New Coins.'
The new tfold and goloid. coins pro
posed to be made by the United States
Treasury, are thus described: The double
eagle $20 piece is an orange gold, in
color, and the most beautiful coin that can
be conceived. The golold dollar is an
equally beautifully finished coin, monen
tizing both gold and silver together as
bimetalic money; so that one metal can
not expel the other from circulation, but
maintaining gold and silver equally in
use, on an equal basis, or ratio of sixteen
to one, as a unit of the entire precious
metals. They are metric weights as well
as troy. . 1
I A Mastadon's Rib. j
Dr. W. J. Gilbert, of Fremont, has
sent us a section; of what is generally
supposed to be the ; rib of a mastadon.
This rib, whichj weighed 274 pounds and
was 8 feet in length and with a diameter
of 11 inches, was dug out of i the marl
pit on the land of MrJ Sasser, ; near Fre
mont, some ten feet below the surface.
It has been seen and examined by a great
many persona and the opinion seems to
be pretty general that it was once the rib
of a veritabla mastadon. The speci.nen
is at our office and may be examined by
the curious.
Prompt Payment.
We learn that the Liverpool & London
& Globe Insurance Company, through its
agents here, Messrs. Jno. W. Gordon &
Bro.,to day paid in full, without discount,
the claim of Mr. Richard Litgen, whose
stock, on the corner of Third and Orange
streets, ; was destroyed by fire on the
morning of the 8th inst. The proofs of
loss were forwarded by Messrs. Gordon &
Bro. on last Tuesday evening, thej. 19th
inst., and a ceck t5 cover the loss was
received yesterday morning, the 24th
inst. It is the rule with most companies to
take sixty days from receipt of preefs,or to
discount the claim at current rates of in
terest, but this company pays its losses
immediately on receipt of proofs, and
without discount; and to this fact, to
gether with that of its being the strongest
fire insurance company in the world, may
bo attributed, to a great extent, its great
popularity and success.
Towed into Port.
The German barque Marie, which
went ashore between the Rip and the Bar
during the recent gale, was towed up to
tne city yesterday by the steam tug
Blanche, and new is opposite the Caro
lina Central wharf anchored on a shoal
where at flood tide she w 11 float and at
low tide she touches bottom. This is
done to save the constant pumping which
would be necessary, owing to the leaks,
were the vessel anchored in deep water,
which is something of an item when w6
consider that it takes as many as forty
hands day and night to keep the vessel
afloat, at an expense of twenty cents an
hour to each band by day and ; twenty-
five cents an hoar for the night work.
i
Messrs. Pesshau & Wester mann, the
agents here, have not yet determined to
whom they will give the contract for re
pairing the ship, A surrey will first be
held by a board of competent persons to
determine the amount of damage to vessel
and the repairs necessary to be done.
Captain W. J. Pen ton has: the contract
for taking oat the balance of the cargo.

A Graceful Act.
We learn from the PortsmouthE'ftitirer
that Capt. Jno. M. Robinson, President ot
the Seaboard & Roanoke III Ii., has order
ed that the pay of the late W. W. Wey
mouth, the engineer who was killed re
cently while in the d ischarge of his duty
on that road, be continued to his widow
until the first of January next. The rail
road company will also pay all of the fu
neral expenses, and will erect a monument
over his remains, j This is certainly a very
commendable act on the part of Capt.
Robinson, and shows an appreciation of
faithful services 'which might well be
emulated by others.
Mr. Wej mouth was at one time well
known in this city, and was formerly
employed as an engineer on the 'Wilming
ton & Weldon R. R. He was the engineer
of the train which, during the war,ran into a
hand car on which was Hon. Wm. S. Ashe'
then President of the road, and which re
suited in the death of M; .Ashe. In this,
however, Mr. Weymouth was officially de
clared guiltless of blame. I

Appletons' Journal.
Appletons Journal for September
opens with the first part of a new novel
ette by Mrs Annie Edwards, whose
'Archie Lovell' and 'Ought We to yisit
Her?' are so well known to novel read
ers. The title of the new story Is 'Vivian
the Beauty;' the scene opens in Germany
with an English young girl, fresh and
captivating, an eccentric and well-drawii
Scotch female guardian, a German tutor
i i ;.
ana soon introduces Vivian, wno is a
spoiled 'Hyde Park goddess," as she is
described . The story opens well, being
vivacious, fresh and full of promise of
good points to come. It will be complete
in ; four numbers of the Journal. ) Of the
general papers, Karl Bliud's second paper
on 'Russian Conspiracies is probably the
most important. A third paper will be
necessary to complete the weird record
of oppression and insurrection, of murder,
arime and intrigue. There is a very in
ceresting paper by John Esten Cooke, en
titled 'An Hour with Thackeray relating
tn interview had with the! great novelist
in the city of Richmond. The just pub
lished 'Souvenirs of Madame Vigee Le
Brun' afford material for a gossipy, semi
histeric, semi-biographic piper. Char
lott i Adams describe, in glowingticts the
picturesque and strange aspeqts of a night
ia Venice. Mr. James Pay n writes amus
ingly and satirically of the absurd criti
cisms 'and ridiculous propositions that
certain would-be critics persecute pop liar
writers with. There ia an article; on
Anthony Trollope;.a paper comparing
recent French and Eng isn paintings, to
the advantage of the latter; the continua
tion of the Besant and Rice novel, 'The
beamy Side;' a reply to Matthew Arnold'
paper on 'Wordsworth which appeared
last month; and then comes the editor's
departments, in which new books are re
viewed, and comments made on current
topics. ' 1
