The excursion train which leaves Char lotte to-night ia expected to arrive in this ritv tn-morrow morning. Arrangements have been made with the Agent of the Passport to convey such of the exclusion 1st who wish to go to Smithville. Severe Storm. Capt. Worth, of the steamer A. P. Urtt reports having encountered yesterday morning, while near Morehead Shoals, the aererest sto'm he ever saw. He says had it lasted twenty minutes longer, in all probability his steamer would have been driven up in the woods. I 1 : : i Ilog cholera. We are reliably informed that cholera is plajing sad havoc with hogs, turkeys and fowls on Hewlett's Creek, Masouboro Sound. One faimer alone has lost over one hundred hoi, turkeys and chickens, while others have suffered considerable lo83 but not to such an extent. Good Curser. "The cussin crazy 'oman" who peram bulates up and down Water street, curs ing out any and every thing she chooses, extended her walk up Front street this morning and tried to curse out a pile of grindstones. If there was to be a curs ing bee, we would bet "the cussin' crazy 'oman" against tbe United States. She's an fail in this little accomplishment, and no mistake. f The Eclipse Last Night. : We presume that the 'ardently looked for eclipse of the moon took place last night on schedule tim and according to the announcement made iu the bills and the almanacs but there was very little of it si en in this latitude, the clouds inter fering to prevent. About half-past 7 o'clock there was a slight momentary rift through which a glimpse was obtaiu el which shr.ved that the show was in progress, but the clouds again interfered and there was nothing more seen of the eclipse. The Privilege License and the Pur chase Tax. As there seems to be tome misunder standing in relation to the liability to in dictment of merchants fur failure to list purchases, the Raleigh Observer states that a privilege license has first to be ob tained, which is good for one year from time of its issue, and on the first of July and first of January the amount of pur chases has to be given in to the Register of Deeds, keeping liquors separate from merchandise. Merchants can give in now, but will not be required to pay for a few days to come. . ! The August Meteors. Tbe earth ploughs her way through the August meteor zone on the 10th, and on that night and those before and , after, myriads of meteors will descend through the atmosphere in fiery tears. The above is authentic from the Provi dence Journal. So look out for them, especially in the northeast where the dis play will be most radiant. The sky will present a brilliant spectacle, with Jupiter and Venus in all their beauty and the trailing splendor of the shooting stars. No smokod glass necessary, as night fur nishes the eclipse background of the astro nomical exhibition. The only drawback at present is the full moon. Is Croquet a Moral Game ? ! At the game of croquet is quite popular in these parts, with many of our people, and especially with the young ladies and their tie voted, attendants, we copy the fol lowing article on the subject from a recent number of the Burlington Ilawkeye, which considers croquet from a moral stand-point and seriously asks if the game is moral. The llaickeye says : One day this summer we rode fifty wiles In a railway car, seated behind four men who were playing with thoseawful play things of the devU-cards. They Pjyed euchre until they were tired of it. They nlaved a little seven up, pedro and occa sionally a trifle of poker. We never beard a dispute. Their bursts of merri. ment occasionally at some unexpected play wnAa'edly drew our eyes from our book. Tfaeynever quarreled", and tiever called names once. fAfter got out aTour sta lion we sat at a window, and watched a party of young maidens playing croquet. In fifteen minutes we saw two persons cheat successfully. We beard the one Dlave- who did not cheat accused of cheat in -five times. We heard four distinct, bitter quarrel. We heard a beaatiful youo" girl tell two lies, and a meek look ing young man three, and finally we saw tho young girl throw her mallet against the fence so hard that It frightened a bom, tbe ether young girl pounded her mallet so bard on the ground that it knocked the bads off an apple tree, then both bnged Into tha house at different tiooxs 'and the two young men looked sheepish and went off after a d rink. Xow, why is this ? City Court. James O'Reilly was called to the wit ness stand this morniDg ami stated tinder oath that he had been having a b'iC of an evening with Misther and Misthress 0'- i i ! Brien on Sunday last 'when afther awhile Misther O'Brien, Martin v. O'Brien' and his sister-in-law, Misthress John O'Brien fell to beating him, and the lady kicked him iu the face while he was down. What they did it for, O'lieillyi declared he did not know, for they had been hav ing a bit tit a pleasant time together, taking on a few drops of the 1 chrathur. The witness' face was badly mulcted, and showed signs of severe blows. 1 Martin O'Brien, when asked what he had to say, replied that he would rather give the man teu dollars than to hurt him and stated to the court that he thought the man was a robber when he saw him ! i coming through tbe window, and ended by saying that he had been drinking and did not know what he ' was doing. His Honor then bound Martin W. O'Brien and Maria O'Brien in a justified bond of 100 over to the next term of the Criminal Court.1 1 Handy Williams., a colored individual,; who was arrested at the instigation of "Col." Tecumseh Cut-lar for disorderly conduct, in that the defendant had abused and cursed the "Cul" and Alderman Lowery ou the' street,; was discharged upon the payment of costs, inasmuch as the defendant ha 1 apologised to the offen ded parties and thus' madei the amende honorable. From the report of vessels from foreign ports bound for Wilmington, as published by us, there fcid3 fair to be a busy time for our merchants in the no very distant future. The list embraces a fleet of 48 vessels, of which 40 are square-riggcrsand at an averago carrying capacity of 250 tons each, which we' presume is a very low estimate, 12,000 tons or 24,000,000 pounds of freight will ha-required to load them. This fact removes the ideaj of mere idle conjecture and brings a positive assurance of business, ifnot of better times, It must ' stimulate business, and many must receive matirial benefit from their arrival and the expenditures which must be made on their account 1 while in port.
