Dem ocratic successes are the rule, and Repub lican, Independent and National suc cesses the exception. Indepeudeotism in North Carolina hasn't hurt very bad this time. Both houses will be strongly Dem ocratic over all. TLe Senate is composed of fifty members, and as far as heard from there is a clear Democratic majority of eight; while in the House, which has one hundred and tweuty members, tbe result, as ascertained, gives sixicoi xcui ocratic maioritv. The Senate and the j House together will thuiefore give a Dem ocratic majority "on joint ballot of twenty- four, with eight districts and twenty-six oxrtiuties to hear frum. Yet we can safely count, we think, oii a clear Democratic majority on joint ballot of at least forty, which u i:r.otigh for all practical pur poeee. It is trus that thu opposition of Radi cals and Independents has b en a very strenuous one: but now that the fight ia over and tho result has been known, it cannot be regretted. Some very good names are lost to the list of Senators and Representatives, but it was not to be ex pected that wo could elect our entire ticket under any circumstances. We think that the Democratic party of the State and we speak now of the un adulterated article, the Simonpure De- t mocracy have great cause for self gratu lations on the happy result. Cinders In the Ejc Persons travelling much by railway are subject to continual annoyance from the flying cinders. A very effective cure is within reach of every one, and is sim ply one or two gra:ns of flax seed. They may be placed in the 'eye without injury or pain to that delicate organ, and shortly they will begin to swell and form a gluti nous snbstance that covers the ball of the eve. envoloDinir anv foreifia substance that may be in it. The irritation or cut ting of the membrane is thus .prevented, and the annoyance may soon be washed out. , A dozen of these grains stowed away in the vest pocket may prove, in an emergency, werth tbeir weight in gold. More Wonders of the Telephone. After describing a simple telephone which he made out of a tin pot by open ing the closed end, and 'tying over it a piece ef parchment, through the .centre of which a fine string was passed, Mr. Se-! vera says : "Make a loop in the string about three feet long J put this loop over tbe forehead of the deaf listener, and cause him to place the palms of his hands fiat against his ears. Let the loop pass over his hands, and he will hear the low. est whisper spoken jnto the telephone,'' If this be true, it is eertalciy extraordinary, Robeson County. The result in Robeson is not so bad as was at first reported. Instead of losing two members of the House we lose bn one, 4 C. Oliver, Democrat having been elected instead of feUi lQ)ci"; Jnd. Republican. Besides, the Democrats carry a majority of tLe county ticket. The following Is the official vote as reported to t . us: For the House R. M, Norment, Ind. Rep., 42 majority; A. C. Oliver pem.j 6 majority. For Clerk of Superior Court H. B. Regan, Dem., 0 majority, For treasurer A, E. floyd, Pern., 6Q majority. . , . For Register of Decds-J j f . Hedgpeth, I,nd. Rep., 16G majority. For Coroner W. R. Freeman.1 I)em., 0 majority, " For 8heriff W. K. Thompson, Ind. Dem., 1 majority. Sampson County. We regret to know that Mr. N. H. Fonn6ll, tho accomplished gentleman who headed the Democratic ticket in Sampson County, baa been defeated; for tbo Senate by one Wood, an ndepeudeq, RaijcaJ who seems to have been elected by a majority of 77 votes. How this occurred we are at a losa to understand, especially as the balance of the Democratic ticket was I elected. " Twas a youpg printer'" dcvilwho askpd for a kiss, but she quickly replied, did this pert little miss: "You look inky and black, though your tead may bo level, but I'll never consent to be kissed by the devil." The regular August regatta of the Carolina Yacht Club will be sailed over the Wrightsville course to-morrow, com mencing at 1 o'clock. By former agree ment of the members of the club the August race was to have Wen sailed from the buoy opposite the banks house, across Masonboro Inlet, to Fowlers Point on Mason borp Sound and return, but by con sent of those interested, the race will be ssiled over the regular course on account of the danger in crossing the Inlet to tbe smaller boats. The following yachts have been entered and wlli start as written: Bessie Ltt, sailed by O A Wiggius. Restless, " 4 S P Cowan. frolic, V ' Geo D Parsley. lanme, " " jJohn H Daniels. It is not as yet definitely decided wheth er the loam will be sailed in tho race, but the impression is she will be and sailed. As usnal much interest is mani fested in the race by those members of the club who own yachtsi , The only prize to be sailed for is tbe champion flag of tho club, which was won from the Ro8a by the Hippie on tho Fonrth of July.
