The front brickwork in tbe Jones London building on Water street baring been completed, the workmen are to day engaged ia taking down the scaffolding that has so long been an impediment , to pedestrians on North Water street, la will be a matter, of congratulation to bro kers and commercial reporters on a rainy day like yesterday. More Handsome Things, Mr. Heicsberger is still getting in new and handsome musical instruments and he prides himself in keeping up with tbe improvements in his line of trade. See advertisement for particulars and then look at his stock of usefu instructive and pleasing things. Dead Men's Bones. A day or two ago, while Mr. McDermott was engsged in digging up some gas pipes near the. corner of Fourth aud Chestnut streets, he discovered a number of bones of dead men. Judg ing from what he said, We presume several persons were buried in that locality long years ago. The River. -The muddy water of the Capo Fear, driven byi the strong northwest wind that is prevailing to-day, ia rushing rapidly on down to the sea. The heavy rains in the up country re cently has caused the river to rise some ten or fifteen feet since yesterday and we are informed by Captain Watson, of the North State, that there will probably be a rise of forty or fifty feet on this freshet. i Criminal Court. The Criminal Court has been occupied the most of the day and up to the time of closing our report with the trial of Fd- ward Thomas, colored, for perjury. The case was given to the jury about half-past 2 o'clock when the court took a recess for dinner. At half-past 3 o'clock the jury were still out. The Court has signified its intention' of finishing" the docket with the jury cases to-day. To-morrow sentence will probably le passed on those who have beeu convicttd at this term, among whom are the two colored women found guilty of man slaughter. Music and Calisthenics. e One of the most pleasing exhibition that we have witnessed for a long time came oft last eveniug at Me-ginLey's Hall in this city. It was a representation by the pupils Of Mi8S9s Burr &James' school, a melange, consisting of music, vocal and instrumental, and exercises in gymnasties and calisthenics. It was an exceedingly agreeable entertainment and we do cot know when we have passed an hour or two more pleasantly. The exhibition opened by anchor as, tiie Bell Song, rendered by the pupi's in fine Style, which was followed by instrumental music by one of the young misses, who acquitted herself most creditably. Then came the. Indian Club exercises, trunks and waist exercise? with wands and the amusing recitation of the Razor Seller, followed by the beautiful duet "Wert thou in the cauld blast" which was rap turously encored, tbe Indian Club race and more instrumental music, tbe who e closing with the charge of tho Light Brigade, perforn:ed in elocution, music and gymnastics. To say that we were pleased would con vey but a slight idea of eur feelings; we were simply delighted. The innocence cl childhood, and the purity" of youth have an irresistible charm for us, aud we a1. ways feel happier and better, too, when we see them enjoying themselves in innocent amusements, as they did bat evening. The exhibition vras a success in every way, and as we gazed upon their graceful movements with the clubs and wands, their light and fantastic step in the airy dance, the admirable time they kept to the notes of swelling music, we felt that it was good to be there, and we could not well determine to whom ths meue of praise belonged, the youthful pupils, who showed themselves such apt scholars, or their ac complished teachers, who had so f .ithfully instructed them. Such exhibitions are delightful they s ir the blood in the heart of age, causing us to forget for the moment tbe troubles that surround us on every side, and while witnessing their merry gambols and lis tening to their joyous laughter (is there anything on earth so full of joy and happiness as the laugh of childhood?) we feel that we are again a child, jo':nng in their sports, and again we are happy. We thank the ladies connected with this in slitntion for the pleasnre they gars us last evening; it will dwell in our memory as a very pleasant recollection for a long time to come. A card.
