k1irA uniforms to Mr. A. David, his bid having been the lowest for the style adopted. The new uniforms are to be of the standard West Point Cadet g:ey clotb, instead of: bluei as heretofore, with the coat doubh breasted Telephonic Communication. . Wilmington is to have a telephone. The office of Capt. A. Di Cazaux. foot of Chestnut street, and those of the" C. ?. R. W.. on tbo third floor of -r m he - New Hanover Bank building, are to be connected. The connection is ;o be made on. the telegraphic wires 'and the instruments are to arrive in a day or two I , The Market House. Work on the Market House hasv been finally completed and the improvement is a marked one. There are ten gas amps in position, extending the entire ength of the building. The color dow is light blue and the suggestion of clean- iness presented to the eye is a comforta ble one. The entire cost was ia the neighborhood of $200. 'Revenue Note. The Treasury Department has issued a circular of regulations concerning internal revenue guagers' fees and 'expenses. No guager is allowed to accept any'compen- sation other than that prescribed and paid by United States authority nor per mitted to become interested in any tobac co, cigar or liquor business. I i . . 1 ' Astronomical. The transit of, Mercury, which is to occur the 6th of May, will be visible all over the United States, and seven hours and a half will bo be consumed in the i. . ... . passage. Astronomers are anticipating the event with great anxiety and interest, "or it is hoped that it will i throw light upon the question ; as j to whether there is an interior planet to Mercury, and also determine the orbit of the latter definitely. A Telephone Fire Alarm. The Norfolk Virginian says that the Bell Telephone Cornny of Boston, Mass., have made a proposition to inaugurate the telephone fire alarm .system in Nor folk for the sum of $900. The company agrees to furnish fifteen stations to be placed in such localities as are deemed most convenient. There may be some thing in this to commend itself to the attention of the authorities of this city. Sol. Bear & Bros. Mr. Sol. Bear has returned from his regu- lir Spring visit to the Northern markets, and the entire force in the establishment of Messrs. Bear & Bros., is now at work un packing, ticketing and displaying the new goods. Mr. Bear bought largely and every floor in the two buildings ,is now full of goods. His purchases of clothing for the retail trade, were unusually large, and in this line the house can display one of the most oxtensive stocks in the State. The senior member of the firm will hereafter give his exclusive personal attention to the reatil department. 1 Another Postal Item.. i.i The House Committee considering pos tal matters have agreed on their bill classi fying mail matter. It makes some im portant changes in the interest of cheap rates on i mail matter. Drop letters are continued at two cents, but the advantages for the public and newspaper publishers will be found in the rates on printed mat ter, which have been reduced to the sys tem ot two cents per pound on paper all around, instead of the old two cents and three cents, according to the quality of matter. It was also determined to provide that papers can be sent as samples by publishers at the regular ' rates. The bill will be reported at an early day. t . ... ' -t "--v." ' ,f -; v. - . I The trial ot Sam Robinson, colored, for the murder of Lewis Davis, also colored, i - which occurred in this city s rne weeks ago, a report of which was duly published by us at the time, has been in progress in the Criminal Court to-day before Ii is Honor, Judge Mearcs. The Court Room has been thronged throughout the entire day, the colored element being decidedly in the ascendancy. The case was con ducted for the State by Mr. Solicitor Moore and Messrs Jno. D. Bellamy, Jr., and Frank; H. Darby appear for the de fence.1 The jfollowing compose tire jury, viz : j . ' 1 j Lewis Chapman, Ilemy Grceli, James B. Allen, G. W. Green, Ellis Patrick, John S. McEachern, A. II. Morris, Eobsit D. Davis, G. R. Ward, R. R. Sullivan, T. S. Wilkins, Richard Jones. ' A verdict in the case had ' not been reached when we went to press 1 j For the Review. The Murder case. Lumberton, N. C, Aprir4tht 1878. Dear Review: ! The case of Ben McAlister .who was charged with the murder of Mr. Benjamin Smith in this town on the 16th of October, 1873 while "The Great Eastern Circus" was performing here, was the all absorb ing theme of conversation for several day s before the trial. The special venire ,of sixty men ordered for the trial was pret ty well picked over before a jury was drawn which suited the counsel for the prosecution and defense. About four hours were taked up in the examination of witnesses, who passed through a scorch ing cross examination. McAlister's only defense was in trying to prove an alibi and had a former employee, of Fayette ville, brought into court, who swore the' prisoner was not in Lumberton at the time of the murder but with him in Fayetteville performing the duties of a domestic.1 Upon the cross examination the witness stated that often the prisoner would leave his home and be gone for two or three weeks and during these little ex cursions of Ben's he' did not know where he was, and was unable to state that the prisoner was not in Lumberton on the day of the murder. r Solicitor Norment led off in an able ar gument reviewing the evidence in a forci ble manner and was followed by Mr. Al fred Roland for the defence. At the close of Mr. Roland's argument the case was guen to t,he Jury under His Honor Judge Eure's charg3. The evidence in the case would have justified ihe jury iu bringing in a veidtct of not guilty, ncai slaughter or murder, and there was much guessingjand prophecying as to the the! ver dict. About 11 o'clock p. m'., the jury brought ia a verdict j of manslaughter. This morning the ' prisoner was again brought into court and the Judge passed sentence, giving him ten years in the pen. I was shown through the new jail this mornirg by Mr. Pittman, ihe jailor. Th3 building is substantial, and is comfortable and well ventilated, iu fact, it is one or the nicest buildings cf its kind in the fctate. John Lochlear, one of the Lowrey gang, has be3n outlawed by Judge Euro and it is very likely that Lochlear will be killed or captured by tne scuuietonians, as ne is veiy much disliked by most of them. II. ' Consumutlon Cured. An old physician, retired from practice, having had placed in his hands by an East India missionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy, for the speedy and permanent cure of consumption, bronchitis, catarrh, asthma, and all throat and lung affections, also a positive and radical cure for nervous debility and all nervous complaints, after having tested its wonderful curative powers in thous ands of cases, has felt it his duty to make it known to bis suffering fellows. 'Ac tuated by this motive, and a desire to re lieve human suffering, I will send, free of charge, to all who desire it, this recipe in German, French, or English, with full directions for preparing and using.
