It affords us even more pleasure than it does our patrons to put de?i table goods on this market below their actual value as it increases our business and is really the chtapest system of advertising as well as the true policy of e tending any business. We are also offering great inducements in all our regular purchases and can with safety add that at no time have our facilities been equal to the present season, and we are deter mined to pat our regular stock of General Dry Goods on this market at a lower rate of per centage than ever before. She comes well recommended and no doubt will draw a good house. The indifference with which so many people regard a cough er cold is truly unpaidonable. These affections often lead to' consumption, and should be check ed in time by use of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. The young folks of the Thalian Ama teurs will present the beautiful little do mestic drama of "The Last Loaf at the Tileston.Upper Room this evening. How WiiUtsses are to be Paid It may be of general interest to state that an act was passed, at the session of the Legislature, stipulating that no wit ness in a criminal case shall be either sub poenaed or paid unless the clerk is re quested in writing by the solicitor or foreman of the grand jury to summon him, and providing that tickets of no' mere than two witnesses shall be taxed as witnesses for the Slate in misde meanors. This action was intended for the double purpose of economy as to costs of court and facility in the disposition of cased. Bonitz' Hotel- The Goldsboro Mdsenger says: The Bonitz Hotel in this town changed hands last week. Mr. Wtn Bonitz sold out his interest in the hotel to Messrs. Merrett & Bunting, of Wilmington, who declare it their purpose to continue it a first-class house. The gentlemen have had con siderable experience in hotel keeping, and we wish them suocss. Mr. Wm Bonitz contemplates putting up a ne brick building on his vacant corner lot, and will open a first-class restaurant. Daily WILMINGTON, N. C, Superior and Criminal Court. As the Superior Court and Criminal Court for this count v are both ordered to meet on the same day in the month of June, we understand fthat His Honor Judge Meares has under consideration the propriety of calling an extra session or special 'term which, the .law empow ers him to do. before that time. Rock. Spring: and Kock. Spring Water. The locaHon of the old, original and only genuine ' Rock Spring"aeems to be a matter of doubt in the minds of som of our oldest citizens, with the weight of opinion rather in favor of that which now bears that appellation near the foot 3f Chestnut street, in front of our office. While the matter is in doubt and uuder discussion, the Rock Spring of the pre sent day will continue to furnish its lim pid waters to the wayfarer and the milk man can there water his horse, as usual. Opera House Last Klsht. Frofessor Andeison gave a peilormance at the Opera House last evening to a small audience , but fu lly carried out his publish ed programme, both as to legerdemain and distribution of prizes. He performed neveralvery fine tricks and many simple but clever ones suitable for parlor amuse ments, the latter of which Le explained to the audience. Among the prizes distribu ted were $10 In silver, a bag of flour .hams, package s of tea , crockery and glassware, and other articles of use. Iheie was nothiDg pertaining to the "key ring or button gifts." Should he perform again in this city we think he would be greeted by a larger audience. Grand Gathering at Croon's Bridge In Pender County. On Saturday next (the 19th inst.) the good people of Duplin, Pender and Ons low counties will hold a Grand Ticnic at Croom's Bridge, on the Northeast river, in Pender oounty, in celebration of the passage ot the bill by the legislature for the construction of the Angola canal. Speakers from the different eounties are expected to be present to address the people. The fair ladies of Pender have interested themselves to make tta occa sion pleasant and agreeable. A list of marshals have also been selected and the airangements perfected by which the fes tivities of the day maybe enjoyed without annoyance or confusion. i Family Poisoned by Eating Honey. It is not more true that every flower has a thorn than that every sweet has its bitter. The sweetest honey is made by the bee from the most bitter 1 erbs and most dangerous plants and flowers. But like many of life's fleeting enjoyments this honey sometimes contains elements of de structive poison. This is verified in the following sad case that comes from an authentic source: Jack Bryant, (colored) iiving hear Asheton, in Pender county, went with two of his boys on Saturday last to cut down a bee tree near his house. The object was to hive the bees and to get a meBS or two of delicious honey. The end was accomplished in se curing a fine swarm of wild bees and more than enough of finely tasted honey of this spring's production to afford one meal of beautiful honey and honey comb to all the family. Feur of them eat of (the same. In less than two hours, and before medical aid could be obtained, the hearti est of the party was a corpse from eating tkis honey. His symptoms were those of virulent poison. He was a young man of vigorous constitution, and his suffrings were so excrutiating that death seemed to be a relief. The other three, Bryant and his wife and a younger son, suffered great ly and were in a very dangrous condition for many hours until relieved Vy Dr. Satchwell who had been hastily summoned. They manifested all the symptoms of poisoning. We have known and heard of cases of honey poisoning from eating new made honey early in the spring but of none so severe and immediately fatal as this. Let this memorable case of family pois oning fro.n eating honey stand as a mon ument of warning. Wild honey, as it is called, or honey made by bees that leave their domestic abode and lodge in hollow trees of the forests for homes, seems to be more generally of this poisonous charac ter than that made by beet in gardens and farm yards. This wild honey should never be eaten, agr should any honey ever be taken idttbearly apring k months Wait until the maturity of warm weather has rendered the honey safe to eat, before disturbing the hive. Review. TUESDAY, APRIL Attempted Robbery. About 2 o'clock Sunday morning an at tempt was made to rob the store of Mr. G o. L. Schutte, on the corner of Fourth an 1 Walnut streets. A clerk, who siep' in a room back of the store, was awakened by a noise at the back door and in looking out of the window'saw a man prizing at one of the panels' of the door, which he had klmott gotten out. Tne would-be rebber also saw the e'erk and did not stop to explain the object of his midnight visit. Complimentary Farewell- The grand ball complimentary to Mis A. Shrier, heretofore referred to as in tended to be given prior to her departure for Europe, will take place at Germania Hill to-morrow evening, undjr the follow ing auspices: Mr. A Weill, Master of Ceremonies; Messrs. Isaac Bear, M. Han stein, and B. Solomon, Floor Managers; and Mrs. A. Weill, Mrs. D. KahnweLer, Mrs. A. David and Mr. H. Brunhild, Banqueting Committee. We learn that the affair is expected to be a very pleas ant and imposing one. The Peanut Growers. Mr. R. K. Bryan, Jr., Secretary of the Peanut Growers' Association of North Carolina, furnishes us with a list of the names of the Working Committee ap pointed at tbe meeting held in this city recently to ascertain the acreage and esti mated yield of the peanut crop for 1879. These gentlemen are requested to use all available means within their reach to further the object in view. The follow ing is the list: New Hanover A. A. Moseley, D. M. Fennell, W. J. Eonett. Pender W. H. French, Jas. M. West brook, R. A. Corbett, J. T. Foy, G. E. Shepherd, N. Atkinson, Jas. Shaw, Eli Shiver, W. Player. Onslow Dr. E. W. Ward, Jere Spicer. Brunswick Dr. J. D. Bellamy. Murder at Laorinhnrg. We learn that on Saturday afternoon last, at Laurinburg, an altercition took place between Mr. D, J. Williams. mer chant, formerly of Duplin county, and Mr. H. Oglesby, who is under $300 bends for his appearance at the May term of the TJ. S. District Court, upon the charge of vio lation of the revenue laws. It seems that they had been driuking quite freely previ ous to the trouble between them, but eventually the difficulty was adjusted and apparently friendly relations were again established. At about 11 o'clock on Sat urday night, however, as Mr. WiJliams was iu the act ot closing up his store, Ogles by came up, and without a word of warn ing, deliberately shot him through the head, killing him instantly. Oglesby is described as a reckless desperado, and the people of Laurinburg are bitter in their denunciation of the cold-blooded dastardly act. The body of Mr. William's has been taken to Duplin county for interment. f Testrymen and Delegates. Corresponding Stcre ary Mrs. Wm. E. Springor. Treasurer Mrs. H. P. West. , Going Back Home The steamer A. P. Hurt took an un usually large freight up the river today, and we should judge that all the raftsmen and boatmen on the Cape Fear who w. re in the city to day also took passage for their homes. We were pleased to not:ce that many of the passengers were in a happy frame of mind and in the liveliest of spcrrits, induced possibly by the dis covery of the famous Rock Spring and the idea of again returning to ths joys of their homes. Rock Spring water, under certain peculiarly favorable circumstances, has a tendency to make people feel lively. Produce Exchange. Come to Grlef-On the Track of a Gang of Thiefs. This afternoon Officers Bunting at d Carr swooped down on the place of busi ness of W. H. Boyette, colored, wh.m they have been watching for some time past. It seems Boyette has been a gen eral utility man in the gang of thieves who infest this city and it was at his place of business and through his hands that stolen articles were disposed of Armed with a search warrant the above named officers went to Boyette's shop and searched the house and succeeded in finding a quantity of rchool books, bibles and a set of cooper's tools. To the out side world W. H. Boyette is known as a commission dealer of this city. Among the things captured were several letters from Northern firms, one of which spoke of Boyette shipping brass as iron and asked his reason for so doing. He is now lodged in jail, but will have a preliminary hearing before Justice Gardner on Thurs day. He is well known in police circles and has served out a term of two years in the Albany Penitentiary for forgery. When the Moonlight Club was in exis tence, Boyette corresponded with them regularly and when its leaders were ar rested several letters from him were found in their possession: The officers will doubt less succeed in nnearthing more stolen plunder in a day or two and possibly capture some of Boyette s pals. The books which were recovered to-day are supposed to be those stolen from the school houses which were rebbed a few months ago,an account of which appeared in the Review at the time.
