spared neither trouble or time in order to ac
complish our object. It affords as even more
pleasure than it does our patrons to put deal

the chtapest system of advertising as well as
the true policy of extending any easiness.
We are also offering great inducements in
all our rfgular purchases and can with safety
add that at no time have our facilities been

Lost his Bat.
A day or two ago a rustic loohiog man
borrowed Master Bennie Cobb's hat to
step out Jor a few minutes. The minutes
lengthened into hours and hours into days
and yet the man or fist has not been seen.
Bennie was on the street yesterday with
a double-bfrel shot gun and a pointer
dog hunting for the man who stepped
out for a few miuutes and who was, not
as green as he seemed to be
Boyish.
Boys will be boys and boys of the pres
ent age are no worse than boys were forty
years ago, but yet boys are act always
right in what they do. Boys, are in the
habit of bending down the young trees on
Market street, placing their hats on them
and giving them a sail through the air for
other boys to catch; and the b)y who
catches it then gives his hat a sail through
the air ia like manner. No doubt the
game is an amusing one but what is fun
to the boys is death to the trees.

A Board or Health -
Those who are at all afraid of epidemic
disease may feel comforted on hearing
that one of the best protective measures
they can resort to ia a very simple one
the use of soap and water. An eminent
physician say s: "It is worth whi'e for
common people to learn that 50.000
typhus germs will thrive in the circum
ference of a pin bead or a visible globule.
It is worth while for them to note that
these germs msy be dessicated and borne
like thistle seeds, everywhere, and like
demoniacal possessions, mayjurnp noise
lessly djwn the throat. But there are
certain things spores cannot stand accord
ing to the latest ascertained results of
science. A water temperature of 120 de
grees boils then to death, and soap
chemically poisons them. Here sanitary
and microscopic science come together.
Spores thrive in low ground and under,
low conditions of life. For redemption, fly

The Picnic at Crooin s Bridge.
Through the politeness of Capt. Bisby,
of the stiamer Clinloti, we learn that the
picnic, at Croom's Bridge, in Pender
county, on Saturday, the 19th inst., was
quite an enjoyable and successful affair.
It is estimated that there were between
400 and -500 people, of both sexes, and
of all ages and conditions of life, present
during the day. The very best of feel
ing was manifested and the best order

vities of the occasion. The tables were
spread with a bountiful supply of every
thing that could please the appetite or
satisfy the hunger of those in attendance.
Speeches were made by W. T. Banner-
man, Esq, Clerk ofthe Superior Court of
Pender, and others, all of which were
appropriate to the occasion, and which
were highly appreciated bythe listeners
Capt. Bisby made two excursion trips
with the Clin'on from Ormsby's Bluff to
the pio-nic grounds, during the day,
which were free to all who desired to at
tend. In this connection we desire to
tender our thanks to Captain Bisby for
the courtesy of the offer of a free ride on
the Clinton whenever business or incli
nation should tempt us to brave the perils
of the deep on the waters of the raging
Northeast river, a courtesy which we
appreciate and of which we shall avail
ourselves whenever opportunity will per

I It is with groat regret that we ieirn of
the distress which has overtaken the
Raleigh Observ.r, its editor and proprie
tor, Mr. Hale, having been compelled to
make an assignment for the benefit of
the creditors of his p riper. The trans
fer was made yesterday. Mr. T. J Rob
inson is named as the assignee and he
will continue the publication of the p.. per
for thirty d ays. in h pes of effdeting a
private sate aunng mat uraa. railing in
which he will offer it at public auction.
The assignment, i overs everything except
Mr. Hales half intere t iu tue pub

Ejsq., is a preferreJ creditor
to the amdont bf j-4,000, and the ballance
to be realized, if any thing, is to be divided
among the other creditors, pro rata.
We do not know the extent of tne
Observer's liabilities but they are prob
ably very large. We heard some months
ago that they were not less than $20 000
bat this may have been mere surmise
We do knew, however, that one of the
t newspapers ever pub.ishen
in
the Soathem States, and a strong and
earnest and unwavering champion of the
interests of the people of North Carolina
has been compelled to yield to the strin

Rdeijfa Observer the people of North
Carolina bhve suffered a terrible loss.
