Talking about old burying places, it is known to very few, and those the oldest of our people, that the site now occupied by th. City Hall, known in je olden time as "The Old Academy Hill," as well as most ofthe souare on which itstands. was once a crave yard. There is no record of this but it must hxve dated back as far as the Revolution- ary War and it Is supposed that the ground was used at that time by the British troops quartered here. There is no record of the! fact, however, and nothing is known beyond j the discovery of bene and decaying coffins all over the ground. The Old Acad- emy, a huge structure of brick which contained a theatre on the first floor and academy rooms above, and which was pulled down a few years previous to the war to make room for the present handsome and imposing building, . . This was onlyabout seven-1 teen or eighteen rears after the close of) the Revolutionary War and we are there-1 fore led to doubt the fast ofthe ground j having been used for the interment of British soldiers as the building would hardly have been erected upon a grave- yard less thyin a quarter of a century old. I We therefore incline to the opinion that I the interments there were made at a period I of time considerably prior to the Revoln- tionory War aud that the site upon which I time. He will be pleased to meet him to the City Hall now stands was probably night. ; the place of burial for the earliest settlers I . ,. . I ai ttllS place. I The old Academy building was erected by subscription from the then citixeas of Wllmiigtoa. . .. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11. 1878.
