Offi ers Banting and Carr have dis played a commendable amount of energy and shrewdness in ferretting out the gang of thieves which has just resulted in the arrest of W. H. Bjoyette. We think these officers deserve the thanks of the community for the zeal shown by them in the cause, but we would suggest that inasmuch as the fees in the case amount to little or nothing, some thing a shade msre tangible from the School Committee or County Commis sioners would show a better apprecia tion of the services performed. Harper, her commander, tells us that she digs out abou one hundred yards of sand a day. The Woodbury is now in this port having some work done on her shoes which have not worked as !well as they were expected to do. Pilots think there has been some change for the better in the depth of water on the bar. The Woodbury has only been at work a little over two weeks and it is thonght that as soon as the necessary . alterations are made to her shoes much better results will accrue. Professor Anderson and Miss Grey. Professor Anderson and Miss Grey gave a very pleasing little entertainment at the Opera House last evening, hut as on the previous night their audience was small. The entertainment was opened with sleight of hand tricks by Prof.Ander 3on. As a magician we look upon him as being well up in his business. Miss Grey lectured on Spiritualism, spoke of its progress, and commenced her illustra tions of the "powers of spiritualism" by "mind reading," then gave cabinet scenes and wound ap by exposing to the view the audience three "ghostesses." As a spiritualist she is a failure but is a clever legerdemain artiste. Her "mind reading ' wa3 simple and easily understood and would have taken much better with the audience had she told them that it was only a trick which she would clever ly perforin Yellow Fever. We are under obligations to Dr. J. C. Walker, "Superintendent of Health for the City of Wilmington, for the following cir cular relative to the recent cases of yel low lever on board the United States steamer riymoulh, from Dr. J. B. Ham ilton, Surgeon General U. S. Marine Hos pital Service: The Surgeon tteueral of the U. S. Navy has furnished the foliowiug facts in regard to the recent outbreak of yellow tever on the U. S. Steamer Plymouth. On Nevern. ber 7 h last, four cases of yellow fever oc curred on board the vessel while lyiug in the barber of ciautayOuz; these were re moved to the hospital on snore and the ship sailed for Norfolk. Three mild cases occurred during the voyage aud the Plymouth was ordereto Portsmouth, N. H , thence to Boston. At the latter port everything was removed frem the ship and all parts of the interior freely exposed to a temperature which frequently fell below zero, the exposure continuing for more than a month. During this time the water in the tanks, bilges, asd in vessels placed in the store rooms was frozen. 100 pounds of sulphar was barned below decks, this fumigation contiuning for two days, and the berth decks, holds, and store rooms wero thoroughly white washed. On March the loth, the ship sailed from Boston southward; on the 19tb, during a severe gale, the hatches had to be battened down and the berth deck became very close and damp. On the 23 1, two men showed decided symp toms of yellow fever, and on the recom mends ion of the Surgeon, the vessel was he ided northward. The sick men were isolated, and measures adopted for im proving the hygienic condition of the vessel and orew The Surgeon reported that he believed the infection to be con fined to the hull of the ship, especially to the unsound wood about the berth deck, all the cases but one having occurred with in a limited area; and that while the Py moulh is in good sanitary condition tor service in temperate climates, should sh be sent to a tropical station, probably no precautionary measures whatever would avail to prevent an outbreak of yellow " fever. New Inslgnias for the Police. The Mayor has just received by ex press from New York fifty-two neat and handsome new badges for the police force, including one for the Mayor and Chief of Police, each. The new badges, or shields as theyare called in the invoice, are larger than the old ones, with the words " Wilmington Police" on them surmounted by an eagle. The badge of the officers differsslightly from the privates having the words Sergeant,or Captain, in serted, as the case may be. The mayor's and the Chief of Police's are alike in the make up,the only difference being the title inscribed upon each badge. The two latter have the appearance of being. gld plated, but we have the Chief's word for it that they are solid;" the oth ;rs are silver plated in appearance. The old badges have been circulated so promiscuously around during four ad-min-strations and are now in the b.3Lli of so many who are not mem? ers f the police force that it was deem id necessary to change the style and adopt anew in signia altogether, as has been done. The W 1- T. The Wilmington Light Infantry held their usual monthly meeting at Armory Uall last night, and transacted the regu lar routine business. "Commission Merchant," Church Robber, School House Thief, etc-, etc., etc., etc. Officers Bunting and Carr carried an ¬ other dray load of books, etc., to. their office this morning, which were captured in a house in an alley, runn.ng through from Front to Second, between Market and Dock s reels, which were claimed ty "W-H. Boyette, Commission Merchant." Boyette is evidently a man of versatility of tastes, and among his plunder was found school books, Bibles, music, cate chisms, Sunday school books, a melodeon, dish-pans, stove, door-mats, clock, bel s household goods generally, and a fine water proof piano cover,1 which had been cut up and made into a coat. He was not bigoted in his religious belief, neither was be pre judiced in favor of or against the faith of any denomination, and that he visited all churches admits cf no doubt from the fact thiAt he had books belonging to all sects and creeds. He seems to have been a great student for be handled "his' bjoks very often, in writin his name through them, and if he perused the pages of the many 'Histories of the World' found in his possession, he is certainly the best posted mau iu the city as to the history oi the wcrld, begin ning at the creation of the same and running up to the prcseut da e. He is also a classical scholar and was anxious to find out Some of the truths contained in the Talmud as he had some half dozen catecnibms(wriUen in Hebrew)for the use of Jewish schools. Iu one of the books over the place where the owner's namel was written, was the foliowiug, which will show that he was a poetic child of nature. "This is the property of W. fl. Boy tte. You must not steal it for you have read the Holy Scriptures and it says: tnou shall not steal, and now think of that and don't steal this. Royal W U. Boyette." Some of the bib'es were identified as the property of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. The melodwOa was identified by Capt. W. R. Kenan as ene loaned by him some time ago for the use of the Union fcichool. The catechism 3 have bean claimed by the Temple of Israel. Books the property of St. Thomas' Church and Peabody school hive also been claimed. The clock, pjiano cover and some of the books are supposed to be thos3 stolen from the school roosa in the rear of St. James' Church. A number of teachers will assemble at Squire Garduer's office this afternoon to see if they can ident fy the books not already o'aime 1, and we are requested o say that any one who has lost property is invited to exam ine the plunder. A brand new cook stove, minus pots and pipe, is among the "scooped"' articles, also a tract entitled Wh-at is Fame WrLu?'' Wo can not answer the question without reflection but think Boyette 's fame will cost him several ears in the penitentiary. What is the use of a fellow's paying $150 for a phonograph, when 00 in vested in sweets and peanuts, and 50 lbs of lint cotton in the fall, for a marriage certifiicate, will give you a life lease on a talking machine that never requires any tin foil on the cylinder escapement 7 Yoang men, these are times for the prao tice of economy.
