Railroad, and son of Mr. George Hall, who was for some years the master ma chinist on the same road, was instantly killed on Saturday evening, the J7th inst, at Cartersville, on the W C. & A. R. R. between Florence and Columbia, Ho was engaged in running a steam grist mill when the speed was such as to cause one of the millstones to burst from the cen trifugal force, a fragment of which struck him on the side of the head, causing in stant death. The deceased was about 28 years of age and leaves a wife and one child. Suspension of the San. Yesterday's issue of the Wilmington San did not appear, but instead, the fol lowing circular slip from the office of tha paper was sent out : The Wilmington Sun. ) Sunday Morning, May 18, 1879. J ANSOUNCEMEMT OF SUSPENSION. The &un will appear no more, at least under the present mranagemtnt. The editor dees net conceive it to be necessary to make further explanation than the following: It was intended to continue publication. The paper would have been sustained. The means with which to conduct it would have been forthcoming. But for reasons which need not be publicly stated, but which will be given to our friends and all who are interested in the failure, its Editor decided upon suspension as the wisest and most honorable course to pur sue. The editor of the Sun has heard that there were certain rumors in circulation affecting the conduct of the paper under him. He has learned that it has been industriously not to say, insidiously reported in this commuuity that there were personal influences exerted upon the paper such as would in the very nature of things derogate from its true independ ence. The Sun has never been influenced in the slightest degree by any person whatever. Its editor alone has shaped its policy. He alone has been response ble for its course on all questions. He alone would be responsible were it to con tinue to be published. Cicero W. Harris. Our respectful sympathies are tendered Mr. Harris, and all concerned, in their distress. Ample experience has demon trated the fact that the field is not large enough for the cultivation of turee daily papers. The place will, perhaps, support one morning and one afternoon paper and more than this is crowding the market to such an extent that disaster and rain are sure, sooner or later, to overtake some ono. The first issue of the Sun appeared Oc tober 22d, 1878 and the last on the 19th inst. Its existence therefore dates but a few days less than seven months and during that period, we are free to say, it has fought a steady, earnest aud disci plined fight in favor of the principles of a pure Democracy. American Wines. But few persons are aware of the great amount of grapes raised in New Jersey Alfred Speer is known to be the Urges, wine grower east of the Rocky Mountainst His Port Grape Wine is the best, and is considered by physicians and chemists as the best wine to be procured. It is or dered to London and Paris, where it is becoming very popular among wealthy families. For saw by J. C. Munds, P. L Bridgers k Co and Green Planner Apl. l-2w i i Review. MONDAY, MAY 19, Uniform or Postal Officials. A clause having been inserted in the p-Mtal appropriation bill of March 3, 1879, providing that postal clerks, rou e agents and mail route messengers sha'l not be required to wear a uniform other than a caper badge, the Postmaster General, in view of the advantages of a uniform to the service, ha9 issued a circular recommend ing those officials to continue, of their own free wili, to wear the entire uniform here tofore required. The Second Regiment. An election is to be held in Charlotte to-morrow to fill the vaoaucy caused by the resignation of Col. Alexander, of the Second Regiment, N. C. S. Q. It is likely, we think, that Iit-Col Worth will b promoted to the vacancy and that Maj Liles will will be made Lieutenant-Colonel, this leaving the position of Major to be filled from the line officers of the Regi' ment. Lieutenant Thos C. James, of the Wilmington Light Infantry, and Lieutenant J. D. Nutt, of the Whiting Riflss, expect to attend from this city. The Alleghany Springs. We invite attention, to the advertise- r ment of the Alleghany Springs, Mont gomery county, Va., as it appears in tbis issue. It will be seen that the manage ment of the Springs this season is in the hands of Mr. C. A. Colboun, a veteran in the business, and one who well knows and is able to provide for the comfort of his guests. The accomodations at the Alleghany are first class in evory respect, and the hotel is supplied with every comfort and modern improvement and convenience. The healing qualities of tie water are well attested and the rates for board are moderate. Circulars, with full iaformation onjall points, will be furnished on application. Attempt at Arson. Saturday evening, about dusk, an at tempt was made to burn the stables on the farm of Mr. Samuel Blossom, abott nine miles from this city, on the Rocky Point road. A stack of lodder which was close against the stables was fired, bi t was discovered by Mr. Blossom's daughter who gave the alarm in time to save i The stables are situated about one hun dred yards from the dwelling and as the servants and members af Mr. B's. house hold ran out to extinguish the fire the house was entered and robbed of a gold watch, two chains and some jewlery Peter Bloom, colored, who was suspected, was arrested Sunday morning about 2 o'clock and is now in jail. Bloom impli cated another colored man, though a? there was no evidence against hi.n save Bloom s word he was released. The prisoner strtes that they had decided upon a line of procedure to rob the house which was as follows: Fire the stables and attract the attention of the neighborhood to the burning building and then make a clean sweep of the valuables of the house For the Review Ladles' Benevolent Society. Not willingly, but of necessity, the President feels called upon to make a plain statement of the present condition of this Society, which for more than thirty years has been active in dispensing aid as opportunity and means enabled us, te the sick ar J needy around us. In latter years it has become common for gentle men to send strangers to the President or Visitors for such aid This was not the original purpose of the organization, which at first restricted its operations to the poor of the community in sickness or some other great trouble. The amoant required for membership was placed very low, in the hope that none would find excuse for failing to spare from dress or indulgence $1 00 annually less than two cents a week for sustaining tbis branch of the Lord's Treasury. In this we have been disappointed, and now we deem it proper to let it be known that since the war the number subscribing has never exceeded, and hardly ever reached, one hnndred, while the amount distribu ted (enlarged often by generous dona tions) has sometimes been more than $200. Tbis year we have but sixty-one subscribers on our list and lower donation in money than usual. Consequently, after settling bills for April, we find ourselves with just $5 remaining in the Bank. And now it is right that we shorn! d say, with many thanks to the donors, that nearly all the provi ions distributed by us during the last three mentbs have been the gift of one firm (well known for its liberality) whom delicacy forbids us to name here; and it is oaly through their bounty we have whersm h to meet the claims, this month, of those whose neces sities drive them to us. Might we venture to add the request that some of the gentlemen who read this will aid us by their wiser counsels, indi vidually or otherwise, as to some suitable means of replenishing our treasury ? The summer is before us, and necessities may then be more argent. Several solicita tions for a Lecture ou this behalf have been unsuccessful, yet we feel assured that the Lord Poor will be fed. May 17th, 1879. PfifiiDKNT. 1879. NO. 87 Hook and Ladder Anniversary. The members of Wilmington Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1, will cele brate the anniversary of their company to-morrow. There will be no public parade, but a supper will be given at Hook and Ladder Hall which will be at tended by the members and their invited guests. We thank Messrs Albert Gore, James Groves and W. M. Uowey, the Committee, for an invitation to be pre sent on the happy occasion. Personal. Our good triend and, for many months past, genial local cotemporary of the Sun, Wade H. Harriss, Esq., called in to day to bid us goodbye. He leaves this evening on the C. C. Railway train for his old home in Concord. He speaks of reentering journalism in the Fa'l and we hope that he may. During our seven mouths of inter coarse we havo learned to esteem a d almire Mr. Harris very highly and lo will carry with him, wherever he goes, many warm wishes from our city by the sea for his future success.
