Rnbesonlati on the River. A correspondent who subscribes him self as ,,0ue Who Was There", and who is, by the 'way, "one of our city boys writes us a very interesting report of the excursion on the rattport on Thursday which was so largely attended by the ladies and gentleman who came down the niffht before from Robeaon ' county. He writes: "It has never been our pleasure to at tend a more pleasant excursion or to meet so rrany clever people in a short space of time. 1 hH fair sex was representee: oy a bevy of beauties who were aa pleasant and interesting as they were pretty. The gentlemen were well, tolerable good lookine but they were exceedingly clever Miles Howard and baud furnished the music and the youug folks amused them selves dancinz. On the return trio ud the river the iib of the Passport was set and the little ft earner sailed traily up the river with its cargo of happy exeursioUdts who seemed to get the full measure ot enjoy ment out of their day's pleasure. Pickett, the Assailant of Maria Covington, Taken Suddenly 111. Sam Pickett, the colored man who was arrested for assaulting the colored woman, Maria Covington, a few days ago, J sud denly became speechless in the Guard House this mornlnz. but whether his apparent illness was feigned or real, it seemed hard to determine. The city phy sician beiDg called iu administered medi cine to him and applied remedies, when the prisoner commenced breathing; short and quick and ma whispering voice kept crying cian, "have mersy. lhe pnysi- we belie v. inclined, to the opinion that the prisoner was suffering from a violent form of hysteria brought on by religious excitement, Pickett having been indulging in shouting, and 80 forth, yesterday evening, claiming that he had suddenly been converted. He was in such a condition at the hour vet apart for his trial before the Mayor this morning that his case had to be continued until Monday morning at 9 o'clock. This afternoon there was no visible change in his condition; the short quick breathing is still kept up, while the man lies on his back flat on the lloor of the Guard Room, except when bis head is raised by the attendant to administer water or medicine, according to the directions of the Doctor, who by the way has spent a good deal of time in attendance upon this patient to-day. What seem most remarkable about the sudden illness of the pruoner is the fact that a very few minutje before thi attack of speechless ness came on he inquired of the Janitor what time his trial would take place and was informed tha in a few minutes the Court would open, and in a very few mWtes thereafter the Court did open, but Pickett seems to have shut op about the same time. There are a good many who at first thought the prisoner was playing "old soUlier," who now begin to think, perhaps he really is sick from the fct that what they thought was a sham has been kept up five eonsecutive hours without intermission. Some of the colored brethren think he is going off iu a trance. From a iriend just in town from Ons Iojv county we learn that the farms in Jacksonville township were visited with a fine shower oa Thursday evening last. The crops are looking finely and there is every indication that a good harvest will blees the labors ol the iarmers. SATURDAY, JULYi Body Recovered. I he body of the unfortunate young Swedish sailor who was drowned last night was recovered after it had been in the water a little more than two hours. Physicians were immediately summoned and every mens known to science was applied to effect a resuscitation, but with out avail. His name was John Edlund and it is stated that he was an excellant swimmer, from which it is inferred that in his descent his head struck against somethiug which rendered him helpless The funeral took place this morning the Captain, officers and crew of the Diana, to which the young man belong ed, all participating in the obsequies. The Nyce waa chartered to bring the body which had been placed ia a nice coffin and draped with the Swedish colors, across the river, from whence he waa conveyed to Bellevue Cemetery followed by the rugged but tender hearted crew.
