The State Medical Society. ! Goldsbobo, N. C. , May 15, 1878. Editok'Review : , The great event here this week i3 the annual meeting of the State Medical So ciety. The Society convened on yester day with an attendance of, about sejventy five physicians. The unpropitious weather does not suppress the self-sacrificing zeal of the doctors, who have literally taken possession of the town in their devotion to medical improvement and the elevation of the medical profession in North Carolina. The State Board of Health and the Board of Medical Examiners of the State are in jSession also. Papers and discus sions on I important medical subjects are the order of each day's! 'proceedings. To day that terrible disease, diphtheria, will occupy much of the attention i of the So ciety. r There are in attendance from Wilming ton and vicinity Dra. W. T. Ennett, F. W. Potter, W W. Lane, S.S. Satchwell and Thomas F. Wood. We hope to receive still further accessions from that section before the Society i adjourns. It is a fact, complimentary to medical devotion, that pbyticians most busy at home are those most prompt and faithful in attendance every year of the meetings of the State Medical Society. An important feature always cf these annual meetings of the Society 13 thej an nual address by some prominent member appointed one year previous. This year the annual orator is that talented arid de voted physician cf Fender c itnty, Dr. William T. Ennett. The public at large are always invited to be present. The Society and the citizens of Goldsboro are expecting a rich treat from Dr. Ennett. The address will come off to-night in the Presbyterian Church here at eight o'clock. Much interest is shown in the address. The leading citizens of Goldsbore are entertaining the members of the Society with proverbial hospitality. They can but admire the scientific devotion, the humate erf jrts of the North Carolina Medical As sociation. There is nothing selfish in what the members have been doing for the last twenty-five years of the existence of the Society. All is to learn better to cure disease, to prolong human existence, to lessen the ills of mortality. And then there are no politics in the Society, no am bitioua desire for the offices and honois of the Association. Science and humanity, and not self, not office, not emoluments, are the motives and objects of the mem if I : ' I 1 . I 16, 1878. NO. 91 bers of tLi3 time honored and useful Asso ciation. The North Carolina . Medical Society is about the only voluntary asso ciation . outside of the churches, that has withstood, in the State or the Squib, the shock and convulsions of war. It is a just tribute to its wise and skillful management, to its elevated purposes and to the devotion ui iLa 10 recora this iact. J I ' Gaxex. ! Goldsboro, May 16, 1878. . Editor Review: j The proceedings of the i State Medical Society are of unusual interest this yqar. Exhaustive papers and discussions on that terrible jscourge, Dpphtheria, were before the Society on yesterday. The State Board of Health is a popular subject at this meeting aLo. Tho Bjard is making fine progress and promises much good An election for a new Board1 of Medical Examiners of the State took place1 yester dayj The following ticket, proposed by Dr. Satchwell, was elected, viz: Drs. P. E. Hines, Bahnson, Jeseph Graham, George L. Kirby, Haigh, R. J. Hicks and Thos. F. 1 Wood. The members are scat tered, as you bcc, all over the State, as should be. 1 The Presbyterian Church was packed lasfr night, by al highly., intelligent and appreciative audience of ladies and gen tlemen to hear the admirable and eloquent annual address of the orator of the So ciety Dr. W. T.. Ennett, of Pender. His subject was the; Circulation , of the Blood, and he handlejl it ablyj and well. He paid a glowing tribute to the immor tal Harvey, and proved conclusively that in spite of the efforts of envy and detrac tion to rob thislgreat discoverer of the credit of his discovery, originally, . of ths circulation, he .was the true discoverer. Dr. Ennett reflected the highest credit upon his professional acquirements and abilities and was listened to most atten tively by all present. He has won pew laurels by this well-prepared ?andl excel lent address. It will be published by order of the Society, in the transactions of the year. The Publication Committee for the ensuing year are Drs. S. S. Satchwell, P. L. Murphy, G. ,G. Thomas, G. L. Kirby and W. T. Ennett. They perform the( delicate duty of criticism on the pa pers read before the Societv icidins which shall be proceedings will i be published in the North Carolina Medical Journal. Dr. W. W.
