If my friends have any alabaster boxes laid away, full of perfumes, of sympathy and affection, which they intend to break over my dead body, I would rather they would bring them in my weary hours and open them, that I "may be refreihed and cheered by them while I need them. I would rather have a bare coffin without a flower, and a funeral without an eulogy, than a life without the sweetness of love and sympathy. Let us learn to anoint our 'friends beforehand far their burial. Post mortem kindness does not cheer the burdened spirit. Ijlowers on the coffin cast no fragrance backward over the weary days of cur lives." A HorrlDIe Death- Buck Powell, a colored barber and a native of this city, whtre he was well known, met with a horrible death in Raleigh on Sunday morning last. He removed from this city to Raleigh some three or tour years ago, since which time he has followed his trade in that city. The 2?tcs gives us the following ac count of the horrible catastrophe: Sunday .morning Pr6f. Powell, a col- ore4 barber, was at some trouble starting a fire m his shop. Thin ting to hasten the ignition of the coal he took a gallon can of kerosene, and turning it up, pour ed part of the contents in the stove. He then put the can down on tee floor, near by. , A match had fallen on the floor, and he stepped on this. In an instant it ignited, setting fire to some oil drops on the floor, and then exploding' the can, filling the shop with flames. The Pro fessor was in his dressing gown, which was covered with the flaming oil. He rushed out into the street, and yelled fire at thetop of his lungs. Attracted by bis cries and seeing his awful predicament, a crowd gathered. One of these, Mr. G reason, with a pocket knife boldly cut away the burning clothes, until harlly a rag remained. The unfortunate man was taken into bis shop, when it was found that the lower part of both legs, as well as of a portion of his back, was badly burned. He was carried home and a doctor dressed the wounds. I But dispite all the care of the pbysi cian8 the injuries were so serious as to baffle either relief or cure, and the suf fering of the poor man was intense. But death at length interposed and at 8:30 P. m., yesterday the miurea man died. Powell was a native of Wilmington but came here some two years ago and open- ed a shop. : ! We call the attentien of "The UxJ pay ers, bond holders, business men and ail others interested in the welfare of the city of Wilmington' to the notice of the citi zen's meeting to be held at the City Hall to-morrow (Thursday, 10th) at night, P.
