N. C, SATURDAY, MAY 25, 1878. Organization of the Memorial Asso elation of the 5on-Cocimlsstoncd OHfern and Privates of the Third Aorth Carolina Infantry. The surviving non-cominissioaed ofii- cor8 and privates of the Third N. C. In fntrv met at the Citv Courtroom last j - - rf night for the purpose of organizing them selves into an association to be known as the Memorial Association of the Third N. C. Infantry. i j Upon motion of J M. King, Col. Wm. L. DeRosset was requested to take the Chair. Col. DeRos-et, upou assuming the Chair, thanked the meeting for the. honor conferred and stated that the movement about to be inaugurated was one that he had lonsr desired to see. . and it was a movement that he felt the deepest inter est in. But inasmuch as this was intend ed to be an organ ization of the , non commissioned officers and privates, he thought it more fitting that one of their own number should be called upon to preside, but assured them most earnestly of his entire sympathy and promised them his hearty cooperation. " Col. DeRosset was then excused. Serg't Alex. Wiggs was elected permanent Presi dent and Sergeant F. V. B. Yopp, Vice President and Corporrl Jno. D. Pugh, Secretary. Committees were appointed to dra a Constitution and By-Laws for the Society, and also to jaotify members not then present, of the organization, and Urge their attendance at the next meeting. Capt- A. L. DeRosset being called upon, delivered himself of a very happy little impromptu speech. He told the meeting thatjthis organization was an absolute ne cessity to preserve the truth of history, that the children of the members of th's Regi ment studied in the schools, kistoiies that wer ewritten in Yankee-land,by prejudiced Yankee writers ; that from such books, our ch:!dren would never learn of the un told hardships endured by their fatheis during those four long,, weary years of war. Capt. DeRosset wai heartily applauded at the conclusion of bis ; speech, and then Rev. Dr. Patterson, Chaplain of the Regi ment, 'was called upon and replied by tell ing the members in a few very appropriate remarks that he was glad to see the organ ization beguni promised them his hearty co-operation in the ' good work, and felt sure that he could say the same for a'l the other officers of the Regiment. Col. Cant well and Adj't. James, being called upon, said in substance that they could add nothing to what had been said and so well said, except to add their endorsement to all thtt had been said and done. On motion of J. M. King, a vote of thanks was tendered to Capt. H; C. Brock for the use of the City Court Room. I On motion of J. jH. Marshall, the meeting-adjourned, subject Uo the caM of the President. . ! ! Carolina Yacht Club. At the meeting of the Carolina Yacht Club, held last evening, Capt. I. B. Grain ger was .unanimously elected Commodore of the Club to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. Wright, and Mr. .George D. Parsley was elected to h vacancy thus made in the Governing Board. , . The matter of a cruise this summer by the entire squadron was "proposed, ; dis cussed and adopted and the Commodore of the Club was requested to go order it. Several additions were made to the membership at this meeting. : i City Court A. ice Kelly, one of the f soiled doves from the refined j re:incts of Paddy's Hol low, fluttered away from the - Hollow last night and flew . as high as Front street when her further progress was Arrested by officer Williams who. stopped her in her flight, owing to her very sad plight, she being very much overcome with John Barleycorn and quite' celsy to boot. The poor unfortunate was carried to the guard house and this morning Mayor Fishblate said she must pay $5 fine or stay five days in the City Prison. This being all the business before this august tribunal, His Honor stepped down and out for the day. t . i ' ' - The barque Lydia 1 Peickau was lying on .the west side of the river to-iay in full holiday trim, with colors all flying when j Mr. C. The Alarm of Fire- Shortly after 2 o'clock this afternoon a small frame house on. Fourth between Orange and Dock streets, nearly opposite the residence of Mr. Geo. R. French, was discovered to be on fire. The alarm was immediately sounded, but the fire was extinguished by persons in the neighbor hood before the engines could reach the spot. i The fire originated between the ceiling and the., weatherboarding on the north side of the house. The only theory ad vanced as to the probable cause of the origin of the fire that -we have . heard is that rats must have carried matches in between the ceiling and in some way ig nited them. This would seem strange, too, inasmuch as the building is unoccupied. There was no material damage done the property. The building belongs to Mr Edward Kidder. i ! Excursion and Return of Thank s. j The ladies of the Dorcas Socitety of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church des sire to return I their sincere thanks to Capt. Paddison, of the steamer North East, for hisggentlemahly attention on the excursion yesterday, also to Mr. E. Ham- me, the owner of the plantation, and to Mr. Stevenson, the occupant, for their per mission to use the house and grounds, and to Col. C. L. Grafflin, for his kind i exertions in their behalf. The excursion was a decided success in every respect. The grown folks, as well as tho children, enjoyed rambling about in the shady grove which sui rounds the house, or in partaking of the "good things of life,' provided by experienced caterers. But, what is better still quite a handsome sum was realized, the full amount of which is not yet definitely known. 1 . The Radical Convention. The show at theCourt House to day has been in full bloom ever since 10 o'clock and as yet there has been not only no organization, but the claims of the various delegations have not as yet been disposed of. Speechifying seems to have been the order of the day and thus business is re tarded. ! About sunset, it is thought, the Convention will be organized and some hours later the nominations are looked for. There have been some rich scenes there to-day and money, it is said, has been spent pretty freely by those who have it to spend. i The Thermometer.
