There, as in so many other sections, erery thing is parched well nigh onto death. If good rains do not come witkin the next few days there wilt b abolutelv no croos made at all this year. ! From Topsail. Maj. C. W. McClamayi from Topsail, Pender county, is in the city to day. Hi reports as regards the crops are rery gloomy. Everything seem goinf to nothinr and drvinir ud. fot the want of witer. Even with tbe best of rains now not more than half a crop of anything could bo realized and without rain there will be nothing saved worth speaking of. Tbe outlook is gloomy indeed. j Murder at Old Fort. . A friend and subscriber at Old Fort sends us the particulars of a homicide which occurred in that qaiet little town oa last Saturday Light! It seems that a pirty of four or five persens engaged in a game of cards in the open air at a place jvst below the village and by the side of the creek when two of them, Emanutl Rose and William Rogers, got into a dis pute over the cards, which broke up tbe game. The party then started for the village, the two continuing their quarrel, and when within a short dis ance of the depot Rogers dared Rose to come to him and fight it out fair A few blows passed between the two when Rogers fell to tbe earth and died in a few minutes. An examination showed that he had beon fearfully cat in three different places one on his left side, about 5 inches long and through to the hollow, oa in the pit of the stomach, and the third just below and under the arm pit either of which might prove fatal. Rose attempted to escape, but was caught and is now confined in jail awaiting his trial for murder. How Wa;lt Done On Saturday laf t,one of our Water street friends, having a pair of pantaloons some what the worse for wear, disposed of them to a colored man employed in the store of which he has the charge. I Accordingly thetlothing was wrapped and. tied op securely, and placed where the purchaser could get it when it came time to close up for the night. Late in the afternoon, and just before it was time to close the store, a colored man from tbe country a regular customer came in and made a small purchase, and soon after ha had left it was discovered that the pantaloons were among the missing, buspicicn at once pointed to the recent customer, and tbe purchaser of the clothing was sent in pur suit, and overtook him on Fomrth street, iust across the brides. The charge of theft was made and indignantly denied. A search was made and after finding one or two other bundles, the bundle of clothing was at last found in a bag. At this the thief was lost in am.zement, and wond ered how they could possibly hare gotten there, which is a conundrum he is proba bly only able to answer. 1 This Homines Fire. , j About half past 2 o'olock this morning, the alarm of fire was sounded. It was in tbe Fourth district and came from the grocery store of Mr. J. Ni Mohr, located on the Southeast corner of Church and Seventh street. ' Fortunately there was very little wind or else the disaster might have been a yery serious one. As it was it was confined to the locality where it originated. Tha tames were first discov ered issuing from Mr. Mohr's .store and they burned so fiercely that the building and the stock were entirely consumed be fore the engines could be brought to play upon them. Mr.Mohr's dwelling was within twenty-eight feet of tha burning store and this was saved, in a partially damaged condition, only through the ! strenuous exertions of the fire department. The fire seems to have caaght within the store but no one knows how it originated. Mr. Mohr was insured with Mr. Giles' Agency. lie had $1,000 on the stock in tbe Royal,, cf Liverpool, which will probably cover tbe loss. The building was worth about! $700 bat was insured for only $500, in the Pbceoli, of Hartford. - lie had also a policy of $500 oa bis dwelling, in the Phoenix, but the dam ages to this building will not, it is thought, exceed $100. Tjo department worked faithfully and the fire was well managed, a fact to which tbe neighbors bear grate ful testimony. Rev TUESDAY, JULY A Cariosity. sr air.; ueo. It. Bate, at Mr. T. H.
