The man who wrote that "duty" was the most sublime word in the English 'anguage is believed to have beea the col lector f a lucrative port. Col J G. Burr, of this city, is in Raleigh in attendance on meeting of the Board of Directors of the Insane Asy lum, of which he is a member. The Association ot Officers of Third N. C Infantry meet to-night at Dr. Thos. F. Wood's office. Business of importance will be brought before the meeting. One of the best kinds of traiuing tor a pedestrian is to have his girl live about twenty miles from his home, with no railroad or stage communications, and the horses all busy. Wnen a boy walks with a girl as though hs were afraid some one would see him, the girl is his sister. If he walks so close as to nearly crowd her against the fence" sho is the sister of some one else. Col. W. L. Smith, P G M. in the I. O. O. Some of our readers inform us that we made a mistake iu our article on the "First of April' In yesterday's issue, in calling attention to the thirteenth versa of the fifth chapter of the first book of Samuel, and say that there are but twelve vert.es in that chapter We accept the correction, but. congratulate ourselves as having ins ru menta: m causing a search rfth?. Dr. Day says, in a late lecture: What ever be the plan of treatment decided upon, rest is the first principle to incul cate in every severe headache. Rest, which the busy man 'and the anxious mother cannot obtain so long as they can manage to keep about, is one of the first remedies for every headache, and we should never cease to enforce it. The brain, when excited, as much needs quiet and repose as a fractured limb or an in flamed eye, and it is obvious that the chances Offch iteniug the te'z'ire and ar rest ng the pun will depend on our power to: hate this carried out effectually. It is a practical ieson to Le kept steadily in view, in that there may ia-k behind a simple headache some kssm of unknown magnitude which may remain stationary if quietude can be maintained. There is a point worth attending to in the treatment of all headache. See that the head is e'evated at night, and the pil low h r for, if it is soft, the head sinks into it and becomes hot, which, with some people, is enough to provoke an at tack in the morning if s'eep has been long and heavy. Health Notes. Statistics preve that twenty-five per cent of the deaths in our larger cities are caused by consumption, and when we reflect that this terrible dis ease in its earlier stage will readily yield to a bottle of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup (costing 25 cents), shall we coudemn the sufferers for their negligence, or pity them for their ignorance? Daily WILMINGTON, N. C, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 1879 NO. 48 Meeting of the Presbytery. The Wilmington Presbytery will meet at 8 o clock this evening, at the Second Presbyterian Church, and will probablv continue its session during, the week Tnere w.ll probably be preaching .' ver niht during the s ession, and a cordial invit iti.n is given to the public to attend North Carolina Minstrel. Sbrter renew their ad vertising contract with us to 'day and make their Spriag and Summer bow to our patrons in the regular advertising columns. It is with much pleasure that we can from a long acquaintance and ex tensive dealings with this house, testify to the fact that their goods are not only al ways of the best bu. are iavariably as represented. They have built up an ex cellent business here and they deserve the success they have attained. Swearing in the New Police. The newly appointed officials and members of the police force were assem bled at the City Court room yesterday af ernoon, where Mayor Fishblate made them a short but eminently practical ad dress and, after designating those who were to be o day duty and those who were assigned to-night service, they were "sworn in," and signed the regulations. The present force is a good one, and we have no doubt that they will be faithful in the discharge of the duties imposed upon them. Thanks. We acknowledge with thanks the cour tesy of an invitation, from Messrs. T. C. Ethridge, Duval French and S. B. Leg gatt, committee, to attend a lecture to be delivered bifrs the Clarendon Literary Society, at the school-room of the Cape Fear Military Academy, on Friday even ing next, by Prof. Catle't, cm of the teachers iu that popular institution. The Society is composed of members of the Academy, with the object of mental im provement and cukure, and this lecture is to be given with that laudable design in view. Report of the Harbor Master. As Easter is approaching the follow ing will be of interest to the coming gen eration: "To color eggs a beautifu' crimson buy 5 cents worth of cochineal; put this to two quarts of water and boil the eggs in it. Another good coloring is logwood. You can also bronze them with common bronze used for shoes. To scratch figures on them use a quill dip ped in vinegar. Another way to color them is to sew brightly colored ribbons tightly around the egg, put a teaspooafnl of powdered alum in a quart ot water and boil the egg in it fer an hour or two. If the coUr is not deep enoagh. repeat tl e process." Whgle-ome and NdtbttioCS Bread. Intelligent housekeepers who use Doo ley's Yeast Powder there are thousands upon thousands who now use and have used it for the past twenty two years will not be misled by the false state ments of unscrupulous rival manufac turers as to its parity and wbolesome ness. They know by practical experience when they bay Dooley's Yeast Powder that they get one of the beet baking pow ders in the world; an article of perfect purity, of full strength and full weight; one which always makes light, whole some and nutritions biscuits, bread, rolls, muffins, corn-bread, waffles and cakes of every kind. Mr. Brown has been connected with the troupe fer several months and has been on a brief visit to his friends in this eity. He joins them again in order to complete his engage, ment with the company. It has been said that his personation of Capt. Corcoran is one of the best, on the stage. Our Fire Department Brother Pitt man, of the Newborn Nut Shelf, who was hero last week, has this to testify of in regard to our splendid fire department: . The Wilmington Fire Department is probably the most efficient in the State, and this fact is mainly because there is a company in the Department which uses a Silsby Engine. Capt. Manning never retires at night before so arranging his clothing as to enable him to dress in one minute a ter the fir.it tap of the fire bell and on almost every occasion the Silsby engine has had a stream on a burning building in less than ten minutes from the first tap of the bell. We may not hope to have our Fire Department as effi cient as that of so large a city as Wil mington, but we believe when the Silsby engine is added to the Department its efficiency w.li be greatly improved.
