War In the Hollow. i i The female denizens of the Hollow were on a rampage to-day. and indulged in too much red eye, and pugilistic amusement Mollie Dove and Carrie Walker were drinking together and finally came to blows. Tbe Herald says: On Monday afternoon, at about fi o'clock, we had a very heavy storm of wind and ram, but no serious damage was done, more than the prostration ot fences. etc., in this immediate vicinity. At Ansonville large trees were blown down, bat the main force of the . storm commenced at a point about one and a halt miles northeast of Wadesboro at the plantatioc'of Atlas Jowers where fences were leveled. The fences, many trees, and several out-houses on Wm. Garris' plantation were destroyed also his bug- gy. John j Williams, on tne adjoining farm, also lost heavily. He and his wife were standing in the passage of bis house and were blown out, some distance from the house. We learn that the storm caused great devastation on Dr. W. H. Battle's plantation, near Liles- ville blowing down many of those sturdy oaks about lte yajd near his dwelling, and levelling all his fences. There are reports of much damage about 1!. mint. : I XjiieeYUlo. ! We also learn that a great deal of hail fell in the northern portion of the county during the prevalence of the storm, doing great damage to cotton, eto. Unmallahle. One More Game - ' i .j ' A match of base ball was played yes terday afternoon between the Star Light and Young America Clubs, which result ed in a victory for the Star Light. The score was 28 for the first Lamed and 27 for the latter. Affray at the WhltHeld House. The Whitfield, House, a rival shanty of the Long House, on Surry, street was the scene ef a conflict this morning be tween Fanny Brewington, Sophia Hall, Tilla Hall, and Jane Hines, four colored women who were marched up to the City Hall under the escort M. James. But upon of officer Francis reaching the Hall, Captain Brock, Chief;' of Police learned that a warrant had already been issued by Justice Millis for the arrest of the parties, and they were consequently released from the custody of the city officer and imme diately arrested by a constable who cited the.n to appear at Justice Millis' Court at 3 o'clock this afternoon for trial. I I' a Sample Copy. We have received a copy of a paper which appears under the very significant name of "Man." It'is devoted to the dis i i emination of liberal and infidel ideas, 'and contains "a call for a Liberal Convention to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the 13th and 14th of the present month. Among the nam ps of those who issue the call we find Col. Robert G. Ingersoll, the I noted Infidel lecturer, James Parton, the u- thor, historian and free-thinker, Parker Pillsbury, one of the pioneers in the ant: slavery movement, and J. R. Mendum i ublisher of the Boston Investigator, a notoriously infidel sheet which delights in making a mockery of the Bible and its teachings. The paper came marked as a "sample copy," and we are satisfied it is a very fair sample of a very bad cause. Points in Etiquette Anonymous letters are beneath notice. Letters of introduction should ,te brief. "Yours, &c.,"fcis a rude ending to a let ter. 1 i - ' Say "Good-bye" and not "Good morn ing, i Never wait over fifteen minutes for a i tardy guest. , IX1 Upon introduction at once enter into conversation. Upon leaving a room one bow should include all. I ; ' A call should not be less than fifteen minutes in length. A note requires as prompt an answer as a spoken question. I Glazed cards and papers are not used, nor are gilt-edged ones. Genteel" and "gentility'' are words tabeoed in good society. J Strangers arriving should notify friends by card of their presence. Regrets in reply to invitations should contain the reason therefor. j At table you are not required to thank the one who waits upon you. Tou should exchange calls with individ uals before inviting them to your home. Only letters to unmarried ladies and widows are addressed with their baptismal name, - Tbe custom of leaviug a blank margin on the left hand side of each page of a let ter Is obsolete. ! The return of a personal call with cards enclosed in an envelope signifies that visit ing between the persons is ended. Unless there is great difference in age a lady visting should net rise, either on the arrival or departure of other ladies. For bar steel, iron and carriage goods go to Jacobi's Hardware Depot.
