Burglars. Two winters ago burglars were so com- mon in this city that we were at a loss to find proper headings for the cases as we wrote them up for publication. The midnight tax gatherers have commenced their winter's work in good earnest and it would be well to have some active steps taken to put a stop to these burglars before they reap too great a harvest. About tkree feet of hemp judiciously used would stop them. it fcaa oeen repeatedly snown mat one geu better results from leas than twAhIrda of Doolst's Ye-Lst Towdkb, than from fullamonntof any other baking powder the world, llottsekeepers have found this lact, and the books of grocers all through the country prove tbii immense popular preference atxolutely. At Cape Look out it was raining rery hard and the wind was blowing at from fifty to sixty miles an hour. At Smithville tbe maximum velocity of the wind was forty-eight miles an hour. All tbe pilot boats are in, and the tugs are Abcberwd oot in the stream. No damage is reported. The wind was at its highest here at twelve o'clock to day. Many trees and fences have been blown down, but no damage that we hive he.ird of, other ti an the reports in this issue oCthe Review. The storm js still raging, notwith standing the fact that the danger signal has been hmlttl down aid the off shore signal hoisted. The in cotnir g tide, driven by a pretty severe wind from the south west, swelled to an unumil height this mon iug and the waves created by the ga!o were al most leaping over the wharf. at Market Dock. Two raft loa Is of wo'k! were blown to .pieces in the river this mt.roiug near the foot of Orange street, and the driftwood went floating up the stream Numerous small boats manned bycoloreJ individuals, regardless of the wind and waves put out from shore and reaped quite a harvest for a winter's store bypickiog up the numerous sticks that were floating by a couple of Norwegian sailors in a sort of life boat, sharp at both ends, with a mall mainsail and j b for sails, we-o the object of many eyes fiom ths toot of Market street this morning s they were vainly trying to tack and beat down the river against wind and tide. At times it seemed as if the boat would capsize every minute, but the plucky Norwegians stil maintained their course until their jib was carried away, when in trying to rig up their jib again the boat was, turned round and when last seen by us she was scudding away before the wind in the di rection of Point Peter at the rate of ten miles an hour. Unpleasant Rumor. There was a painful rumor afloat upon tho street to-day that Captain Oliver and his noble ship, the Raleigh, of.the Balti more and Wilmington Steamship Line, had gone down at sea, during the recent gale off this coast. Upon hearing the rucsor we immediately repaired to head quarters at Captain A. D. Cazaux's office and made inquiry of that gentlemen if there was any truth in the report. We were assured by Captain C. that there was no foundation for the report other than there had been a storm and that the steamer was due here to-day. Captain Cazaux's office is in direct communication with the signal office bnilding by means of a telephone and the moment any news of such a character is received Captain Cazaux would be informed of the fact. A reporter of the Beticw in making his daily rounds in search of news items visited tha signal office to ascertain if pos sible if there jvere any disasters reported by the storm and found out that nothing has yet been' learned relative to the re cent gale beyond what is elsewhere re ported in these columns. A Cotton Thief Abroad. Laet Friday night a bale of cotton was stolen from Messrs. Woody & Currie's warehouse, foot of Ann street, of which no trace has yet been found, and last night another bale was stolen. The fact was duly reported and soon after Jim Clark, colored, (Lemonade Jim) appeared at the City Hall and told Capt. Brock that small flat belonging to him, which was last night tied up at the foot of Ann street, was found by him this morning down by the Burnt Mill.partially sunk, and with a bale of cotton in it, which was afterwards identified by Messrs. Woody & Carrie as theirs. No clue. I. o. O. s. and D z. At a meeting of Mt Zion Lodge No. 9, LOG. S. and D. A Desperate ...,- i,i, .-rA i lptlires his Wife JUld Deed. He capt carries her off to lhe Swamps. The outlaw, Elvi Johnson, together with Simon Haggett, who killed the col ored man, Boyd, in this city some months ago, and a tall mulatto fellow, said to be from South Carolina, all heavily armed, entered Ida Mack's house, on ths corner of Third and Harnett streets, last night about 7 o'clock, where Johnson's wife happened to be at the time. Immediate ly upon entering, Johnson seized his wife and lifting heron his shoulder said, ' come along, darling, you are mint'." Tha woman resisted ah she could, at the same time screaming aad yelling for help as hard as she could. The outlaw attempt ed to quiet his wife by assuring her that no harm would coma to her. Johnson then made his way out, followed closely by his brigand companions, in the direc tion of the river, which it is supposed he crossed- in the vicinity of Hilton, to the dense swamDo bevoadl. There is a rumor on the streets to-day that Johnson, after leaving the house above mentioned, murdered his wifa by cutting her throat. But we have been un able to ascertain anything definite in re gard to this last act. The villain stated to those who were present last night that he intended return ing to-night for his little two year old child which was left in charge for the time beinr of his wife's mother. Thi? afternoon the mother-in-law of Johnson made applica. tion at the police headquarters for protec" tion, asserting that : she was afraid that "JElvi, would return to-nigh: and kill both her and the child. Upon entering the house last nigh t where he captured his wife, the outlaw was heard to say to his companions "keep your guns ready for action." Each man was armed with a rifle and had bayonets fixed, besides having several pistols stick ing in their belts. Application was made "yesterday we understand . to a Justice of the Peace in this city tojiave a peace warrant issued against Haggett, but the Magistrate de clined owing to the fact that a warrant had already , been .issued against this party'ttpca tho irero ecriass charge cf lectin I h f h nmnu .. ... n ir um t.uiu m uur uruiuer grun tail W( uiu ; its first truck piu meets fc" m cn'mn, n J0 other way. taken away part of their trade, and making abutment, or i hi stm nnrn r . accounted lor. lur.
