The Lecture Upon Ireland.
By far the largest and most intelli
gent audience that has gathered at the
Opera House on any previous occasion
during this season, assembled last night
to listen to Obi. MacRaes lecture upon
Ireland and the Irish people. The lec
turer premised by saying that he feared
his auiience would be disappointed, and
during his preliminary remarks, before he
had dived welljinto the subject, stated
further, as though to prepare his hearers
upon the exact nature anrT X&fht -ofJ the
discourse, that it
was
not one of senti-
meat
The lecture is one of a oiries prepared
in ?eply to Mr. Froude, theemiuent Eng
lish historian who visited this country a
few years since and whe lectured upon a
similar theme but from an entirely dif
ferent stand point.
The series were prepared while the
author was a resident of Memphis several
years ago and at the solicitation of friends
who were cither natives, or descendants
of those who were natives of the Emerald
Isle.
While we were highly entertained by the
gentleman's fine rhetoric,his superb diction
and his splendid elocution, we are free to
confess to a feeling of disappointment
at the particular style of the lecture ; we
were not prepared exactly for the his
torical argumentative lecture which was
griven us; and then again we cannot al
together agree with the distinguished
lecturer in the deductions which he made
last night.
The lecture was interspersed with
many amusing and thrilling incidents,
chief among which were the very
laughable discription of an Irian, wake
which the lecturer had attended by
special request duriDg the year 1868,
and the interesting and humorous
aceount of a free fight ia a Dublin thea
tre, where shillclahs where brandished
overhead in numerous quantity the
result of which was the whole theatre
broke up in a general row. The graphic
and vivid account of the battle of Hastings
was as picturesquely given as words could
make it.and drew a sympathetic tear from
many of his hearers when he related in
thrilling words Edith s search for Harold
among the thousand slain, solitary and
alone, upon the bloody field the night
after the battle.
During the course f hfs remarks, Col.
MacRae paid a very handsome compliment
to the Editor of the Star, Mr. T. B, Kings,
bury (though not calling him by name), in
which he spoke of that gentleman as a
master of English literature. Such a com.
pliment, coming from such a source, is not
to be esteemed lightly, and in our judgmen
was worthily bestowed.
Mr. F. H. Darby, in a very happy little
speech, which was both eloquent and
timely, presented the lecturer to the au
dience. Change of Schedule.
We learn that a new schedule is
to be put in operation over the Carolina
Central Railway in a few days. By this
change, we understand that the run from
Wilmington to Charlotte, a distance of
188 miles, will be made in eight hours,
which will be a big improvement over
the time required by the present schedule
to make the run.
Another Wilmington Tictory.
In these days of rigid retrenchment it
is refreshing to hear that the salary of one,
at least, of our State officials has been in
creased. We refer to oar efficient and
overworked Quartermaster General. Un
til recently his pay was nihil. It is now
twice that amount; and the Attorney-
General is industriously seeking to ascer
tain whether, under the circumstances,
the said oeffiial should net turn some-
tning into the .treasury. A nice ques
tion of law is involved, in form and man
ner following, to-wit, that is to say:
Whether a grantee who orginally got
nothing and ha the same doubled does
thereby become indebted to the grantor,
q. e. d. Keform is also to he enforced in
the same department, or in plain English,
the military character aforesaid is to be
required, ont of his ample salar, to sup
ply himself with a brand new uniform,
and to appear on all occasions gorgeous in
buttons as becomes his high rank.

The Ijenten Season Ash Wednes-
To-day, Ash-Wednesday, begins the
solemn season of Lent, during which the
church more particularly directs the
thoughts of its members to the closing
seenes in the Life of Christ on Earth.
The season is generally observed in the
Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches,
whose people are invited to cast behind
them the pleasures and frivolities of the
world, to fast inspirit as well as in body,
rand to give themselves knp to religioes
devotion and self-examination during the
forty days following. Lenten services
will be held regularly during each week
of the ssason at the Episcopal and Catho
lic churches
Homan Catholic theologiaus and many
rrotestauta mamtaiu that this fast is, in
substance, of aposto'ic origin; such is the
opiuiou of St. Jerome. But the greater
number of Protestants consider it to be
of ecclesiastical institution. The com
mon opinion is "that it was established as
a preparation lor the great anniversaries
of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection,
and in rememberance of his fast of 40
days in the wilderness. Some authors
contend that iu the beginning this pre
paratory toast was limited to too first
four days of the Holy Week, embracing
a fast of forty hours, which was gradually
extended to forty days; but according to
others, the fast was one of forty davs
from the very first.
There is considerable uucartalnty regard
ing the nature ot the obligation of fasting.
Tne fasts of Holy Week seem to have been
kept by all a3 obligatory, but the others, it
s thought, were assumed as voluntary.
The general custom came at length to be
a general law. lhe Council at Laodicea.
(about 3G3) prescribed entire abstinence
from food on Holy Thursday and the ex
clusive use of "dry food" duriug all the
fast davs of Lent. The Council of Or-
eans in 541 commanded that those who
did net keep Lnt should be considered as
transgressing the law of the church, and
the eighth Council of Toledo, in 646, fer
bade the use of flesh meat. Wine, oil, and
animal food were prohibited on fasting
days and are so still in the Greek Church.
By degrees in the West the use of all kiuds
of food, except flesh, eggs, cheese and wine,
was allowed, and became general after
the 11th century, and therafcer, even
the use of these Was permitted, flesh being
alone excepted. Indeed, judging Iromth
writings of the early fathers, the custom
had been to take but one meal a day, in
the evening, consisting either of "dry
food" or bread and water. As the vigor
of the fast was relaxed, the hour of refec
tion was advanced from sunset to noon;
and in the 13 h century a slight cold
collation was allowed in the evening. In
the early ages also, tho fast of Lent was
kept with the greatest vigor by the Cate
chumens and public penitents; by the
former as a fitting preparation for their
solemn baptism on Holy Saturday, and
by the latter in the hope of receiving at
the same time entire absolution or a miti
gation of their penance The infliction of
all species of corporal punishment was
forbidden during Lent. For the same
reason theCoancil of Clermont (1065)
ea joined, nner plain of ex-communication,
that the universal peace called the lruce
of God should be observed from Ash
Wednesday till Whitsuntide.
In the Roman Catholic Church m the
United States, the use of flesh meat is
allowed several times a week in accord
ance with the demands made by each
Bishop for his diocese But fish and
flesh are never allowed during Lent at
the same meal. In nearly all the Pro
testant churches of coutinental Europe
particularly in the Lutheran church,
Lent is still a penitential season, lhe
Church of England keeps the Lenten fast
on her calendar with appropriate ser
vices, as dees the Protestant Episcopal
Church.
