B.iid heaJdi people count tbemselve among the immortal few that were not born to dye. Ma!. nceihard's Last Hours. From a gentlaman in this city, who was present in Raleigh on Monday, we have learned some particulars as to ,tbe last hours of the lamented Maj. Engel hard. His condition was found to be de cidedly worse on last Saturday morning, the day of his death and in .was on that morning that awakening from a short doze, with his head on his daughter's arm, he enquired very calmly of her if he was dying. The question was one so full ol auguish to the young lady that she could not reply but at once burst into tearr. This was a tuflicieot rply to the ques ticn. Some time after that Maj. Engel- i.ard expressed a desire to see Dr. Mar shall, Rectcr of Christ Church, and it was to him that he made a profession ot laith ia the Episcopal Church and from him that he received, first the rite cf bapt's-m and afterwords the Sacrament. About 11 o'clock the dying man relapsed grad ually into unconsciousness from which ie did not arouse. His end was quiet and peaceful and he died w ith scarcely ar y demonstratiou of pain.' The body did not lie in state at the Cap itol. Sucdi was, indeed, the desire tl many, but the bereaved family and some of Maj. Engelhard's warmest personal friends objected. Hence, the funeral took place from the Yarborough House, where the family resided, thence to the Capitol, where all the olEcials and members of the Legislature joined it, thence to Christ Church and thence to Oakwood Cemetery. It was a fearful day, but notwithstanding the rain and the slush and the cold, tie ceremonies were very largely attended. Major Engelhard's family are plunged in the deepest distress. He had been sick su:h a 'shoit time and had always enjoyed such robust health that the shock was simply appalling in its severity. His entire devotion to his fam ily had idolized him in their eyes arfd hence the blow has left them almost com pletely crushed under the weight of their sorrow. Such was their devotion to him that he was nursed all through bis illness by his two daughters alone, they refusing to surrender the task even to his most in timate friends. There is one thiog we are glad of, however, and that is that the family of the lamented deceased will not be left un provided for in the future. Mai. Engel- hard's life was insured for $19,600 and all of this sum will, we presume, saon be paid over to his family. Criminal Court. His Honor Judge Meares presiding. The following cases were disposed of to day : State va. Mary Stuart, charged with assault and battery. Verdict guilty. State vs. Jno. N. Hines, charged with retailing without a license. On trial.
