Colville & Co. If this is "winter lingering iu the lap of spring," we would suggest that it has lingered long enongh. We cjuld hope that spring might have; some sort of a chance before summar comes along, but it seems as if that pleasure is to be denied White corded Piques worth 8 cents 5 cents at Habn's Fourth street f If your garden fence is out of repair your neighbor, who keeps hens, will com plain that he cannot keep his poultry at home on account of the bad I fence, but get it repaired or a new one bnilt and the complaints will cease, although the bens will get into the garden with their usual partinacity anj away goes all the early cicumbers and other garden truck. - -I ' Colored Alpacas worth 25 cents 15 cents at Harm's Fourth, street. f Some Chickens. We are informed thit our friend, Mr. F. A. Newbury, shipped one load of poul try from his store on North Water street to-day which numbered one hundred: and forty-one chickens. They were all sold at 30A cents each. A Golden Wedding The flags over the Imperial Consulate ia this city, as well as those on the vari ous German vessels in port, are flying today in honor of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary, the Golden Wed d ng, of the venerable parents of Mr. E. Peschan the German Consul at this port, 'which takes place to-day at Oaxi haven, Germany. Mr. Peschau's father is 81 years old and his month 75. The love and filial duty of Mr. Peschau has baen flashed to them to-day over the At Untie cable. This is the warmest day we have 1 yet had during the month of April. City Court. I David Mallett, colored, charged with disorderly conduct, was sentenced to pay $10 fine or serve fifteen days in the city prison. Judy Ann Hunter, a colored wench from Paddy's Hollow, who is a frequent attendant at the bar of the Mayor's Court, was fined $10 for being drunk and disorderly on the streets. The fine was paid and the defendant walked out and is now ready for another raw when the occasion offers. Sunday School cencert. We are informed by Capt. W. M. Parker, the Superintendent, that the Sun day School connected with the Front Street Methodist Church will give a concert, principally of Sunday School soags, oa the evening of Taesday. the 29h iast. The mutio will be under the direc tion of Mrs. Sallie Poisson, tbe organist at the Front stieet Church, and Mr. U. M Bowden, and will be selected mainly from the ' River of Life," a new and favorite Sunday School song book. From all that we csn understand a mtrstcal t rest i of nnnsus 1 iaterest is to be prevented to our people. Fuller particu'ars wi'l be made known in a few d tys. State Tax for 1679 Our present Revenue Act levies on the one hundred dollars valuation the follow ing tax for the present year: For general purposes, 12 cents; for In sane Asylum, etc, 6 cent; for Penitenti ary, 6 tents; total 24 cents. The School tax levy, 8$ oen's, remains the same as formerly. The levy for State purposes tb'g ear is 5f cents less on the one bun dred d ..liars valuation than was levied tor the year 1878.- Piaik CasUmerei worth $1 00 75 cents at Hahu's, Fourth street. f On Vive tn Chute. Quite au amusing Tfttie incident occur red in one of our city churches yesterday, was during the services end a gas jet whs burning in the organ loft for the con venience of the organist. One ef David's Micceaaors a bani-ist, while bending over a s nymnbook got his head too near tbe gs jet and the eonseqaence was a sput of flame aboat a foot high. The young man was very much in love with a lady in the congregation at whom and to whom and for whom he had been singing and the singeing was, therefore,en very inflam mable material. A lady chorister who was near at baud, seeing the flames dropped her book and by a few vigorous slaps with her hands, crushed out the fire. The alarm did not become general and the department was not catted oat. B vack Cashmeres worth 60 cents 35 cents at Hahn's, Fourth street. f Skipped It has been an open secret fur several days past that I. L. Dolby, for some time past proprietor of the Empire House, in this city, had skipped tbe town. It is sajd that he raised several thousand dol lars, by various means, before he left here, among others by a mortgage for $1,000 on the furniture and fixtures in the House, and that he owes numerous ac counts, which he fergot to py. Of these there is one grocery bill for $350 and another for some $800. It is said that Dolby first went South and that he pass el here last Saturday night going North, oj which occasion he was joined by Lis wife. No effort was made to detain him by any one of the parties to whom he was indebted. He skipped successfully aid has gone to seek new fields and pastures a ad pebple green. Lonsdale Cambric wir.h 15 cents 10 cents at Hahn's, Fourth street. Resignation Withdrawn. Rev. Geo. Patterson, D. D., Rector of St. John's Cburcb, who had tendered his resignation to the Vestry, first to the members of the old Vestry, who had de clined to accept it, and afterwards to those eVcted on Easter Monday, was in duced to withdraw it and on yesterday, after morning service, Mr. Henry Nutt, Chairman of a Special Committee from the Vestry who had been appointed to confer with Dr. Patterson, read to the congregation their report, setting forth the fact of their conference and the wel come intelligence that he had been induced to withdraw his resignation The result was ' very gratifying to the entire congregation, who t crowded around their beloved Rector with warm congratulations. It is only just and proper to say that Dr. Patterson s resignation was not the result of differences botween himself and his congregation. We are glad that he is to remain. , Calicoes worth 6 cents 4 cents at Hahn's, Fourth street. I Fashion Notes. Gold bracelets are very narrow snd have a locket or charms attached as a pen-. dant. 'Bandana' dresses of gingham, the checks a quarter of a yard wide, are among the new styles. Black straw hats are trimmed w th satin bows, black ostrich feathers, and gold tissue forming a ribbon Imported dresses, notably Worth's, are distinguished by their simplicity and pure and perfect elegance Summer stockings in lisle thread are embroidered with tall grass and flowers on the instep in natural colors. 'Bandmna' dresses do not take ' very well with refined and cultivated women, but colored (elks go into raptures over them. Low, gq a are-cat dfe&ses ef rich black silk or sating handsomely trimmed with "d eat., . th, It for evening wear. Smoked Sturgeon. Mr. John Carrollhas presented us with a samp1 of smoked sturgeon. Messrs. Wes'.brcok & Bros., of R cky P.inU made last week their last ship- "mentw radishes for the Keason. Thev sent them to Biltimore, pid 75 cents a barrel freight and got 50 cents a barrel fo the radishes. But they could afford to lose a little this time having realized so haaditomely on earlier shipments. Boyette the colored man who was ar rested a few days ago for stealing bcoks, etc., seems to have been making prepara" tions for counterfeiting. From las school house on the oorner of Twelfth and Dock streets, a quantity of acids were taken and are in tbe possession of the officers who arrested him. He is thought by sjme persons to be a little weak in hi upper s'ory, but there seems to be too much method about his 'Jittle tricks' to justify any such conclusion. Black Alpacas worth 30 cents 18 cents at Hahn's, Fourth strteef. f Magistrate's Court. Rev.
