WILMINGTON, N. C., MONDAY, MAY Democratic County ConYentlon, Wilmington, N. C, May 4th, 18 8. Pursuant to the call of the County Ex ecutive Committee, the delegates appoint ed by various Wards and Townships of the city and countv met in the Court House at Wilmington. N. C. this after- noon at 3 o'clock, and the ineetmjr 1 was called to order by C II Robinson, Chair- manrof the County Executive Committee, who was about to read the list of dele gates, when I Col Roger Moore objected to the list being read until a temporary organization was effected as it was likely that Mr. Robinson would be called upon "to decide in one or two cases contesting delegations, but finally- withdrew bis ob- jections under protest. Ma-j C M Stedman, by invitation of Col Roger Moore, then addressed the Con- vention, when he announced his inten tion not to allow his name to go before the Congressional Convention as a candi date for Congress, as follows: Gentlemen, and especially my friends, in - this Convention; Before you proceed- to the transaction of the business for which you have as sembled, I desire in the interests of peace and harmony to say only a few words; for this is neither the time nor the place to speak so tully as my inclinations prompt me. A large number of friends in the differ ent counties of this distiict have insisted upon presenting my name for nomi nation before the Congressional Convention soon to be held. 1 finally yielded to their re quest, and I understand that a large ma jority,! if not all, of the delegates from the only county in which a convention thus far ha been held, are my friends and supporters. tiou an Know tne cnaracter ana result of the brief canvass, in this I countv. Colonel Waddell has a slight majority in the county according to the rule for voting as laid down by the Executive Com mittee, whi'st perhaps a majority of the legally elected delegates here I present favor my nomination. i I entirely acquit Col. Waddell per sonally, and most of his friends, of' all connection or even sympathy with the resorts by which this majority in the county in his favor has been obtained. I could scarcely hope to escape calumny and slander in the face of the recent at tacks upon our able and upright Chie Justice, Hon. W. N, H. Smith, whose private life has been so pure, anc profttesional career so brilliant! and stain less, that all thought he. at least, would be free from the assaults of enyy and mal ice. How a large number of votes were changed in two wards of this city, on the evening the primary meetings were heM by the statements widely circulated that all the employes of the Carolina Centra railroad company who were riot in favor of my nomination had been discharged that Williams & Murchison in this city had also discharged one of their em t t . . pioyes peeause ne was not ior me : ana many other reports equally slanderous and false, are now well known. Circulated too late in the ?fterncon to be corrected, th?y did well their work. - j 'My fiiends made the fight openly, hoh estly and fairly, neither aided by newspkP pers;nor banks, as (Joi. waddell intimated m his appeal for support ; fcr the only newspaper in the District, or out of it, which manifested; auy disposition one way or tne otner, was tne liaieigu Observer, whose columns teemed with letters of Uol WaddelTs friends, recounting his exploits and bis greatness, and by asiogular coinci dence! CM Waddrll thinks the Raleigh uoserver the great:st daily newspaper ever published in North Carolina. There are only three backs in tLis city. I am inform ed that all the officials and employes in two of them were strongly against me I am giateful under these circumstances for the large and flattering vote which the delegates favoring my nomination have Received. ' Never has a man had more devoted friends. Never have friends of any man stood by him more faithfully, earnestly and truly. 1 nave neitner pub hcly nor privately said one word against the official or private life of any candidate I should spurn the most exalted position within the gift of the American people, ir it must be, reached by detraction and abuse of others. And now, in conclusion, (and I did not intend to say so much when I com menced), I shall adopt a course which is opposed by many of coy strongest and best Inends. ' The canvass in this county ha3 brought about aistate of feeling vrhicb, if not cor rected, can only result in injury to the Democratic party in this immediate locali ty. The county has declared for Uol. Waddell by a small majority, and 1 think, under the circumstances, it is my duty to say to my friends in this convention that I will iSot consent that my name be present ed before the District Convention, and such is my decision. I hold the success of the Democratic party m tms district lar above mv personal wishes, and my only desire now in this connection is that the ill feel ing engendered between brother; Demo crats may be forgotten, and that; together hev mav march forward to a common victory, giving-their sincere and earnest support to tne nominee ot our patry, whoever be may DC, andf sustaining him with hearty good will to 'the end of the fight. ; ; This course brings peace within our own ranks and insures a triumphant vic tory m this Congressional District.
