This MorHing's Fire.
The alarm of fire this morning wi
caused by the burning of the roof of a
shanty in Northrop's Alley, between
Orange and Anu and running through
frem Second to Third streets. The build
ing was occupied by colored persons and
the fire was extinguished before the en
gines arrived.
$60 Reward.
A lad named John Catalano, abrut 11
years old, is missing and wanted at In
dianapolis. A description of him was
received at the police office in this city
this morning. He is described as
about four feet high, with light bine
eyes, and when last seen was in a dark
suit of clothes with a small harp in his
possession. Whoever finds him will get
$50 reward.
Venerable Visitors.
A truly venerable couple, Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas D. Oldham, are on a short
visit to this city to their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Oldham.
They reside in Orange county, at the
Oaks, ten miles Southwest of Hillsboro
and twelve miles West of Chapel Hill.
Mr. Oldham is 80 years of age and his
wife is nine years his junior. They have
been married fifty-two years, hare bad
nine children, and at the celebration of
their golden wedding, two years ago, had
not tuen lost a child. The number ol
their descendants now living has not beeu
counted up lately, but it is certain that
they have never been without a ham an
Oldham, we mean in their house.
Lock yonr Doors.
Complaint is again made by tLe police
authorities of the carelessness of some
merchants and their clerks in leaving their
places of business open at night or leav
ing them insecurely fastened. Last night
the key of a s ore on North Water street
was left in the door, in consequence of
which, the policeman on that beat had to
leave his post to go in search of the owner
or the proprietor of the store for the pur.
pose of notifying him of his, or his clerk's,
carelessness. A little more careful at
tention in bolting windows and fastening
doors would save the weary watchman a
sight of trouble and tbVparties themselves,
probably, the necessity of getting up out
of a warm bed on a cold frosty night.
The Ancient Bones.
For tho past year or two there has been
much said relative to the discovery of
human bones on the plantation ef A. R.
Black, Esq., in the lower part of this
county, wh en belonged to the bodies of
nobody knows who and nobody knows
when There is not much doubt in 'our
minds that they are the bones of Indians
placed there, perhaps, centuries before
the occupancy of this country by the
whites. It is well known that the
aborigines almost invariably located near
some stream where game and fish were
abundant, and as a rule buried their dead
in one large sepulchre. Several of those
mounds or burial places have heen found
near this city, and there is every reason to
suppose that the bones discovered there
were those of some tribe of Indians, who
had found en the banks of the Cape Fear
many pleasant places on which to pitch
their tents. There are two of the mouds,
one of which is quite large, near Kenans
ville, Duplin county, in this State. Tra
dition informs ns that those mounds were
burial plaees for a portion the of Tascorora
tribe of Indians, who at one time made
that an abiding place.

1 his Afternoon's Fire.
The alarm of Ere was souU'Vu this
afternoon about 2:15 o'clock by the lire
alarm of the First Presbyterian church
and in about ten minutes afterwards was
taken up by the -Market House I ;ll. rj 'he
alarm was caus-d by the burning of tUe
roof of a house on the south side of Church,
between Second and Third streets. The
damage was s ight and the fire was ex
tinguished Ixfre the fire deprirtmeat
could locate it. The dwelling was occu

The Dime Festival.
Our young fiietds, the children of St.
Paul's Lutheran Sunday School, advertise
a Dime Festival for m-morrow evening,
in this issue, to which we call the atten
tion of our reoders. The price is only ten
cents, and we hope everybody and all the
rest of creation will spare that little amount
in encouraging a noble work while adding
to the pleasure and enjoyment of all con
cerned. Don't forget the place the
South side of Market street, in the build
ing formerly occupied by the Wheeler &
Wilson Sewing Machine Company. There
is lots of fun in ten cents thu3 bes'.owed.
A Revolution in flair Dressing.
The masculiue mind will rejjice at the
fact that a style of d resting the hair more
natural and more simple than has pre
vailed for years, is about to come into
vogue, The ladies may not fancy :t as
well as the huge unsightly mouu U of
false hair, filled somethu'-s with filthy
abominations, which have heretofore sur
mounted the feminine head bur their bus
bands and thir friends and their neigh
bors will rejoice. Here is what we find
about the new style in a recently im
ported Paris letter:
A noted revolution has just heen ac
complished, but be not alarmed, good
readers; I am not about to discuss French
politics or tho aspects cf the situation.
The revolution whereof I speak is wholy
a pacific one, yet it will be marked in its
efforts, inasmuch as its tendency is to
make our pretty American girls look all
the prettier. 1 allude to the sudden and
marked change that has passed over the
heads of tho female society caders of Paris
in the matter of arranging their hair.
The eld puritan preacher who took for
his text, "Top-knot come down" ("Let
him that is upon the housetop not come
down' ) would surely have felt satisfied
with the new fashion All puffs and bows
and braids and fussiScations on jthe
top of the female bend have vanished
into thin air. The Parisian belles now
wear their hair simply parted in front
and either waved or crimped as behfc
suits the style of tho face, and coiled at
the back in a braided knot placed rather
low. A single large flower placed at one
side of this knot and drooping on th
neck is the only ornament that fashion
now sanctions This new coiffure is not
only simple at.d natural, but it is won
derfully becoming, the beautiful shapeli
ness of the feminine head coming fully
into view for the first time in many
years. Th suddenness as well as the
universal way in which this new sty e
has been adopted is very r rnarir.ib'e.
