We have heard Mr. Canaday's address generously -approved by a number of those who read it in yesterday s Review as well as by some who heard it at the Cem etery. A happy crowd and it was by no means a small crowd of old and young folks went down the. river 'this morning o i the excursion given on the Passport given by Prof. Agostfnt. We understand that Rev. Geo. Patter s n, D. D., of this city, will preach the Sarmon at the Commencement of St Marys School in Raleigh, on the first Sunday af ter Trinity, the 15th of June. The Journal of Industry. We were pleased to receive a call this morning from O. Personal Under this bead yesterday's Raleigh Observer says: Gov. Robinson returned from Wilmington and the East yesterday. The people of tbe East have waited for an opportunity to testify their apprecia tion of the sturdy stand he has. always taken for their rights and to express to him their warm personal regards His hearty recognition of their partiality and his genial manner I in describing his trip is evidence sufficient that his visit has been a succession of friendly greetings and kindnesses. "The Cottage by tbe ties.' ' As will be seen by a glance at our ad vertising columns Mr. C. C. Morse hss erected three new and convenient cottages at Gieenville Bound, which be offers for rent on reasonable terms. Parties de siring pleasant residences during the hot summer months would do well to call either upon Mr. Burkhimer, who has the matter in charge, or Mr. Morse, the p oprieter. Whitsuu-Day. The Festival of Whitiun-day, known as such in the Roman Catholic and Epis copal Churches, occurs to-morrow. This festival falls due ten days after the As cension of Christ and corresponds with the Jewish Pentecost, or tbe iftieth d.y after the Passover. We are told that ti e Holy Ghost descended on the Apostles in the shape of tongues of fire and that it was to "teach the Apostles; and to lay all things to their remembrance." Tbe name of the day comes to us through the German, Pentecost in that tongue being Pfingsten, wbenceWbingsten and Whitsun. Many erroneously believe that it was origi nally White-Sunday and that it became abbreviated to Whit-Sunday Tbe Lecture or Modern Egypt. General Colston, at the Opera House last night, in his lecture upon Modern Egypt, introduced his subject by an ex pression of pleasure at his return to tbe city of Wilmington, where a portion of his life had been most pleasantly passed. He then speke of Ismail Pacha, the present Khedive, and his ancestry, Ibra ham Pacha and Mohammed Ali. He de scribed the present Khedive as a man of hig h character and possessing great in tellectual attainments. Ia his dress, manners and personal habits the Khedive is thoroughly English. He also gave an account of the sons of the Khedive, joe of whom is general-in-chief of the Egypt ian forces, but who has never won an en viable distinction as a military genius. General Colston gave many interesting traditions of tbe Egyptians of ancient times, and a somewhat detailed account of tbe habits, customs and social relatious of that people at the present day. The laws of divorce are very liberal and inex pensive, the only act necessary being to declare themselves divorced. The parti s thus divorced may marry again at pleas ure, and there is no impediment to their coming together and assuming again the relations of husband and wife. This tbey may do three times, after which the wife, must not marry her former husband un til she has married and been divorced from tome ether husband. Chicago editors would do well to make a note of this. The lecture last night was illustrated by stereoscopic views and also by photo graphs of some of the most prominent and distinguished men of Egypt of the present day. Space will not permit us to give more than this very brief synopsis of the very entertaining and instructive lecture, but we learn that the General has quite a number of others prepared upon the same subject, and we hope he may be induced to deliver one or more of them. His op portunities for observation, while in that country, were abundant, and it would be a rich intellectual treat to listen to his relations of Egyptian experience. The Sunday School connected with the Frat Presbyterian Church of this city made an excursion on the W. C. k A. Railroad to Lake Waccamaw this morn ing. Tbe crowd was quite a large owe, all bent on a day of pleasure and recre ation, and we doubt not tbey will pass tbe day in i n nocent end healthful enjoyment Positive superlative warmest day of the Review.
