Fickle April Thefe is an old superstition that there is generally no real summer weather unti Whitsuntide, which fallsjthis year on the 9th of June, but if this is to be true 1878 will rank as an off year as it was decid edly and unmistakably warm enough yes terday for Summer clothes, although the atmosphere hereabouts early this morn- i ing was cool enough for blankets and overcoats. To day has been one of the loveliest fickle April has in its calendar The Burgaw Meeting. The communication below showfe that the people of Onslow are alive to the1 benefit ol the proposed Railroad from Burgaw down into Onslow county. The proposition to Pender surely will arouse the people of that county to bestir them selves and to take wise action in the very beginning of this project. There is no county !in the state more entitled to rail road advantages than Onslow. We hear from different sections in Pender and Ons low that there will be a large crowd and a big time at Burgaw on Wednesday the unu ui may. luvi ma people turn out. Excellent speakers are invited and fine speaking may be expected in behalf of the proposed railroad and the cause of' education and material improvement. Pender and Onslow are both I rural counties and are not only joined geographically but are in close alliance in sympathy and interest. Let them also be united by the iron bands of a railroad. We expect to meet many Pender and Onslow friends at Burgaw op the 1st of May. We learn that quits ! a number from pur own city are arranging to go up to the meeting, and to spend the gala-day at the new and coming town of Burgaw. The Wilmington and Woldon Railroad will have one or more represen tatives at the meeting, and is . ot course warmly in favor of the proposed plan of developing the splendid resources of Ons low. Read the communication here with. I 1 Jacksonville, April 11th, '78. Editor Review ; Dear Sir ; Wc take this occasion to - sav that there is no more welcome visitor to our county than the staunch old Wil mington Journal, now so ably edited by you. IPe democracy ot unslow were always fond of it, and never moro so than now.! It has great influence here. We arc beginning to be stirred up on he railroad scheme to connect Onslow and Pender at the new county site of the new county. Our people are in favor of it. They regard it as feasible, practical, and much needed. It would double the value of our lands and give us a fine out- et for our surplus products. You are aware that our lands are j fertile and cheap. We hope the meeting to be held at Burgaw first of May will prove a success. Onslow sends i cordial greetings to- Pender and a readiness to do a full share in substantial subscriptions to the railroad. The other surrounding counties should also subscribe and doubt less will. . The enterprise meets with warm favor in all parts of Onslow. Let a suita ble charter be obtained frorn the next Legislature, after the first and foremost step to all, a survey. Public meetings will, of course, be held, as the yar ad vances, and suitable working committees inaugurated. Of course we shall insist, as a right, upon at least two hundred con victs from the next Legislature,to build the road. We shall be the more persistent in this application, because the East fur nishes at least two-thirds , of the convicts now upon' the public work in the Western part of the State, and receives no benefit. It is time to j claim and to have our own convicts upon our own local pub lic works lor a few years, at least. From the "Tabulated statement of In dustries and Resources of iXorth Caro Una," issued by the iVgricultural Depart ment, we gather the following as tot the number of churches in the State. I The Methodists lead off with 1,177, the Bap tists next, with 1.1G7, then Presbyterians 196, Episcopalians 00, Lutherans 70 German Reformed 30, Christian 24, Quakers 20. Catholics 9, Campbell ites 5 Union 3,Dunkers 3 . Total 2,800. 1 The New Dollars. The change that has been made in the coinage of the newi silver dollar 'very much improves its appearance, i The muchly abused eagle is still i there, but be low the general surface of the coin. The Goddess of Liberty's head on the other side has also been depressed, to prevent constant friction and wearing away. The newer coins are "made convenient in one important respect. They can now be piled upon one another without toppling over, as was the case with the first issue" . - - i i They are also of finer finish and smoother appearance than those first turned out of the mint. I I- ' : .'''! By the exercise of the most judicious management, the Grant Central Hotel, New York, has very cleverly turned the tide of trade in its direction, not less by the sweeping reduction of its rates than through its excellent management. Hitherto the two offices have been one and Bishop Gibbons, up to the time of his acceptance of the archbishopric of Baltimore, admin istered both. They have, however, been disconnected, and the vic3r apcstolic of this diocese is yet to be appointed unless, indeed, Father Janssens, of Richmond, who was appointed to succeed Bi.shop Gibbons temporarily, shall hold Over in the charge of ' this diocese.
