Lost his Bat. A day or two ago a rustic loohiog man borrowed Master Bennie Cobb's hat to step out Jor a few minutes. The minutes lengthened into hours and hours into days and yet the man or fist has not been seen. Bennie was on the street yesterday with a double-bfrel shot gun and a pointer dog hunting for the man who stepped out for a few miuutes and who was, not as green as he seemed to be Boyish. Boys will be boys and boys of the pres ent age are no worse than boys were forty years ago, but yet boys are act always right in what they do. Boys, are in the habit of bending down the young trees on Market street, placing their hats on them and giving them a sail through the air for other boys to catch; and the b)y who catches it then gives his hat a sail through the air ia like manner. No doubt the game is an amusing one but what is fun to the boys is death to the trees. An eminent physician say s: "It is worth whi'e for common people to learn that 50.000 typhus germs will thrive in the circum ference of a pin bead or a visible globule. It is worth while for them to note that these germs msy be dessicated and borne like thistle seeds, everywhere, and like demoniacal possessions, mayjurnp noise lessly djwn the throat. But there are certain things spores cannot stand accord ing to the latest ascertained results of science. A water temperature of 120 de grees boils then to death, and soap chemically poisons them. Here sanitary and microscopic science come together. Spores thrive in low ground and under, low conditions of life. For redemption, fly to hoAiisdTse who lire in danger of malarial noisoniug. The Picnic at Crooin s Bridge. Through the politeness of Capt. Bisby, of the stiamer Clinloti, we learn that the picnic, at Croom's Bridge, in Pender county, on Saturday, the 19th inst., was quite an enjoyable and successful affair. It is estimated that there were between 400 and -500 people, of both sexes, and of all ages and conditions of life, present during the day. Bisby made two excursion trips with the Clin'on from Ormsby's Bluff to the pio-nic grounds, during the day, which were free to all who desired to at tend. In this connection we desire to tender our thanks to Captain Bisby for the courtesy of the offer of a free ride on the Clinton whenever business or incli nation should tempt us to brave the perils of the deep on the waters of the raging Northeast river, a courtesy which we appreciate and of which we shall avail ourselves whenever opportunity will per mit. .
