A Sorrowful Anniversary. .This is the anniversary of the first battle of t he Wilderness, fought on the 2d day of May, 1803, and the skirmish battle tha w is preliminary to the grand contest at Chancellorsvide, which t ok place on the following day, Sunday, the 3d of May. It was in this great engagement or the plan for it that the Napoleonic genius of the great Stonewall was more apparent proba blythau in any i f his many brilliant and successful military achievements during his short ctreer. With a greatly inf rior 1 ree General Jackson maneuvered and out witted the Federal General Hxkerto such an extent, with a small portion of his com m ai id .as ' o make his antagonist believe that Le's army was in full retreat towards Richmond, while in very fact Jackson with most of his corps was making rapid strides for the rear of Hooker 'a army, which be succeeded in reaching about o'clock ou the afternoon of the 2d of May, and at 5.30 o'clock, the great chieftain had s j dis posed of his command as to move forward ia three lines of battle to the attack Im agine ths surpi ise and consternation of the enemy and the detailed oxks who were cooking their day's ratio us f r the On to Richmond Army away in the rear, to re. eeive an attack in that quarter frcm the enemy whom their commander had tele g aphed to Washington at being in full re treat towards Richmond. The victory for the Confederates was overwhelming and darkness atone pre. Tinted Jackson from annihilating or cap turing Hooker's en ire army. They con. quered, bat Boz trris fell, bleeding at every vein." It was indeed a victory dearly bought by the Confederates, for on that eventful night, sixteen yearn ago, Stonewall Jackson, in attempting a r eonnoiaance of the ene my's position received the wounds which ter j mated his earthly career, and caused the light of the Confederacy to flicker and waaa aad finally fau. go .eut in utter darkness. Radcliffp, the contractor, began work day before yesterday on the first of the new fire cisterns to be con structed by him, wh'ch is located at the corner of Fifth and Chestnut streets, and whioh is to hold 600 barrels. The work is progressing rapid 'y, the sides, which are ofpress3d brick, being already raised some two feet above the foundations. When this is completed Capt. The Mail Robbers James Davis and Charles Williams, the two colored individuals who, Davis claims robbed the U. S. mails while in transit from one train to another at Charleston, were taken from jail and carried to-day before U. 8. Commissioner, McQuigg. The defendants were held in defanlt of bonds of $600, to await the orders of the Judge at the District Court to tejheld here next week, when they will prebably be seat to Cnarle ton for trial in the district where the offense is alleged to have occurred. Nobody knows as yet anything relative to the robbery, which can hardly be that which was investigated yesterday, but the defendants will be accommodated with a full hearing of the case. May Day with the colored People The colored people of this city held a picnic at Hilton yesterday , at which there were games of b se-ball, walking matches, dancing and lots of other kinds of t in of the most pleasant kind, with no drunken ness or fignting to mar the festivities of the occasion, and the sports of the day terminated as orderly and peaceably as could be desired. The mabh game of base-ball was between the 'Red Stockings,' composed of men, and the Wilmington Mutual,' composed of boys, and was well contested, both nines playing with energy and skill. The game was to have consist ei of ten innings, for a prize of a new bat to the winner. At the conclusion of the ninth inning, however, theRed Stockings' concluded to yield the prlzs to the 'Mu tuals,' without playing. The score stood at the close of the ninth inning, 'Red Stockings,' 11 ; 'Matuais,' 10. As the game was left in that condition, both sides may very appropriately claim the victory.
