Most uf our invalids are such, and mil lions of our healthy people will become invalids, for the want of paying the most ordinary, attention to tho require ments of the skin. That membrance is to often regarded as a covering only in stead of a complicated piece of machinery, scarcely second in its texture and sensi tiveness to the ear or the eye. Many treat it with as little reference to its prop er functions as if it were , nothing better than a bag for their bones. It is this in consideration for the I skin that is the cause of a very large proportion of dis eases in the world. If, as elaimed by some scientists, four-fifths in bulk vof al we eat and drink must either pa?3 off through the skin or be turned "back on thesvstem as a ooison. and that life depends as much upon these exhalations through the skin as upon inhaling pure air through the lungs, it'must be of tba most vital importance to keep that channel free. New HanoTcr County Nl C . A special c. rresp-ndunt ot the II evihw at Long C-nek sends us thj following paiticulars relative to ' the recently dis covcretl murdtr in Pender eouuty -of th? color' d man, Reuben Herring, and of the arrest vnd eouunittal of his wife and. Alien Matthews, t, await trial at the next term of Pender Superior Court Durinr; the latter pait of September last Reuben lUrring, an Cstimable col ored mm, riving in Columbia township, in this coutity, suddenly disappeared. i rorn nis steady itaUits and the routine ot business he hd on hand, his neighbors thought strange ot his suddtm departure, leaving as he i!id, his wito and five small cbild'tn to win m he seemed devoted. His wife said he had gore to B'aden. Time passed, and yet nothing was heard from Reuben, either by his relatives in the neighborhood or his immediate family. From the intimacy, current in the nigh boihood, existing between Reuben's wite and one Allen Matthews as well as from the terrible character of Allen, it was thought that Reuben might have been foully dea't with. Reuben was very steady and regular in bis habits, as it was noticed and remarked by all bis t neighbors that Reuben Was U3ver seen from his home,' save on Sun day, without his working axe with him ; if be went to a neighboring store to trade, lie took it, with hiui.'l But since his departure his axe had been seen at his house, and bis wife cut up his 4 Sunday coat" to make a qui't of. Hh "gocd pair ' of shoes were at home, and his "best breeches" were seen in Irs house. He had defrauded nobody to cause bis departure, but on the contrary money was due him from this year's crop of tu p ntine. All ih;s increased the suspicion enter tained against Reuben's wife and Allan: finally a letter came from Blaceu county directed to Reuben's wile, and purporting to have Reuben's name signed tu it e:l pressing deep concern for his wiie and the loved ones he had lelt behind. It directed his wife to 'sell his turpentine, and pay his debts, and if this was not sulhcient lo sell his favorite "axe." The Postmaster at Moore's Creek by mistake gave the letter to another woman of the same name, who made the disclosure. The letter further stated that he (Reuben) was making money but was on his way to South Carolina, and would not return until about; Christmas It was ascertained that Allen visited Bla den, jassed oil' as Reuben Herring aud procured the letter to be written. All this appeared very thin, and enly served to increase the belief that Reuben had been destroyed. A warrant was procured from Justice Mclntire for the arrest of Lucy, Reuben's wife, and Allan Matthews. Upon the investigation, Lucy declared that Allan told her where lit) had "hid ' Reuben. Search wa3 made and the dead body of the unfortunate colored man was found concealed in an old well, about, forty' yards from Allan's house. She further disclosed that on a Sunday morning in the latter part of September last, she left her house for Allan's, dis tance about a mile, and while talking with Allan on his piazza Reuben ap proached; some words ensued when Allan pounded Reuben with the breach of his gun, which was so successfully warded off by Reuben that Allan procured his ax and belled Reuben tOj tho ground, and continued to strike him on the head while yet prostrate, 'and "till he finished him.:' Coroner James was at once notified, and upon the inquest the jury found that Reuben Herring came to his death at the hands of Allan Matthews. . - Both parties were committed to piison and though it may bo 1 that Lucy may escape by turrning State's evidence yet How to cook a.
