I A a ad AnniTersary To-day twelve months ago the citizens of Wilmington were called upon to mourn the death of a prominent citizen cf this place, Capt. I. B. Grainger, whose funeral; services were i celebrated iB St. John's Church in tbia city, on the 28th of August of last year, the remains having reached here on the cars the night pre vious from Pennsylvania, where Captain Grainger was visiting relatives at the time of his sudden illness and untimely dea h. Stolen Property Recovered. l A yawl boat belonging to the German barque Shanghai, lying at Messrs. Wil Hams & Murchison's wharf, between Orange and Ann streets, was stolen last night and taken, no one knew whither until the Captain offered a reward of two dollars for its recovery; when it was soon discovered lying near Messrs. Kidder & Sons' steam saw mill in the lower end of town, and conveyed back to the barque by two colored men, each of whom claimi ed the reward, his individual' self. ' Twice Stolen.! Charles Harper, colored, was arrested yesterday morning for the larceny of chickens, the property of Mr. Patrick Carr. Shortly after the theft was com mitted Mr. Carr missed his chickens and instituted a search for them among the hucksters in the market and came upon tbem just after Harper had sold them. He waa arrested, the money turned over to fhe purchaser and the chick ens to Mr. Carr, who sent them back to his hous? . Harper was remanded to jail in default of bond for his appearance at a preliminary investigation before a magistrate this morning. ' New Cotton. ! Messrb. Williams & Murcbison received by the 6 (o'clock freight train on the C. C. Railway yesterday afternoon from Mr. N. M. Gibson, at Laurel Hill, Richmond county, the first bale of new cotton that has been received in this market this year. The bale was weighed by Mr. Geo. H. Kelly, cotton weigher, and brought down the scales at 435 pounds. It was classed as middling cotton and sold for 12J cents per pound. Messrs E. Lilly & Bro. also received by the passenger train on the C; C. Rail way this morning a bale of new cotton shipped by Messrs. McCaskell & McLean, from Lauriuburg. The bale weighed 503 pounds and was classed as strict ! low middling. It will go forward on steam ship Benefactor to morrow or next day, fori New York, when it will be placed on the market for sale. The John A. Griffin. I We are glad to learn that the schooner John A, Griffin, concerning whose safety much anxiety has been felt in this city, since the recent storm j is safe. She ar rived off Smithville at about sunset last night and came to an anchor outside. She has laid.outside during the day, and will be brought in as soon as the tugs can bej spared to go to her. They have been busy during the day towing out the; fleet ot vessels that were at Smithville.
