The apostolic rite of confirmation was anmioistered at St. Joun a Church last night, Whitsunday, by Rt. Rev. Bishop Atkinson. The candidates for con fir ma tion were six males- and two females. Suggested. It has been suggested that a musical concert be given in this city tor the benefit of t'be indigent poor. We heartily endorse the suggestion and hope some one will take the matter under consideration. It is a fact too well known that the efforts of the Ladies' Benevolent Association are uot properly appreciated by the citizens generally. The association has volun tarily taken upon themselves this labor of love and with their small means g adden the hearts of many widows, and fatherless children. We understand that the Treas ury of the organisation is depleted and that many of the poor are suffering for want of the necessaries of life. Sudden Death. We are pained to learn of the sudden demise of an old and esteemed citizen of Brunswick county in the person of the feev. W. M. D. Moore, which occurred at the village of Summerville in the above named county between 2 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. We have been un able to learn the full particulars of Mr. Moore s death, but understand that the venerable gentleman was just preparing to attend his Sunday School when he wa8 stricken by the cold iron hand of death and fell to the floor speechless, dying al most instantly. The doctors, we learn, pronounced the disease paralysis of the brain. The deceased was sixty-six years ot age at the time of his death and had been in the ministry ef the Methodist Episcopal Church for the period of forty years. Mr. Moore at one time filled the responsible position of Clerk of the Coun ty Court of Brunswick. The deceased gentleman's only sin, Mr. Walker Moore a resident of this city, left here this morning for the village to attend the funeral obsequies of bis lamented father, Beard of County Commissioners The Board of County Commissioners met iu regular monthly session at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Items from W hltevilie. The closing exercises of the spring ses sion of Whiteville Academy were held on Friday the 30th ult. The sehool has baen under the tutelage of Messrs John son & Lovelace, who though young men, have manifested a thoroughness both in teaching and discipline. The services of the forenoon were very interesting, consistin ot recitations, dissertations and declama tions by the pupils. Miss Ellis, daughter ofCapt. JohnW. Ellis, of Whiteville, read an interesting "History of White ville Academy," from which we learned that the institution was founded in 1851 that the original stock holders were Col. W. M. Baldwin, Col. A. Lmith, Col. J. A. Maultsby, Jr., Col. T. S. Momory Dr. M. R. Morrison, Messrs, J. C. Pridgen, J. Thompson, W. Haynes and otheis. The building was erected under the supervision of Col. W. M. Ealdwin, and the first teacher was Mr. A. J. But ner, whose services were secured by Col. Forney George, then a law student under Judge R. M. Pearson. We rogrpt that apace will net permit us to name all the subjects treated upon by the youug ladies and gentlemen com posing the school, for they all evinced literary taste and very decided intellec tual powers. At noon an intermission ot an hour and a half was announced, and the teach ers, pupils and large concourse of friends present adjourned to the grove in whioh the Academy is situated, where in a few moments a tahle improvised for the occa sion was spread with a beautiful feast of good things to eat, while one hundred gallons of iced lemonade furnished a cool ing draught to the thirsty palate. The viands were abundant in quantity and varied and delicious in quality, and es tablished the fact that the housewives of Whiteville and vicinity are excellent cooks, and that her noble sons have a generous hearted hospitality. In this connection, and before we get back again to the school room, we must take occasion to say that we have seldom seen in a like eonoourse of people so many bright, intelligent, healthy-looking young ladies as were gathered around that table. They were all good looking, healthy look ing and bright looking, and there was not one among them but would make almost any man a better wife than he deserves. The in tei mission being over and phys ical hunger being fully satisfied, the mul titude re-assembled in the school room to partake of a rich intellectual .symposium in the shape of an address to the young ladies by that brilliant orator and gifted son of North Carolina, Col. Duncan K. McRae. It was the first time we ever had the pleasure of listen ing to him, and al though we were prepa ed , from the uni- versal opinion of those who had heard him, for an excellent treat, we confess that we were agreeably surprised at the peculiar beauty of his ekquence, the purity of his language, and the poetic wea 1th of his thought. The wisdom of his speech was intermingled with a spontaniety o wit, whioh at times carried the house ciptive in roars of laughter. His address was listened to with the profound atten. tion It richly deserved, and all were de lighted. The address concluded the services of the day, and the people dispersed to their several homes, happy in the thought of a day pleasantly and profitably passed. At Whiteville there is a tannery which has just commenced operations in which leather is prepared for use by a new pat ent which greatly expedites the tanning process. We were shown leather manu factured fby this process in two days, and the heaviest cowhides are tanned in about eight days The article principally used by this new process is Gambia, which is Imported from Hindustan. In conversation with, farmers ot the vici nity we learned that the crops are some what backward, but that there is rather a Urgei acreage both in corn and cotton than in previous years. There are other items of interest which we gathered during oor brief stay, but space compels us to leave them for another time.
